    Hemoglobin transports oxygen in the blood by binding to oxygen molecules in the lungs when oxygen levels are high and releasing oxygen to myoglobin in muscles when oxygen levels decrease. The binding of oxygen to one subunit of hemoglobin increases the affinity of the other subunits, allowing for efficient oxygen transport and delivery to tissues via changes in hemoglobin and myoglobin saturation levels responding to environmental oxygen pressures in the lungs, arteries, muscles and veins.
