UNIVERSITI PERTAHANAN MALAYSIA KEM SUNGAI BESI LAB 3 CENTRIFUGAL PUMP CHARACTERISTICS

Objectives
1) To obtain the characteristics of a single pump 2) To obtain the characteristics of 2 similar pumps operating in parallel

Apparatus
A two-stage of centrifugal pump apparatus, stopwatch, pressure gage and volume flow rate measurement apparatus.

Background
Pumps are devices designed to convert mechanical energy to hydraulic energy. There are many kind of pumps use in the various technological fields. The main classes of pumps are centrifugal, rotary and reciprocating pumps. However, in the field of hydraulics, when deal with water, the most common pumps are centrifugal. A centrifugal pump consists of essentially of a impeller that carries a number of backward curved vanes and rotates in casing. The rotary motion of the impeller creates a centrifugal force that enables to push the fluid discharge from the pump and at the same time creates vacuum at eye to suck fluid into the pump. The process eventually converted the mechanical energy into pressure energy. The total head generated by a pump is called the manometric head.

Expected Results
Compute and plot; 1. Characteristic graphs for pump 1, pump 2 and pump 1 and 2 in parallel. Combined all data taken at all power positions. Plot graph H vs Q for pump 1 and 2 in parallel which obtain through experiment. On the same graph, plot graph H vs Q for pump 1 and 2 in parallel but the values calculated from experimental data given by each pump. Again, combined all data taken at all positions.

2.

Discussion
Discuss about your result and graphs Do you get the characteristic graphs similar to the standard graphs? If not, explain why. Do you get the experimental and the theoretical data for the graph H vs Q for pump 1 and 2 running in parallel coincide? If not, explain why.

Conclusion
Conclude your result and finding
