A Brief History Of The Legend . Mr. R.K.Swamy


Mr R K Swamy was a one of a kind in the advertising business in India. His record could well stand unbroken forever. For he was the architect of not one, but two, leading advertising agencies in his remarkable career that spanned 63 years. He started his career in J. Walter Thompson, in pre-independence India, in 1940, in Bombay, in the Indian Languages department. His talent and hard work could not be ignored. He was sent to Calcutta for several years, then brought back to Bombay. In 1955, he moved to Madras where he started not just the new office of J. Walter Thompson, but indeed the entire advertising industry in the South of India. He quit this organization after 33 eventful years, when he was its senior most director, and when this company was established as the leader in the business. He started his second innings, at the age of 50.

Doors of R K SWAMY Advertising Associates Private Ltd. opened for business on April 3, 1973. It was a full service Agency from day one, and it even included a Research Department. Within seven years, this company had spread its wings across the top five cities of India. They pioneered the concept of Total Communication System (a forerunner to the Integrated Marketing Communications of today), and opened up the entire Public Sector as an advertising category. The company joining hands with the BBDO Worldwide Network in 1986, long before such tie-ups became the trend in the industry.
