Service OAM model

Maarten Vissers February 2008

Network Layers
Transport networks typically have three layers:
Network Service layer Network Tunnel layer I-NNI, E-NNI and UNI Transmission Media layer

Those layers support customer signals located in a 4th layer, which from the viewpoint of the transport network is a:
Customer Service layer

To create independence between the customers operation and management and the transport networks operation and management it is required to encapsulate Customer Service signals at the edge of the transport network (i.e. UNI-N interface ports)
Such encapsulation creates independent Customer Service and Network Service layers (client/server relationship)

Occasionally it may not be possible to encapsulate the Customer Service Signal

Without encapsulation the Customer and Network Services layers are the same
