EE341 Problems Using PowerWorld Simulator

By Hossam Talaat

About PowerWorld

It is an interactive power system simulation package designed to simulate power system operation. An educational version of 12-bus can be freely downloaded from: www.powerworld.com

ASSUMPTIONS

Frequency is constant. Transients are not considered. Slack bus mut be defined. If load flow is failed to converge a blackout is assumed.

Program Components

Two files are created per case study:

*.pwd file for on-line diagram. *.pwb file for simulation data.

Two modes of operation:

Edit mode: to construct new simulation cases or to modify existing cases. Run mode: to perform the actual power system simulation.

One Line Diagram

Elements: Bus, generator, transformer, load, AC line, DC line, shunt capacitor, circuit breaker. Element appearance is user-defined: orientation, size, thickness, color. Elements data display is user-defined. Size and rate of animated flows can be controlled.

Bus Information/Data display
