LESSON PLAN

Lesson Title: Persuasive Techniques in Advertising Part II Lesson Overview: Students will view 6 advertisements and determine the type of advertising strategies are being used. Class/Content Area: Business Grade Level: 9-12 Length: 1 day (1 hr., 20 min. class) Lesson Objectives: Given worksheet, students will analyze 6 advertisements and determine what persuasive ad techniques are being used with 90% accuracy.

Materials/Resources: Analyzing Ads handout, Web resources for Finding Example Advertisements Listing, Commercial Assessment Rubric handout. A whole bunch of print media available (newspapers, journals, magazines, posters, etc.), 4 radios. Computer & Internet. Checking for Understanding: Applying, evaluating, Guided Practice: Worksheet, question and answer, class discussion, Models/Examples n/a

Ask students what are the 3 types of persuasive advertising? Show a commercial, and ask students what type of advertising it is. Show a print ad, and ask what type of ad is it.

Instructional Strategy: (Cooperative Learning)


I.
Explain to students they are going to analyze 6 advertisements: 2 print, 2 internet and 1 tv commercial and 1 radio and they are going determine what persuasive technique is being used. II. Pass out Handout (Analyzing Ads). A. Explain Instructions B. Students may pair up C. Tell students they may use the commercials from the Commercial Dig Homework III. Go over example of print media Determine if Ethos, Logos, Pathos or Other is being used. IV. Explain computer and internet is available to view internet ads Pass out Web resources for Finding Example Advertisements Listing V. Explain radios are at four corners of room VI. Tell class next class they will present at least one ad and justify what type of persuasive technique is being used. VII. Pass out Handout (Commercial Assessment) Explain this will be used to rate their presentation.

Closing Activity
Summarize with discussion what ads were easier to decide the technique. Ask, what challenges did they encounter with finding advertisements.
