In the first three chapters of Charles Lipsons Doing Honest Work in College, Lipson expounds the ways in which students and faculty of universities can properly avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism occurs when one imitates the work of another and does not cite the source. Thus, academic integrity is violated. Lipson lays out the rules of citation, and states that sources should always be cited, whether one is writing a paper, participating in a lab, or taking an open book test. Lipson further extends the scope of academic honesty to group work, lab notes, and class notes. He encourages active participation in group work and citations of fellow students group assignments, he urges students to record all data truthfully during lab experiments, and he reminds students to clearly mark quotations in their notes to avoid accidental plagiarism. Doing Honest Work in College emphasizes that academic honesty is of high importance, because it paves the road for truthfully learned education.
