Topic or Unit of Study: The Great Gatsby and the American Dream Grade/Level: 11/12 Objective: Students will be able to discuss their initial ideas of the American Dream and be able to write effective factual and interpretive questions. Summary: Students will form initial understandings of the American Dream through a write/pair/share activity. The teacher will share a brief Powerpoint on question types. Students will practice forming question types through a discussion of Langston Hughes Let America Be America Again.

IMPLEMENTATION Common Core Standard:


1.2a Students will generate and respond to questions. 2.4e Students will interpret, analyze, and evaluate the influence of culture, history, and ethnicity on themes and issues in literature.

Procedure/Sequence of Activities: 1. The teacher will introduce the next unit with quick write in response to question: What is the American Dream? Students will pair and share their ideas. 2. The teacher will introduce "Let America Be America Again" by saying this is Langston Hughes' opinion on the American Dream. 3. Students will read through it silently first, then listen to the poem. 4. While reading and listening, students will need to write at least 3 questions about the poem on an index card 5. The teacher will explain and define the three types of questions (factual, interpretive, and universal) with a powerpoint.

6. Students will classify their questions about Let America Be America Again as one of the three question types. 7. The teacher will collect the index cards while the students form a fishbowl chair set-up. Students will have the poem and the Fishbowl Discussion Sheet with them in their seats. Each student will also receive two pennies 8. The teacher will explain the fishbowl procedures to the students. 9. Students will discuss the questions on their index cards. Differentiated Instruction: y y Quick write prompts will be in the form of a Powerpoint with several supporting questions. The poem will be read twice, once accompanied by a recording.
