LEEP COLPOSCOPY

REASON FOR VISIT:

• Cervical cancer
• Vaginal cancer
• polyps (benign growths)
• genital warts
• diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure

RISK ASSESSMENT

• Menstruation
• Acute pelvic inflammatory disease
• Acute inflammation of the cervix
• Allergies to medication
• Allergies to anesthesia
• Bleeding disorders

PREPARATION OF THE PATIENT:

• Pap smear
• Colposcopy
• Blood tests
• Pregnancy tests
• Biopsy
• Douching was stopped 24 hrs before procedure
• Tampons were avoided for 24 hrs before procedure
• Intercourse was avoided for 24 hrs before procedure
• Vaginal medication was stopped 24 hrs before procedure
• Blood thinning medications were stopped
• Patient bladder was emptied prior to the procedure.

ANESTHESIA:

Local aesthesia
Cervical block

POSITION OF THE PATIENT:

Dorsal lithotomy position

THE PROCEDURE

• With patient positioned in dorsal lithotomy position speculum was


inserted into vagina
• The Colposcopy was placed at the opening of the vagina
• Cervix was cleansed and soaked with acetic acid solution.
• An iodine solution was used to coat the cervix.
• Tenaculum was applied to hold the cervix steady for the procedure.
• The LEEP wire was inserted through the speculum and passed
through the abnormal tissues.
• Tissue was removed by using the loop wire
• The electrical current was act as a cautery to seal the blood vessels

FINDINGS:

• Cervical cancer
• Vaginal cancer
• Polyps (benign growths)
• Genital warts
• Diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure

AFTER PROCEDURE:

The tissue sent to a lab for further examination.

POSTOPERATIVE CARE

• Stop douching for 4 weeks


• Stop using tampon for 4 weeks
• Stop intercourse for four weeks
• Don’t do heavy lifting and heavy exercise
• Take pain medication as prescribed
• Take antibiotics as prescribed

COMPLICATIONS

• Infection
• Bleeding
• Changes or scarring in the cervix from removal of tissue
