Multiphase Fluid structure interaction on bends and T-joint

Back ground In many flow lines not a single fluid but 2 or more fluid are transported. In such a flow line with more than one phase large liquid structures, called slugs, can occur. When a slug encounters a Tee-joint or a bend it has to change direction. This change of direction results in a large force on the structure. In the design phase of a pipe line it is important to know these forces. Assignment In this project we will use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Methods (FEM) to model the multi-phase flow inside the pipeline and to calculate the forces on the structure. With these forces you will calculate the stresses and displacements of the structure. The CFD analysis can be done by either using with Fluent/Ansys or in OpenFOAM. Make a model of a the Tee-joint in a CFD package and FEM Perform simulations of two phase fluid flow Calculate stresses and displacements in the FEM model. Compare with analytical model and data from measurements done at TNO

Optional: You can also calculate the problems simultaneously so that the displacement of the structure has an influence on the flow.
