JOAN RIEHL SISCA

Rachelle B. Geronimo
Personal Info: Joan Riehl was born in Davenport, Iowa spent most of her childhood and young adult life in a Chicago suburb. She attended the University of Illinios, where she obtained her BSN. Conceptual Models for Nursing a book by Joan Riehl and Sister Callista Roy The book introduced a new theory of nursing that dealt with the basic problem faced by nurses and medical/psychological helpers for the patients who were active. Nursing Theorist and their Works A book where Marniner and Tommy describes the SELF CONCEPT MODULE OF NURSING proposed by Riehl-Sisca. Here, they suggested that a nurse must assess the actions by the individual patient and she should try to view those actions in appropriate way as the patient perceives them. With proper implicit and explicit role playing the nurse will acquire the understanding of the actions of the patient. She will learn why a patient performs a certain action and in what conditions. This knowledge will help the nurse to identify the exact source of difficulty and it will provide a base for the nursing diagnosis CLAIMS of Joan Riehl Sisca >The self-concept refers to a "global, relatively constant selfperception that an individual holds and it changes only gradually" (as cited in Marriner-Tomey, 1989, p. 255). >The Riehl Interaction Model uses the nursing process in implementing nursing care. Symbolic Interactionism >According to this theory, people try to interpret the actions of each other and the interpretation is often based upon the meaning attached to the action and only then they react. >It is a continuous process between stimulus and response. >Riehls suggestions emphasizes on the proper assessment and better interpretation of the actions by the patients that are being served and observed by a nurse. The nurse is then required to assess and predict the nature of the patient and his or her behavior. >Such interactive interpretation is necessary especially in the cases of individual therapy and the family therapy. >Every nurse remains concerned about the role of family in the treatment of the patient. The assessment and interpretation of the actions of the patient by the nurse is done to plan proper interventions with the patients family and the patient him or herself. >As per Riehl, the nurse and the patient involves in an active exchange of information that can be collected and used by the nurse for the betterment in mental and physical health of the patient. The nurse may use all this information about the patient to employ multiple theories, therapies and allied

health disciplines, she may also provide a plan for the interventions of the family member in the patients health improvement Four key concepts of Riehls Theory 1.People people, individually and collectively, are prepared to act on the basis of the meaning of the objects that comprise their world. The term person includes the patient, the nurse, doctors & other health professionals. Riehl describes the nurse as one who knows her capabilities, is self-directed, and assumes more than one role in a given period. 2. Association The association of people is necessarily in the form of a process in which they are making indications to one another and interpreting each others indication. Is the defining process of role taking. Role taking occurs when an individual cognitively internalises another persons perceptions of reality in varied situations. It involves proper assessment & interpretation of the actions of the patient by the nurse With a proper and appropriate association between her and the patient, a nurse can plan an effective intervention. 3. Social Acts Social acts, whether individual or collective, are constructed through a process in which the actors note, interpret, and assess the situations confronting them. Their interpretation of these situations influence their social acts toward each other. This concept allows the nurse to assess and respond more appropriately to a patients behaviour. Social acts are the constructs that are made by the individual or a collective group through a process that includes observation and interpretation of the situations and actions confronted by the actors. A nurse can assess these social acts and plan proper intervention for the benefit of the patient. 4. Interlinkages The complex interlinkages of acts that comprise organizations, institutions, division of labour, and networks of interdependency are moving and not static affairs. From this concept Riehl derives that patient assessment is a dynamic process that often necessitates the use of several resources in meeting patients needs, particularly in long term care. SUMMARY PERSON - is specific term that is used for the nurse, the patient, doctors and other health professionals. NURSING HEALTH ENVIRONMENT CRITICS His idea of assessing an individual through his action is helpful for nurses to determine the real need of the patient It emphasized the importance of knowing your patient well before giving care It helps nurses learn how to broaden & improve their assessment skills by being observant of all cues coming from the patient
