A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ONE FAMILY IN HAITI, 10 DAYS AFTER THE TRAGEDY. Before sunrise, Lisia Jilles, 45 sits singing while her large family sleep on blankets around her. There are 20 people, from her half-blind, octogenarian grandmother to a four-month-old baby. They have had four homes destroyed in the earthquake, and lost six relatives including Lisias husband, Rene, a carpenter. She hasnt slept. She was too afraid of the thieves, of rats and mice, of rain. I watch and pray all night, she says. When Lisias family wake up, day is no more attractive than night. Everywhere there are piles of rubbish. Pools of dirty water are full of mosquitoes. Eight portable lavatories give out a horrible smell. There is a small charge for using them. The family use buckets and save that money. A water hose from a nearby hotel provides the only running water. Lisa queues for 30 minutes to fill a plastic container so that her family can wash. They share toothbrushes and a bar of soap. Breakfast is three dried bread rolls. The women leave almost everything for their children. Ten days after the earthquake, no food, drinking water, tents or medical supplies have reached this camp. At midday, the camp comes alive. Barefooted kids play football with broken balls. Boys fly kites. Mothers play with babies. Some men bring wood from nearby ruins to build new shelters.
