3 Assessment Evidence Students accurately draw and give a brief description of the butterfly life cycle. 4. Opening Hook I am a type of insect. There are 24,000 species of my kind. I only see red, yellow and green, I taste with my feet and my average life span ranges from 1 week to 9 months. What am I? 5. Instructional Strategies / Student Activities Input: 4 stages of the butterfly life cycle: Egg: different shapes depending on the type, very small, laid on leafs they can eat Larva (caterpillar): Eat A LOT, grow quickly but skin does not stretch, grow by molting(shedding skin) Pupa (chrysalis): Incapable of movement, Metamorphosis (limbs, tissue, organs change, underside of a leaf Adult Butterfly: Wings are soft and folded (pump blood to inflate wings 30 min 3 hours), Vulnerable to predators, learn to fly and find a mate to start the cycle again Modeling Handouts (have students take notes), show video of process Guided Practice work sheet (Life cycle of a butterfly) CFU Name one stage of the butterfly cycle. In what stage does the insect eat A LOT? Where are the eggs laid? How long does it take the adult butterfly to pump blood to its wings? Why are adult butterflies vulnerable to predators? Why are the eggs laid on leafs and nut buried for safety? Why do you think the butterflies reproduce so much? Independent Practice Draw a picture of each stage and describe what happens in each one 6.
