SWOT is commonly used as part of strategic planning and looks at: Internal strengths Internal weaknesses Opportunities in the external environment Threats in the external environment
S - STRENGTHS
1. Elicits students prior knowledge. Students have to brainstorm their ideas and try to listing everything they know about the topic.
4. Encourage students to make a critical thinking -students need to fill in the L column by thinking what they had
ability.
- Students learn new topic and put an effort to study more about the topic in order to update their knowledge.
W - WEAKNESSES
1. Difficult for students with no prior knowledge. - Students have a problem to listing in K column and hard for them to have a general idea of the topic.
3. Not effective for reading fiction materials. -Readers do not have any idea about the story or novel. So , this
O - OPPORTUNITIES
1. Can train students to do or read something in a more organized manner.
- Students would be familiar with organizing the points while reading materials.
2. Encourage students to read more academical materials instead of reading fictional materials
- The KWL technique is more suitable for academical/factual materials.
T - THREATS
1. Takes longer time to be applied in the class. - Students need longer time to fill in K and W columns before and during reading and need to fill in the L columns after finish reading 2. Student may be not interested with the technique used. - students need to go through a few steps by recall their prior knowledge and filling the columns before and after reading
