How To Configure Static IP Addresses In Ubuntu 10.

This quick tutorial will show you how to setup permanent static IP addresses in Ubuntu Maverick or Lucid. If you prefer static IP address setup instead of DHCP, then this tutorial should help you setup a static IP address in Ubuntu.

Getting started:

To get started, go to System > Preferences > Network Connections.

Then select Auth eth0 and click Edit.

Next, select IPv4 Settings tab, and choose Manual for Method. Click Add to add your IP address information. Also enter your DNS servers addresses in the field shown. When finish click Apply to save.

Setup Static IP from the Interfaces file:

To do the same above from the interfaces file, go to Applications > Accessories > Terminal.

Then copy and paste the line below and press Enter to disable/uninstall Network Manager.
sudo apt-get purge network-manager network-manager-gnome

After that, press Alt-F2 on your keyboard, then type the command below:
gksu gedit /etc/network/interfaces

Then make the change to resemble the one in the highlighted box. Replace the IP addresses with your own and save the file.

Next, configure your DNS servers. Press Alt-F2 on your keyboard and enter the command below:
gksu gedit /etc/resolv.conf

Then make the change to resemble the one in the highlighted box. Replace the addresses with your own and save.

Restart your computer and youre done.
