AERO3240 Orbital Mechanics ASSIGNMENT 3 Due: 17 November 2011 1.

Radar observations have provided the following successive position vectors of an object orbiting the earth: 1955.2948 T r1 = FG 4646.0121 km, 5227.4178 107.8848 T r2 = FG 3469.9455 km, 6531.6767 2316.9737 T r3 = FG 1373.0632 km. 7168.8558 (a) Determine the position vector at perigee rp in ECI coordinates. (b) Determine the velocity vector at perigee vp in ECI coordinates. (c) Determine the time since perigee passage t2 t0 for r2 . 2. Verify the velocity vector at perigee obtained in 1(b), by solving Lamberts problem given rp obtained in 1(a), r2 and the time of ight t2 t0 obtained in 1(c). 3. Two spacecraft are in the same geocentric elliptical orbit with semi-major axis a = 10, 000 km and eccentricity e = 0.2, as shown in Figure 1. At the current time, they have true anomalies 1 = 45o and 1 = 90o, respectively. Determine the v spacecraft 1 must apply at periapsis if it is to catch spacecraft 2 with a single tangential maneuver. Note: You will need the earths gravitational constant = 3.986 1014 m3 /s2 .
