Language, Image, Sound, Behavior
JaptTnw ualuyMedia Theory describes the ways in which our means of
communication determine what and who we are, how we
behave, what we do and do not think about, how our feel-
ings develop and are limited, and who we can and cannot
reach. It offers an explanation for practically everything we
think, de and experience in our world. This explosive body of
thought has been developed over the past fifty years by var-
ious authors around the world, but no synthesis of their
ideas has existed until now. Understanding Media Theory pro-
vides such a synthesis. Arjen Mulder does not summarize the
work of previous authors, but makes media theory under-
Standable by discussing all its important concepts, ap-
proaches and areas of interest through concrete examples
and experiences. The book therefore remains clear and acces=
sible, even when it addresses complex subjects such as the
history of language use, artistic methods, and the uncon-
scious ways in which we allow ourselves to be influenced by
the media of the information society.
Sometimes humorous, often fascinating, and always highly
informative, Understanding Media Theory is a book meant not
only for students and artists but for anyone interested in the
times we live in.
Arjen Mulder is an Amsterdam-based media theorist who has taught at
various art schools in the Netherlands and Belgium. He has published
four collections of essays in the Dutch language and cowrate Book for
the Electronic Arts (2000) with Maaike Post.
