Activity #2 Making a Food Web Background: One organism consumes another for energy and raw materials.

. A food chain or web shows the sequence in which energy passes from one organism to another as it moves through the community. Materials: A copy of the woodland community, lab notebook, and a writing utensil Procedure: 1. Create a data sheet in your lab notebook. 2. In pairs, closely observe the illustration showing a portion of the woodland community. List all the organisms you see. 3. Add to your list all other organisms that might be present in this community, but are not shown. 4. Determine which organisms are producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, etc. 5. Based on your determinations, create a food web using ALL the organisms in your list. You may want to start by making smaller food chains, and then connect them to make a web. 6. Write up your activity. Include your and your partners name, a title, your food web, and a conclusion based on your observations of your food web and including the following questions: a. How are food chains similar to food webs, yet different? b. Why can a food web be more helpful than a description of the same information written in a paragraph?
