Title:

Hand Segmentation with fingertip detection

Description:

In this project the group will be able to implement hand segmentation and fingertip
detection using image processing techniques learned in this course and some other
techniques essential in the implementation of the project. The group will use Matlab
software in the implementation of the said project. Several researches in Human-
Computer Interaction (HCI) involve computer vision, which uses real-time and image
processing in the implementation of their work. The goal of HCI is to create a more
realistic interaction between computers and human, which would not require any input
device such as mouse, keyboard, etc. Most HCI researches uses cameras, which will
acquire the input for the processing. Our project is one of the commonly used techniques
in the implementation of the HCI system. The specific techniques we will be using are
background subtraction for the hand segmentation and feature extraction for the fingertip
detection.

Problems to be solved:

The problems that we will be solving are the hand segmentation and fingertip detection.
Fingertip detection is quite challenging since every user have different hand and fingertip
characteristic and the system must be able to detect both regarding its characteristics.
Noise must also be considered in the design. If the noise is too much, due to low quality
cameras,

Source of signals:

In this project we will be using static images as input and not real-time since we lack
devices in implementing it in real-time and we believe that the concept and
implementation of the two is similar.
