TECHNICAL INFORMATION Alignment and Installation In Horizontal Pumps

PACO horizontal pumps are machined, assembled and tested to rigorous standards as set up by various organizations such as ANSI, Nema and the Hydraulic Institute. As part of our S. O. P., all such pumps are factory aligned to such an extent that final field alignment capabilities are assured. However, in certain cases, improper field installation may create conditions which cause baseplate distortion, "soft foot" and pipe strain. These situations, in turn, may render a pump non-alignable and may result in vibration and premature failure. The following procedures, if followed, will generally yield acceptable results. A full discussion can be found in the Hydraulic Institute's Standards. Assure foundation is sized and flat. Use anchor bolts and a pipe sleeve. Place the pump / drives and baseplate assembly on the foundation. Disconnect the coupling halves. Do not reconnect until all alignment operations are complete.

Support the baseplate on metal blocks or shims and not directly on the floor (allow 3/4' - 11/2" between the baseplate and the foundation for grouting). Adjust the metal supports until the baseplate is level. Check the suction and discharge connections for horizontal and vertical, using a level. Check angular and parallel alignment. Repeat as necessary. Tighten foundation bolts evenly, but not too firmly. Recheck alignment. Grout. Leave shims in place. Do not fully tighten foundation bolts until group has set (approximately 48 hours). Align couplings. Pipe the unit. Pipe from the pump, taking care to properly support all piping. Check alignment and realign as necessary.

Note: Some manufacturers use larger holes in their baseplate to allow for improper installation. This is not in accordance with Nema nor other recommendations. Use of such methods may allow alignment, but well may create other equipment life shortening conditions.
