Editorial
All Good Things Must Come To An End.
This is something that I never really wanted to have to write, but its been on the cards for a good while now and Ive come to realise I have to face facts. With this Issue the magazine goes into its tenth year in existence and Im afraid to say its going to be its tenth and last year, - it will be ending after ten full years with Issue 120. To put it bluntly, its too much of a struggle, it costs a certain amount of money to print, pack and post the issues each month which in turn means it has to generate another certain amount of money to pay for itself and to earn me a living ... and it just doesnt, not even close. It does pay for itself but it leaves me with very little left over, not even remotely enough to justify all the hours I spend on it. As with all weekly or monthly publications, they always require a high enough amount of readers to keep it going and unfortunately that is where the problem lies in this particular case, it boils down to the fact that there is just not enough people who are prepared to buy it and continue to buy it. The sad thing is that had around 90% of those who have subscribed over the years continued to subscribe year after year, then there would be no problem at all, - but the actual percentage of those who continually re-subscribe is nowhere near that. It means that each new reader who subscribes is not adding to the subscriber numbers as they are just replacing someone who hasnt renewed, - and you dont get any further forward. In fact in the past year or two the amount of new readers has not been enough to replace those who drop out, so the subscriber numbers are actually going backwards when they were nowhere near high enough to start with. Im not having a go at anyone, who am I to dictate where people spend their money, and certainly not in this day and age when a small dog magazine is pretty low on the list of must haves. Theres far more important things that people need to spend their hard earned on, I know that better than anyone. Indeed I feel the onus has always been on me to produce something that would be good enough to get a sufcient amount of people to continually buy it. Ive always felt that if I kept adding to the magazine, improving it and making it bigger and better then sooner or later I would end up with something that would eventually be seen by the Bull Terrier fraternity as something they would happily pay for year on year. However, it has come to the stage where Ive realised I cant push it any further forwards. I cant add any more pages because the additional printing costs will eat up even more prots and even worse the postage costs will almost double, - theres just no room for manoeuvre anymore? So with that in mind the magazine as it stands at present is about as good as I can possibly get it, and the subscription rates are as low as I can possibly get away with. If people arent prepared to pay for it now then they are never going to, I can no longer improve anything in their favour either the product or the price... The funny thing is, and Ive said this to a few people over the years, the percentage of people who renewed their subscriptions way back in the rst few years (when it was only 8-12 pages) was higher than it is now, and so was the amount of new subscribers year on year. Bizarre as it sounds, it seems that the more Ive tried to improve and expand it, the more people are turning away from it for some reason?? Maybe the novelty has worn off, maybe the instant information and interaction of the forums is lessening the appeal of the magazine, - I dont know. Ive tried to include things that I thought were useful, helpful and interesting to the breeds followers, - and I personally think the end result with the help of all the contributors is pretty damn good. Of course I would say that, but I know many feel the same way, those people who do plough their money into it continually. But that particular group of people is just far too small in numbers to sustain it and the majority still dont appear to be interested at all, certainly not enough to subscribe. Ultimately I havent managed to produce something that enough people see as worthy of spending their money on continually, and in all honesty I just cant think of anything else I can do that would make any difference? Id imagine some may be thinking that I should simply ditch the printed magazine only and just leave the digital one, thus eliminating all the production and postage costs. In theory not a bad idea, but the digital subscription price is already reected by the fact theres no printing and postage involved its a lot lower and if anything the renewal numbers are even worse for subscribers of the Digital version. It really wouldnt make any difference at all, Id still be doing the same work, Id still be making roughly the same amount of money, and Id still need a lot more people to continually subscribe to earn a living from it. The top and bottom is the subscriber numbers, it doesnt matter what format the magazine is in or how much I charge for it, it just requires enough paying subscribers year after year to generate enough money to support both it and me, and its pretty clear that the subscriber numbers are never going to be anywhere near high enough, - I know Im simply wasting my time and effort in continuing. Dont get me wrong, I love doing the magazine and I dearly wish it would make me a half decent living but Im a realist, its not going to happen as things stand. So I think its best to bow out and save my sanity, and on exactly ten years is quite appropriate, the March Issue of 2012 will be the last one. Its a shame, but things dont always go your way in life and unfortunately this is one of them. However ... its not quite the absolute end. Im not going to waste all of the hard work Ive put into building the magazine and the brand name up, and once the magazine has come to an end I plan to set up some kind of new website for the breeds followers, - think of some kind of cross between a stripped down version of the magazine and a Bull Terrier blog. Its just ideas oating around my mind at the moment but thats what Im looking at so a lot of the information or features that currently appear in the magazine may still be available, only in a different format. It will be a free site, no memberships or anything and hopefully Ill nd a way of opening it up for others to contribute news, views and information. Cant really say any more at this stage because I dont know myself, but the future incarnation of Bull Terrier Monthly will bear little resemblance to the current one thats for sure, - but Ill come up with something and then see how it goes from there. Maybe it will be the best move Ive ever made or maybe it will be a disaster only one way to nd out? Lastly, as far as current subscriptions and renewals for the remainder of the magazine go, there are far too many variables for me to explain here (Cheque, Standing Order, Paypal, renewal rate, cancelling, refunds etc, etc). But please dont worry, I will deal with each and every readers subscription individually as and when they occur keep in mind Im just one person who deals with hundreds of subscriptions so please dont panic and bombard me with queries, again I can assure you when its your turn Ill inform you everything you need to know that relates to yours. everyone, so I think from my point of view its fair to say the year has started with a bang, two Champions made up at Manchester, a new kid on the block going Best in Show from Puppy at the BTC Open Show Trophy Weekend and a great result for a worthy Champion shown sparingly to qualify for the trophies, taking the Dog Jug and the ultimate prize the Regent Trophy, yes a good start for those concerned for the coming season. However one must not forget the competition at these events, in fact all the competitors in these shows and all the forthcoming shows throughout the season, Club, Limit, Open or Club Championship and General Championship, I give you my respect, I know only too well the hardships of our hobby nowadays. Crufts was the next big event on the scene followed by SECBT Open and the Scottish Club Open Shows, they in turn were followed hot on their heels by the Bull Terrier Club of Wales Championship Show, it was Maza Bishops rst Championship Show engagement, the usual party/ gathering was planned after judging had nished, let me just say Maza and her old man Kelvin are and have always been very courteous hosts, you know folks its good to have a bit of a good social scene in the dog game, I feel its now one of the reasons so many folk enjoy the Trophy Weekend, its the crack that goes with it, Im not saying one should live in your mates pocket, but its supposed to be an hobby and you know its ok to have some fun and enjoy it. By all means take it serious in the ring but not to the point of bitterness if you dont get what you think you should. Crufts dog show turned out to be the Blazinbullys show with both dog and bitch CCs going to that kennel, Ch. Chamos Whispered Secret at Blazinbullys winning the dog ticket with the home bred Ch. Blazinbullys Miss Sinister taking Bitch CC and Best of Breed, she in turn made the cut in the Group, however she thought it was time to celebrate when it was her turn to move and unfortunately didnt settle to the job in hand, nonetheless a great effort for the breed from this up and coming kennel. I attended YBTC Open Show, I had a good day out with my mate, a little controversy again which I missed most of for whatever reason. Apparently somebody was handling a dog and was wrecked, you know worse the wear for beer, dime bar, also some comments were made about a bitch with a growth to her underjaw, yeah I saw her, yeah perhaps a trip to the vet is in order - however if you dont ask you wont know if that trip has already been made. Judges CVs, yes its that time of year when folk are receiving replies from Clubs letting them know what list they have made, now lets be clear what Im going to say here, I have no problem with how any Club collates their judges lists or how they implement them. I myself are in receipt of most clubs criteria and most have a little clause at the end saying (to have the Clubs support) this comment is in line with KC guidelines and legitimate and all Clubs that use or endorse that clause are well within their rights to do so, which I unreservedly support. The point is if youre talking about A list judges, most will get on to some Club list somewhere or other and their career carries on regardless, however if youre talking about B list judges moving up to A3, well thats another question. Its not logical to request CVs print and make available Club criteria for inclusion and advancement through that criteria and then when someone meets that criteria turn them down by saying you didnt get the support of the committee vote to move forward. It beggars the question why didnt you get the support if you meet the criteria? Clubs are not required to give reasons for their decision, a decision which could be for any reason based on any criteria, in other words read the small print. A bit of news some folk may be interested in knowing. I phoned the Royal Court Hotel up to see if I could book my room for next years Trophy Show, I was pleasantly surprised to nd that the BTC had negotiated a better deal on rooms for members and the general fancy alike, thats great news and will certainly add to the weekend, a good job done in the negotiations well done to the committee. I was also led to believe a long stay at the Royal Court has also been negotiated; this is great news for the fancy making it possible to now plan in advance, well done to all concerned. I must say at this point that some folk may say, hey Keith, youve changed your point of view on the BTC and its management, and the way they handle their affairs, and yes they would be right, the thing is Ive grown up a little from my early days when I was an angry young buck, yes I had the right to be angry on certain issues, on others Ive shall we say got older and wiser, listened to the opposite point of view, debated, but more importantly asked questions and looked for the middle ground. I have to say Ive never been a committee animal, however resent positive experience has learnt me, that to run or manage any Club, never mind one with the prole of the BTC is not an easy task, lets just say Im more understanding of the issues involved nowadays. OK enough is enough, Im not going to beat myself up any more, however people should remember if an issue needs addressing, Ill not be wary of addressing it, Ill just be tactful and fair in the way I do it. Still with a link to the Bull Terrier Club, the UK team has now been released for the forthcoming International event held in the Netherlands mid November, the team is as follows. Im sure all out there will wish the team success, and good wishes in their quest to bring the Trophy home for the third year on the trot. News from the SECBTC, Ragnarok Daralis with Polanca going BIS under judge Tony Williams, at the moment I dont seem to be getting much feedback from the fancy about how the show went, so if you can help let me know. The same weekend Alison Stewarts Ounsdale Mighty Medusa in only her third Show at the tender age of 11 months went Best of Breed and Best Puppy at the Potteries Canine Society Open Show, breed judge was Scott Leesley, - she then went on to a very creditable Group 2, also Best Terrier Puppy, to top the day off for her owner handler she then nished the day by going Best Puppy in Show, congratulations Alison. April is a busy month for the Club Show scene with three Clubs putting Limit and Open Shows on. Northern Provincial BTC, West of England BTC Open Shows, and Notts & Derby District BTC Limit. They are of course preceded by National Terrier where Ger Cox is ofciating, Ger has pulled and entry of 56 up about ten on last years entry so thats a move in the right direction. Ive just received my schedule and accounts for the Coloured Bull Terrier Club, its good to see the Club has again made a prot on the year, not an easy task nowadays, one little observation to make about the closing date for this show, on the front of the schedule closing date is printed as Friday the 20th of April, when in fact the 20th of April is on a Wednesday. Its just an idea to conrm the closing date or post early to avoid any error. Judge for the forthcoming Coloured Club show is Sarah Foster, there are Mini classes scheduled for this show and the nominated judge is Mr Peter Ensell, get yourselves up there as a day watching all those coloured bullies is not a day to miss. he Bull Terrier Club Trophy Show is not the only Bull Terrier event to take place during February, we also see the start of the regional Club Shows for the new season...
The rst of which was the East Anglian Bull Terrier Club Open Show, and its there that we nd Dawn Godsall carrying out her judging duties. Dawn found her outright Best In Show in her Best Dog winner, Kettlebroughs young brindle boy, Bullysoul To Hard To Handle (Ch. Emred Huntsman x Bullysoul Sunshine Girl). Picking up both Best Opposite Sex and Reserve Best In Show, was Martin and Hursts brindle bitch, Yungwood Sweet Enchantment At Santini (Ounsdale Buffalo Soldier x Yungwood Sweet Celebration). Best Puppy on the day went to another of the coloured ranks, Rossers red dog, King Arthur The Legend (Cwmdulais Hall Of Fame x Bullambi Mischief Maker of Bullorrties).
Reserve Best Dog and Bitch went to Moodys white boy, Kersharela Thundercloud At Odyom (Merlindan Sentinal x Merlindan Vanity Fair), - and to Bunces black brindle girl, Bilboen Shooting Star (Odakotas Black Hawk x Bilboen Received From Heaven). Following on the next day all the way up the East coast, was the North East Bull Terrier Club Limit Show. Two judges were on hand, Octavian Galla for the dogs and Alison Roberts for bitches. Between them they couldnt decide on their Best In Show, so Referee Steve Wheatley was called in and handed the spoils to the Best Bitch, Blairs black brindle girl, Ishaba Ebony And Ivory at Megaville (Megaville Sardonicus x Ishaba Serenity). Just edged out into the Reserve Best In Show spot was the Best Dog, Pilkingtons white boy, Javarke Jack Frost (Ch. Emred Huntsman x Ch. Terjos Jolee at Javarke).
From the same kennel we nd our Best Puppy winner, Pilkingtons black brindle male youngster, Javarke Pitch Black (Ch. Emred Huntsman x Wanna Be Posh at Javarke). On to the remaining Club show of the month, the traditional curtain raiser to the main event, - the Bull Terrier Club Open Show. Judging the show this time around was Eddie Ball. A great start for a dog making his rst appearance in the show rings, as Goodwins young tri-colour boy Busells Black Magic At Ounsdale is found Best Puppy, Best Dog and Best In Show. Best Opposite Sex and Reserve Best In Show went to another currently in great form, Blairs Ishaba Ebony And Ivory at Megaville (Megaville Sardonicus x Ishaba Serenity), adding to the success at her previous outing.

I would like to thank all the committee for their warm welcome and hospitality, and to all the exhibitors, I had a wonderful day, it was my pleasure and honour to have judged this show. BIS: Ragnarok Balder At Polanca RES BIS and BOS: Bilboen Star At Night BEST PUPPY: Barking At The Moon Special Beginners Dog (3 Entries, 1 Absent) 1. Ragnarok Heimdllr. White dog, good head, good spring of rib, plenty of bone and substance, moved well. 2. Samsenna Renegade. White dog good strong head, did not use his ears, nice reach of neck, feet were a little untidy. Moved well in front. Puppy Dog (3 Entries, 0 Absent) 1. Barking At The Moon. Best Puppy White dog with black ears, nice sweep to the head, has a wicked eye, lovely reach of neck, good feet, good angulation, he needs a little time to mature, but he stands and shows himself off to his best. He enjoyed his day, lovely movement. 2. Bullbrand The Uprising. Red dog he was very unsettled, nice head, broad chest and spring of rib, good bone and tail set. 3. Chardaice Smooth Criminal At Etalimi. Junior Dog (4 Entries, 3 Absent) 1. Ragnarok Gunigir At Kollen. White dog with left brindle patch, lovely strong head, ears well placed, good reach of neck, well made dog, with good bend off stie, moved with power, lovely tight feet (Best Mover). Novice Dog (2 Entries, 1 Absent) 1. Chardiace Born Legacy With Bullbrand. Brindle and white, strong head, needs a little more ll under the eyes. Good square front, well placed shoulders, he was a little exited, but then settled down. Post Graduate Dog (4 Entries, 0 Absent) 1. Kescostaff Diamond Geezer. Black and white dog. Nice prole, needs a little under the eyes, good topline, has lovely tight feet, he has good hind angulation, moved well

Samsenna Shes The One. Tri-colour bitch. Well balanced, nice clean lines, nice prole, tail set lets her down. 3. Bediveres Frozen Ice. Limit Bitch (3 Entries, 0 Absent) 1. Bilboen Star At Night. Best Opposite Sex & Reserve Best In Show. Blk/brindle and white classical bitch, head well lled with sweeping prole, ears well placed, straight front, good quarters, tight feet, very good tail set, moved well both ways, she showed herself off, I hope she will be a STAR. 2. Bediveres Frozen Ice. 3. Louka Lady Luck ShCM. Open Bitch (5 Entries, 1 Absent) 1. Samsenna Monarchs Mischief. White bitch with black ear, well lled head, good strong square front, lovely tight feet, she moved well both ways. 2. Ragnarok Fricka Over Bilboen. Brindle and white, good powerful head lled and turned, she is a lovely compacted bitch, very well balanced. Good angulation and moved well. 3. Caliber Silver Playted.

It was my pleasure to award him BEST DOG and BIS. 2. Chardaice Love Me Tender. White, compact dog, good power and substance, head has a nice turn, nice short back, well laid shoulders, it was hard to assess his movement as he was a little too excited. 3. This was the Societys third kind invitation extended to me to judge their prestigious show and it gave me great pleasure to be able to accept on this occasion. The large ring enabled movement and construction on the move to be tested. The classes and the challenges for both sexes were extremely strong. Grifths Hentarw Welsh Warrior From Penpych. B/B dog head is well lled with power, mouth incorrect, good front and bone throughout, short back, good bend of stie, moved OK. 2. Potburys Red Warrior. R/W dog, head has power but lacks prole, front needs to tighten, good depth chest, short back and a well angled rear, moved OK. Puppy Dog (2 Entries) 1. Tamila & Wyatts Chardaice Smooth Criminal at Etalimai. B/Brindle dog, well lled head with depth and prole. Good ear set giving a good expression. Mouth

Good eye and expression, good ear set completing the picture. Good mouth, powerful neck leading in to a good front, nice feet, the shortest of backs, well angled rear, moved a little loose on the front rear OK, needs to body up but a dog of great virtues. 2. OConnells Ragnarok Gungnir At Koellen. Cobby white dog, well lled head with depth has a gentle prole and a good eye, ears well set. Mouth level. Good front and shoulders, good depth throughout, good bend of stie, moved OK.

His shoulders are a little steep, has a barrel chest with depth, good rear and moved OK, shows like a bomb at one with his handler, a lot to like about this dog. 2. Browns Meridianview Monkey Boy. B/W dog. Head has power and prole, good mouth. Front is straight but loose in shoulder. Good depth of chest, has a short back, could do with a little more angulation in the rear, moved accordingly. Strong neck leading into a good front and feet, shoulders are well laid, lovely depth through the chest and ribs well sprung, he has a short back, good tail set and is well angulated

B/White Dog whose head is well lled and has a good prole, has a good under jaw, good depth through the skull and good ear set, good front and feet, short backed. Maldens Shanson Black Shadow At Louka. 10 year old B/B Bitch in great condition, head is well lled and has a good shape. News From New Zealand

from down under its been a while since I have written anything and there has been quite a bit happening. Our March Open show of 2010 was an ambitious project for the North Island Bull Terrier Club committee. We held the Open show (easy) then a handling clinic, then a ribbon show, a Bully Olympics, a fancy dress, a colouring competition and a BBQ meal that night. Phew! But what a lot of fun had by all. We had hoped to get some of our pet people along to take part in the event and managed to get a lot of them out and socialising with the rest of us serious dog folk. Our venue was a holiday park which provided us with onsite accommodation which made life a lot easier. The club has a Facebook page if youd like to see some of the activities from the day. Who Is It?
Now this is a tricky one, not only is it from a very long time ago but you dont see the mystery dog as an adult, nor do you know which one in the litter it is ... and neither do I for that matter. The lady in the photograph was one of the most famous people in the breed and one of the dogs in this litter that she bred went on to become one of the most famous dogs, - so the task this time is to name them both, who is the lady and who is the dog in the litter? A small clue as far as the dog goes, he was said to be well ahead of his time better than anything that had gone before him. Not much to go on but its all youre getting! Answers will be revealed in a future issue.

It seems I threw people off the scent a little bit with the last mystery dog (Pictured right), and the funny thing is I didnt even mean to and didnt realise Id done it with what I wrote. By using the word Elite in the write-up of the mystery dog, one or two picked up on that and assumed the dog in question was Brobar Elite. Well Im not that clever to dream something like that up, so no Im afraid it wasnt Brobar Elite. If I remember rightly I used the words elite group, the reason being that she does indeed belong to an elite group of Bull Terriers those 23 Champions who were sired by Ch. Souperlative Jackadandy of Ormandy. Clearly we can narrow it down to one of the Bitch Champions, but which one? Well wonder no more, the name of the young lady in the photograph is a certain Ch. Stereotypical Behaviour In The Bull Terrier.

have had Bull Terriers since 1984 but it was 1989 when I took on the Bull Terrier Welfare for Scotland before I had my rst experience of the bizarre behaviour they could exhibit. Bull Terriers are a very saleable commodity so it is quite understandable to expect to have to sort out a few problem behaviours before they can be re-homed. However there are problems which are sort-able and then there are problems which are not. Chaka came in to the kennels and it was obvious from the word go that this dog had a real problem. He tail chased incessantly to the extent his quarters were cut and bruised from hitting off the walls but worse was to come. He ate his tail through to the bone and in desperation we had his tail amputated. However he then ate his front leg exposing the bones and at that point he was put to sleep. Tara was a lovely brindle and white bitch and very affectionate. She had come to us because she had bitten a child on the testicles but we were told this was out of character for her so we decided to give her a chance. Over a period of time she bit all of us, always aiming for the groin but in our ignorance we always made excuses for her. However I was on my own one Sunday when she ipped. Her behaviour was so aggressive that I could not get into her kennel nor could I get her out. Towards the evening she calmed down but I had already made arrangements with my vet when he came to collect his dogs that she was to be put down the following morning. It was a heartbreaking experience as by then she was back to her normal affectionate self. We had a similar experience with Appollo, a beautiful 10-month-old white dog that looked and behaved to good to be a welfare candidate. He also ipped and we were lucky he was in the exercise area on his own when he did as it could have been dangerous had anyone been near him at the time. He was also euthanized. We bought in Sam, a lovely red and white dog but at the age of ten months he actually had a recognisable falling down epileptic t. This is the only Bull Terrier I have seen with this type of t. However it was not until he was put on Phenobarbitone that we realised we had not seen the dog sit or lie down for months. Without the drug he paced incessantly. Cindy and Holly came in with y catching behaviour and both had neurological tests at Glasgow Vet School, nothing unusual was found and no diagnosis for the weird behaviour could be reached. Hollys behaviour progressed to head butting the ground while running in large
circles. She also appeared to be hearing things as well as seeing things that were not obvious to the onlookers and at this stage she could not be distracted. Holly was post-mortem at the vet school but again there were no answers. These are only a few of the dogs as there are really too many to name individually. Over the years we were getting in dogs that displayed bizarre behaviour and no amount of retraining was being truly successful. Then we had a slight breakthrough with a dog I had known since he was born. He was having head icks and the timing of the onset every day was telling me it had something to do with diet but this I could not rationalise as the dog was on the same diet as my own dogs and the owner actually bought the feed from us. Fresh tripe and biscuit meal. After a lot of searching questions it nally emerged that the dog was being given tinned food for a change. Taken off the tinned food, Danny Boys behaviour went back to normal and he only got head icks when he was put on the tinned food again to see if it was indeed the tinned food which caused the bizarre behaviour. It was! Out of curiosity more than anything else I decided to check the diet of all the Bull Terriers who had come to me at the owners request to investigate the abnormal behaviour. They all improved in the kennels although I was not doing a lot of retraining but they were being fed the same diet as my own dogs. At home all the dogs without exception were being fed tinned food or a complete diet at the onset of the bizarre behaviour. After approximately three to four days in the kennels the behaviour was becoming more normal and they would usually be sent home at the end of two weeks. Some reverted to the bizarre behaviour, some because they had put on weight and looked better on our bully diet, were kept on this diet and the behaviour remained normal. I was attending a Behaviour Seminar when I came across a book called The Dog Who Loved Too Much by a vet called Nick Dodman. Chapter 11 was devoted to Bull Terriers and in it he was describing all the weird behaviours I had been seeing over the years. He had done scientic research on this but his ndings were considered awed as he had sedated the Bull Terriers to perform the EEG tests and it was felt the sedation could have interfered with the dogs normal brain function. After contacting him he very kindly sent me the paper from the Journal Of The American Veterinary Association titled Behavioural Changes
Associated With Suspected Partial Seizures In Bull Terriers. Now I knew why I had not been successful with retraining alone. A lot of the times I had been dealing with a medical condition and did not know it. Using Professor Dodmans paper I now realise I have seen ve different behaviours exhibited by the Bull Terrier, the disturbing feature being that most of the time they are the normal affectionate bully we all know and love. I can only state the aberrant behaviour is stereotypical as to the best of my knowledge there has been no scientic study done on these behaviours in the Bull Terrier breed in Britain. I also believe that the dogs that are feed sensitive, where the wrong diet can bring about stereotypical behaviour, that this may be a sub-clinical condition. Feed reactions are not conned to the Bull Terrier breed but seem widespread in all breeds. In the kennel situation where we have all different breeds we have been able to do feed trials to nd a complete diet with no EEC Permitted additives, avourings or colourants and in this we included treats, rawhide chews, processed bones pigs ears etc, the common denominator is the label EEC permitted in the list of ingredients. Judging by the people who have contacted me from all over Britain for advice on aberrant Bull Terrier behaviour, the condition is wide spread and appears to be getting worse or it may be that since reading Professor Dodmans paper, I am more aware of the condition. STEREOTYPICAL BEHAVIOUR The following behaviours can be seen in Bull Terriers who are susceptible to the toxic effects of additives, avourings and colourants (E numbers) in food. Diet means anything edible the dog is given and includes dog biscuits, pigs ears and dental chews or any treats which have the words EEC permitted in the ingredients list. Rage Behaviour Most of the time you have a normal friendly Bull Terrier who has periods of aggressive behaviour. If you take note of the timing of the aggressive episodes you will usually nd these occur approximately twelve to fourteen hours after the dog has been fed with a meal that contains additives, avourings and colourants. Even a few biscuits that contain additives and colourants in an otherwise perfect diet can cause the problem. Fear Behaviour This must not be confused with the excited spin of a dog anticipating something good eg. A treat, a toy or a walk. These Bull Terriers are condent most of the time in their
home environment but have periods of abject terror when taken from their comfort zone or a stranger to them enters the comfort zone. The usual response is where they can drop to the oor and shake like a leaf. In such a situation the most likely response is nervous aggression if they feel trapped. Tail Chasing This is a well-known behaviour in the Bull Terrier but can be tolerated unless it is allowed to get to the stage where the dog cannot be distracted. The spinning gets so out of control that the dog actually injures itself bouncing off the surroundings or the dog bites the tail causing wounds but seems oblivious to the pain this must cause. This is the main aberrant behaviour but a range of odd behaviours can be seen e.g. Fly catching, shadow chasing, ank sucking etc. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder This is where the dog concentrates on the object of its obsession to the exclusion of all else even such things as eating and sleeping, getting very distressed if the object of the obsession is removed. Hyperactivity This is a restless dog who rarely settles down and wants to be on the go all the time. There is usually difculty in getting weight on them so they will be thinner than you would expect a bull terrier to be. Anything, which would cause excitement in the normal dog, will send the hyperactive dog into hysteria where it will be extremely difcult to control. Their bark is abnormally high pitched. Diet has to be considered in a dog that licks its front paws, has reddened conjunctiva of the eyes and whose bark is very high pitched. Additives, colourants and avourings (E numbers) fed to the susceptible dog for four days or more will trigger any one or more of the stereotypical behaviours. While the dog is under the inuence of the additives and preservative in the diet the aberrant behaviour becomes a learned behaviour which will continue after the diet has been corrected. The dog then needs retraining to get rid of the unwanted behaviours and it is a good idea to discuss this with a behaviourist who knows the normal Bull Terrier behaviour and can advise on remedial techniques to use. One or more of the behaviours can be evident in the dog at the same time, e.g. tail chasing and obsessive compulsive disorder. Terry Heath 2011.

ello sunshine! What glorious weather we are having, does make you feel better and the dogs are just lapping it up. Keeps them from being under my feet all the time, also allows me to type without Tias head being smack bang in the middle of the keyboard! Crufts has now been and gone and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. My daughter Melissa was able to come with me this year, so we made a weekend of it. We stayed in the Travelodge just 4 miles away from the NEC, so the journey was only 5 minutes Saturday morning and straight into the West Car Park without getting lost, that in itself was a miracle. It was so much easier than the dreaded up at 3.00am routine. Getting in with both Sally and Tia was a bit of a race; Tia did win because she can spring into the front of Sally! It wasnt as busy as I thought it would have been, usually weekend means rather big crowds. But Joe Public did manage to get in the way when I was trying to get to the ring. Really dont they have any idea of where they are going? Rocki ended up in a basket under a kiddies buggy, and Rocki being Rocki wasnt phased by this at all he had already spied a black dog heading in his direction, but I had already seen the oncoming attraction so a quick hoist into my arms and all was back to normal. Rocki did manage a mouthful of crisps as he departed the buggy. The look on the childs face was priceless, as if to say hey they are my crisps and I didnt want share them. I could hardly take them from the back of Rockis mouth and give them back now could I? The atmosphere was great and was super to catch up with friends from home and away. It does look like the number of overseas dogs competing at Crufts is going up every year now. I enjoy seeing the overseas dogs. I must say they are always so well behaved in the ring. It was also nice to see some good sized classes. The dogs always look so well on the green carpet! National Terrier numbers are out judge is Ger Cox from Southern Ireland, he is doing both Bull Terriers and Minis. This will be his rst CC appointment in Minis. Excellent entry for the Minis of 44, think thats the same as last year and the entry for Bull Terriers is 56, 13 up on last year. National Terrier show will have been in full swing whilst reading this. The MBTC AGM/Open Show also will have been and gone as well, unfortunately no numbers are out for the Show. It is a shame that the MBTC AGM/Open Show clashes with the

Lovely upstanding 10 months b/br/w, strong head shape, well lled and depth in underjaw, strong neck, no looseness with good front, substance to match size, nice topline. Just longer and bigger than his litter brother but beautifully handled and presented. Did not let handler down on the move. Close decision in the challenge. Junior Dog (3 Entries) 1. Dances Decadence Deliverance. Dog Reserve CC Handled himself well, eye-catching 10 months b/br/w, strength in head with depth, loved his prole, nice arch and length to neck, enough between legs and straight front, body well rounded, quarters to match size, did not disappoint on the move with topline remaining level. 2. Neames Badlesmere Bering Express. Pleasing head shape but not the strength of 1. Liked his eye and ear placement, good bite, straight front, well boned, liked his quarters which showed well on the move from rear action. 3. Preddys Badlesmere Boipelo. Post Graduate Dog (1 Entry) 1. Harrisons Jenkir Thor. Strong headed b/br/w, good shape and size to eye enhancing expression, strength in neck to match, strong legs well boned, liked his depth of brisket into strong quarters. Limit Dog (2 Entries) 1. Barretts Decadance Discovery Margins. Dog CC & Best Puppy Full of himself and proud of his sex, smart eye-catching youngster, lovely prole in his powerful head, well lled with strength and depth, lovely arch and length to neck into shoulders, width to front with bone to match, broad chest, strength in quarters, covering the ground with ease, loves the ring and showed to perfection to take CC but faulted on the move in the nal challenge, and BP. 2. Cartwrights Badlesmere Buzzin Boycie. Lovely glint in the eye of this nice bodied white, well lled head, liked his eye placement, sufcient neck, strong front, depth in brisket, well boned legs, good rib with substance to match, well muscled in quarters. Not settled on the move.

Nice head, well lled white, lovely eye, used his ears to advantage adding to expression, good brisket, well boned legs, just right on substance, well up in loin, strong rear quarters, lovely happy dog. Bitch Reserve CC Lovely feminine head without losing strength on this pretty 10 months white b/br, lovely prole, mouth holding, nice eye and ear placement adding to expression and used those ears well, good front, spring of rib and nicely tucked into loin, lovely proportions, liked her overall balance, good bone structure, strong hindquarters, kept her head up and didnt disappoint on the move to take RCC. 2. Richardsons Badlesmere Bookend at Quayardson. Has many qualities, 10 months baby, width and turn in head, straight front, liked her reach of neck and topline. Longer in back than 1. Prefer a little more bone and smaller eye but a pretty picture all round. Junior Bitch (0 Entries) Post Graduate Bitch (0 Entries) Limit Bitch (4 Entries) 1. Llewellyns Merkava Kleopatra by Bullypins. Liked this strong headed white as soon as she came in the ring, well lled under the eye, good prole, nice arch to neck, balance to body, strong bone throughout, substance to match shape, well considered in the challenge. Moved better than 2 but would have liked a bit more population from behind. 2. Richardsons Little White Lie at Quayardson. Nicely shaped young white, good shoulders, rm topline with neck to match, straight front. Not quite the strength and prole in head of 1 but very pretty. 3. Ensells Erenden Waltzing Matilda at Minimayhem. Open Bitch (4 Entries) 1. Presland & Vincents White Eyed And Legless in Kofyn. Bitch CC & Best Of Breed Well presented throughout, never letting her handler down and well on her toes, lovely headed bitch, strength but still no doubt about her sex, lovely round bone, straight front, good arch to neck, depth in brisket, balance in head and body, short coupled and strength in hindquarters, covered the ground with ease and condence giving her the edge. 2. Presland & Vincents Ir Ch. Kofyn Karbon Footprint. Nice b/br/w, good body shape and substance to match. Longer in head and not the balance of 1. Good ears, nice front, plenty between legs, well boned. Not the condence of 1 on the move. 3. Austins Elizabeth I Trooping The Colour.
