MY SCHOLARSHIP
I am, by nature and experience, an interdisciplinary scholar. My focus is on contributing to the emerging field and discipline of Civic Studies. I work with academics and practitioners to better understand and promote robust citizenship. In accord with the Civic Studies community, I understand citizenship as a distinctive civic ideal and set of practices involving civic agency and collaborative public work. I am committed to bringing academic and practical insights to bear in situations where communities are essential stakeholders and co-creators of public goods and knowledge. I see scholarship as extending beyond my writing to involve the ways that I apply my professional knowledge in the public arena. My academic contributions have been in the area of religion in public life as well as related publications focusing on civic agency. Although my publications span a wide audience, my focus remains consistent as an effort to understand effective civic action and promote environments that encourage it. This exploration extends from studies of neuroscience and related effects on individual agency to the study of community and the ways individuals collaborate for collective action.

MY LEADERSHIP & TEACHING
My leadership approach is based on the civic agency and public problem solving skills I seek to develop in students. Through extensive study and leadership experience, I focus on building consensus to address common problems. I pay close attention to the assets that every team member brings and empower them to be a key player in finding innovative solutions. In addition to the qualities gained through experience in formal adminstration and financial management, I have developed a strong commitment to growth through effective teamwork and see myself as a motivator and guide to creative problem solving. I believe teaching extends far beyond the classroom. The environments we create dramatically affect the ways in which students learn. I find creative ways of connecting course learning objectives to real life experience. I focus on empowering students to learn academic material, think critically, and see themselves as agents of positive change in a diverse world.
