1 FOREWORD
The purpose of this note is to evaluate the maximum peak short-circuit fault level, the maximum
symmetrical short-circuit fault level and the minimum symmetrical short-circuit fault level
involved at the bus bar of the new LV switchboards MS1 and MS2 as well as the existing LV
switchboards MS3, MS4 and EMS for the Seaway Polaris Upgrade Of Electrical Generation
Project.

3 SIMPLIFYING ASSUMPTIONS
The following assumptions have been taken into account to carry out the calculations:
a) Calculations are done within the first half-cycle of the fault condition.
b) All the asynchronous motors have been supposed equivalent to one large (as per IEC 61363-1
definition) motor directly connected to the bus bar of the main switchboard MS1, MS4 and
EMS.
c) The impedance of all bus bars is negligible.
d) The maximum peak short-circuit fault level, the maximum symmetrical short-circuit fault level
and the minimum symmetrical short-circuit fault level involved at the bus bar of the new LV
switchboard MS2 is equal to the one of MS1.
e) The maximum peak short-circuit at EMS is calculated when EMS is fed by MS1, considering
the Generators on MS1 have a higher rating than the one connected at MS4 and the interlock
between CB40 and CB20 at EMS (see APPENDIX A – General Single Line Diagram).
f) Only the minimum symmetrical short-circuit fault level involved at the bus bar of the new LV
switchboards MS1/MS2 is calculated. It is considered that the network configuration upgrade
has not impact on the existing LV switchboard MS3, MS4 and EMS regarding this case study
(G1, G2 and G3 having a higher power rating than the existing generators).

5 NETWORK MODELLING
Frequency : 60 Hz
Voltage : 460 Vac
Phases : 3 ph.
Grounding System : IT
As per BV document “Rules for the Classification of Steel Ships - PART C Machinery, Electricity,
Automation and Fire Protection Chapters 2 – ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS” at section 3, the
maximum number of generators are to be evaluated without taking into consideration short-term
parallel operation (e.g. for load transfer).
The 3 new generators G1, G2 and G3 being operated in a 2 of 3 mode, only G1 and G2 are taken
into consideration in the calculation.
