Actions: Inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins (regulators of contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle tissue) that may serve as mediators of pain and fever, primarily in the CNS. May also increase pain treshold Therapeutic effects: Analgesia, antipyresis Onset/Peak/Duration: PO: Onset: 0.5-1hr Peak: 1-3hr Duration: 3-8hr

NmL Dose: PO adults 325-650 mg q 4-6 hrs. PO children: 10-15 mg/kg/dose q 4-6 hrs needed, but not more than 5doses/24 hr Safe Dose: Indications: mild pain, fever Reason Client is prescribed: Common Side Effects: GI: Hepatic failure (overdose) GU: renal failure (high dose) Derm: rash, urticaria Drug-Drug/Food Interactions or compatibility problems: Chronic high doses may increase the risk of bleeding with warfarin. Hepatoxicity is increased if taken with other hepatotoxic substances such as alcohol. Nursing Considerations: Assessment: assess patient for nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, and bowel sounds prior to and following administration. Lab considerations: may cause transient increase in serum bilirubin, AST, and ALT levels. Implementation: Direct IV: Administer undiluted (2mg/ml) immediately before induction of anesthesia or postoperatively if nausea and vomiting occur shortly after surgery.
