DESIGNERS MANUAL

Introduction
Closed strucrurols(RHS/SHS) already established world over as comparatively are more efficient steel sections, These are now rapidly gaining popularity among innovative engineers and orcnnects in our country, owing to Inherent qualities like exCellent strength to weight ratio, costeffectlveness, simplified fabrication, lesser maintenance due to ~lgher resistance to corrosion. beMer fire resistance and lrnproved aesthetics. Users have .expressed a pressing need for a Re,ference Manual containing related dote and information. TATASTEEL Tubes Dlvision. being the pioneer and the largest producer of RHS(SHS the in country, is pleased to toke the initlatlve to publish this Manudl to the advantage of deSigners and In the Interests'of further popularising the use of these elegant structur-al element. ThisManual provioes o range of "Ready-to-Use" designs for pitched Roof Trusses ranging from 5.SSm to 40.0m spans and Lean-to }russes ranging from 1.5 m to Q.4m spans each in two different slopes. This also provides designs for Purlins,Side Grits etc. covering various industrial requirements. keeping in mind prevailing practice. For comparison and ready reference, recommended material requirement for roof truss of spans 9m, 12m. 24m, and 30m desfg, netl with conventional sections have been drown from BIS Handbook, SP38-1987 and placed alongwlth RHS /SHS requirement and possible savin-gs_, of single RHS/SHS struts, ti.e members, beams and as
SHS have also been included for designers' reference, It has been our sincere
endeavour to make this Manual on outnentlc. reliable and useful one. in keeping with the reputation of Toto Steel. User's suggestions on corrections or inclusions on the contents are welcome to make this publication accept richer and we hope that practising engineers will

General Notes
Roof Trusses.Purllns. Side girts etc. for Industrial Sheds are designed with cold finished. RHS/SHS,manufactured by TATA STEELTubes Division. Pitched roof trusses for rectangular clad buildings of 13 different spans and lean-to trusses of 7 different spans for six wind zones, as mapped by Bureau of Indian standards, and each span having 2 different slopes Le. 1 In 3 and 1 in 4, have been considered to cover various practical combinations of roof truss system and existing manufacturing practice in the country, Trussconfigurations for different spans have been arrived at after several trial and error. considering overall economy In terms of savings In,weight and ease of manufacturing. however other configurations may also be tried. Trusses hav.? been analysed assuming rigid member to member connections except at ridge and hanger Joints. Design has been prepared for simply supported condition and reaction values tabutated accordingly. Trusseshave been analysed for Dead Load, Superimposed Load, Wind load and combinations thereof according to IS : 875-87. Only nodal loads have been considered for the purl ins to be located .strtctlv at node points, based on the maximum allowable span of AC. sheeting. For other roofinq material allowing longer span, sultoble change In truss configuration should be tried. For Wind Load combihation allowable stresses have been increased by 33.33% as per provisions of IS : 80.6. Effedve length of each member has been assumed to be 0.9 t.lmes the node to node dIstance, In case of compression loading, member has been designed against .buckling in and out of plane of truss. Maximum Slenderness Ratio for compression member has bE:}enrestricted to 180 and that for tension member has en kep ess an '. aXlmum Deflection of mJd span node of truss has been restricted to "Span/325". )For calculation of total weight of trusses; allowance of additional 10% in case of RHSisHS and 25% In case of conventional section (Ref. BIS : SP-38, 1987). of actual member weights of Purlln-prOP and other conneotlng cleats and plates on truss for Purlins.TIe-runners and Bracing are to be added to assess the total weight of Roof Truss system. Though the comparative weights have been drawn from BIS:SP-38for ready reference. the WInd Load considered therein as per old version of IS : 875 is found to be much on the lower side. RHS/SHS stili being considered as non-conventional section, fypical fabrication detailing for different spans have been incorporated giving importance to the fact rhot practiSing Structural Engineers may find he!pful as ready reference.

CORROSION
RESISTANT
PPOPERTIES
1. Internal corrosion cannot occur in sealed closed structurals as water is excluded and oxygen unrsplenished. Only external surface needs protection. 2. RHS/SHS have a smooth continuous profile with non re-entrant comers which do nol trap dirt and water. RHS/SHS do not require stripe coating as they have no edg-es and sharp comers.
INTERNAL CORROSION - a case study.
Sample 1
Two of the onginal 'T ubewrighls' erected in 1954 at Stamtord Bridge, Chelsea, were replaced in 1975. taken down and the used sections were cut and despatched to the Corby Works of British Steel for examination. Sample NO.1 of the 139.7 mrn o.d. CHS was cut lengthwise to expose the internal surtaces lor examination. Little evidence 01 internal corrosion was found other than a discolouration of the surtace caused by theC!.xygenand moisture in the entrapped air: much of the original mill scale was still visible. A light rust in the centre of the sample developed after the tube was cui open for examination. Sample No.2 of the 139.7 mm o.d. CHS incorporating an intermediate flanged joint was examined and the condition' of the internal flange face, which had been enclosed and thus hermetically sealed by welding to the CHS, was still comparatively bright. with the original marking-off lines clearly Visible.

CORROSION
THE CASE
The following historical examples demonstrate that corrosion will not occur on the internal surface of sealed hollow sections. Certain of the exarnlnatlon referred to have also indicated that, even when weld seams are not perfectly sealed or small holes have been made in the section, traces of superficial rust only can be detected in the immediate neighbournood of the appropriate welds or holes. Application Location Comment Period of Service of sample (years) 40-50 Examination
Pittsburg. USA
At least 22,000 such poles Were installed. Some 18,000 still in servlcetoday No corrosion damage visible on any column in the .series Application swbjectto aggresive manneenvironment. Two davits donated tor research when ship scrapped
Thicknesses of sscfion walls still within orginal manufacturing tolerances Internal surfaces still bore biriginal mill scale. No pitting of steel No internal corrosion
