Sherwood Artist Presentation: James Marshall James Marshall Biography In the year of 1972, James Marshall relaxing on hammock as he started to draw inspire by his mother watching Whos Afraid of Virginia Wolf. He created his first two main characters, hippos named George and Martha. James Marshall was born October 10 1942, died three days in 1992. Marshall was known for his illustrations for own books like George and Martha and Miss Nelson is Missing. He was raised in Texas before writing his plan was to study playing the violin earns himself scholarship to New Englands Conservatory of Music, but unfortunately injures his hand during a airplane flight. So he later attends college in South Connecticut State University major in French and History. James always loved since he was in second grade but gave after a teacher laughed at his work. Then in adulthood he took the hobby while teaching a friend took his drawings to someone in publishing. Marshall later was contacted by the director of Houghton-Mifflin offer him a contract. Even though his first assignment was a failure, he didnt give up because he knew illustrating is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. The second time around things got better when he create George and Martha in 1972. After the success of George and Martha he co-author series of books, he produce his own series of books called Fox. After the publishing of the Fox books, he helped Harry Allard with the Miss. Nelson series. The span of his career consist of him co-writing, writing, and illustrating forty more books til he lost his life due to a brain tumor..

Humor is often display in Marshalls work. His work hardly changes due fairytale characters. Marshall uses life to Imitate in his work, for instance in Miss. Nelsons. Also you may notice a lot of cats in his books and stacks items that fall over to recall the works of Dr. Seuss. His work includes his mischievous plots and characters in capturing the hearts of children and their parents. James Marshall delighted readers with relatively little text and simple drawings. It only took two minute for him to draw dots for eyes, creating characters able to express emotion, and produce laughter from both children and adults. His accomplishments include, his books being named three times for New York Times for best illustrated books of the year.
