inscription of Avram found in Cernoglavtsi
Anna-Maria Totomanova
Summary
The article proposes a new explanation of the famous inscription of
Avram found in Cernoglavtsi by T. Balabanov. The analysis is based on the
morph syntactic relations between , which is a Nom. Sg and ,
which might only be an Acc. Sg with a Genitive ending. Such forms are typical
of Old Bulgarian u-stems and are well described in all grammars available. The
analysis allows the author to presume that with all probability means
tower, castle and is similar to the German Turm. The connection with the old
Turkish turma, turmo are not to be excluded as well. And therefore
describes a significant event when the tower/castle was
destroyed by a group of robbers. The latter could enable us in the future to
determine the year when Avram wrote his epigraph.
