What is a Antonomasia?
y The word derives from the Greek word antonomazein

meaning "to name differently".


y Also Known As: nominatio, pronominatio,

prosonomasia
y Definition: A rhetorical term for the substitution of a

title, epithet, or descriptive phrase for a proper name (or of a personal name for a common name) to designate a member of a group or class.

y Antonomasia is a rhetoric device where a word

or phrase for a proper name is substituted for example when his majesty is used for a king.
y Conversely it also refers to the use of a proper

name such when a wise man is called a Solomon or when an eminent scientist is called an Einstein
