Review of James Nachweys Work James Nachwey photographs very tense subject matter.

In addition, he tells a story of indescribable suffering and destruction through his photographs. I think he photographs this particular subject so the public gets an insight of the complex situation in countries other than their own. Nachwey states, "I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated." It is clear, Nachwey is on a mission to restore peace and tranquility in this destitute era. His photographs show the physical and emotional suffering people face. Furthermore, Nachwey exposes the intense emotions of the people, illustrating their anguish.

Analyzing Photographs

Indonesia, 1998 - Jubilation at announcement of Suharto' s resignation. I find this photograph rather moving. The expression on their faces show the tension risen by Suhartos resignation. In particular, the focus is given to their facial expressions, eliminating all other physical elements.

Alabama, 1994 - Prisoner on the chain gang. The angle at which this particular photograph was taken is distinct.

East Germany, 1990 - Pollution from a coke factory. This photograph appeals to me for several reasons. First, I am taken aback by the setting in which the snapshot was taken. The clouds in the background add to the bleak statement the photojournalist is trying to display. Second, I like the fact that the person positioned in the center of the image is seen as an anonymous figure. Lastly, the being is enclosed in a smoky surrounding which adds to the desolate habitat.

Chechnya, 1996 - Ruins of central Grozny. An unparalleled image, it is! A young boy is positioned center right, with a portion of his head observed. Zooming out, we inspect the setting. It seems as though the boy is renouncing a place of eradication and divergence, seeking refuge, to a place far, far, away.

In this photograph, Serbias first presidents picture is clawed down by rebels. This treacherous man was deservingly ranked 19th in the list of The Worlds Worst Dictators.Citizen express their irritation and dissatisfaction. Nachwey mindfully chose to eliminate all body parts excluding the hands and arms.
