Van Eyck
First Western Painted portrait in 1,000 years which the sitter directly looks at the viewer. Said to be a self-portrait of Van Eyck. The angle of the eyes were made to an illusion, in which the viewer is always returned with a gaze.

Van Eyck
An adoption of oil-painting and the medium of painting blossomed into printmaking as a major art-form. Van Eyck established and popularized oil-based painting with a wooden frame fixture. Rather than applying oil paint in the lighter areas, artist flecked brushstrokes that tempera encouraged to lay down layers of oil in transparency.

The bottom left and right corners depict the donors while Van Eyck was making it. They are kneeling and praying at stone statues of John the Baptist & Saint John the Evangelist.

The inside of the Ghent altarpiece shows superbly colored painting of humanitys redemption through Christ from original sin of Adam and Eve whom are on the top left and right corners.

Robert Campin

Robert Campin was one of the earliest masters of oil painting. Many called him Master of Flmalle
Through using tempera (egg mixed with wet paste of ground pigment) allowed artist to build up deep tones through repeated glazing. However, with the invention of oil-based, this allowed artist to rework the image longer.

This image holds the use of wooden bars to stretch canvas.
