Comprehension

Read the following passage and then answer the question below: We sometimes forget that fire is still a great danger in modern planes. When a modern airliner takes off, it is carrying huge amounts of petrol. If an engine catches fire, it must be brought under control very quickly. If it is not, and it spreads to one of the tanks, the plane becomes a kind of bomb. On the ground, all airports have a twenty- four hour fire service. In the air, airline crews are given a great deal of training in dealing with fire. One of the most important parts of this training is dealing with the passengers . If the plane lands while it is still on fire, the passengers must be got out of the plane quickly and safely. This is not an easy thing to do in a modern airliner. It may have as many as 300 passengers, and only a few doors. And in getting out of the plane, the passengers can break legs, arms, or even their own necks. This must be avoided. Recently, a Boeing 707 left London with 128 passengers. A minute After taking-off a fire broke out in one of engines. It could not be controlled and the pilot decided to turn back. Firemen in special fireengines rushed to the end of the runway to meet the plane. It was coming in very fast. It landed, and within seconds the firemen were fighting the fire. At the same time, special emergency doors and windows were thrown open. The crew worked calmly and quickly. In less than two minutes, all the passengers and crew were out. Nobody was hurt. Meanwhile, the firemen had brought the fire under control. Such things rarely happen, but when they do the airport and the airliner crew are ready to deal with it. A- From a, b, c and choose the right answer: 1-The main idea of the second paragraph is . a-how to deal with explosions. b-how to deal with fire on the ground. c- how to deal with fire on board. d-how to deal with fire on the ground or on board. 2- The word " it " in line ( 14 ) refers to.. a. the fire . b. the plane . c. the pilot's door. d. the engine. 3-The word " crew " in line ( 20 ) means.. a. passengers b. engines c. staff members d. emergency doors

III-Summary-Making Read the following passage then answer the questions below: Most people think that rubbish is something to throw away. Scientists have found cheap ways to make use of it. As the price of oil goes up, some companies can get gas, electricity, or steam out of the rubbish. In Rome, people burn it into animal food. In Paris, they burn it to heat houses and generate electricity. The days of the rubbish dump are gone, said a city engineer in Rome at an international conference, There is a lot of stuff that can be used in rubbish. In New York City, rubbish is sent to a factory where the metal is taken out with a huge magnet, the plastic and paper are taken out with fans and water, and the orange peel and other organic material are used for animal food and fertilizers. The rubbish which cant be recycled is burnt and the heat gives power to the steam turbines that run factories. So, no rubbish is left. Recycling rubbish, then, has become a good friend to the environment.
