What is Twitter?
According to Wikipedia:
Online
social networking service A microblogging service Allows users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters Known as "tweets
Students will be encouraged to use Twitter to Tweet as a means of communication in the classroom.
The
students can respond to instructor-provided questions and discussion points. The students can respond to other students in the class. The instructor can interact with the class.
What is needed:
Computer
The options for free email accounts The procedures for creating an email account The procedures for creating a Twitter account The techniques for using Twitter effectively in the classroom
Basic computer skillsaccessing the Internet A familiarity with using a smart phone for text entries The procedure to download and install the Twitter application on the smart phone The process for constructing appropriate and concise responses
Using their smart phone, students will be asked to complete the following:
Log
into their Twitter account Follow the class discussion Become active participants of the class discussion via Twitter tweets
Provide feedback
Advantages
More engaging All-inclusive On-demand review and participation Improved retention due to participation Improved motivation Improved accountability Immediate feedback
Possible Disadvantages
Not all may have access to an Internetenabled smart phone Some may be uneasy with the technology Some may struggle with the text limitations Could be distracting
LESSON 2
Using Study Boost with SMS and IM to Study for Exams
Interactive social media studying tool Students can answer self- or teacher-created questions Uses SMS text messaging or instant messaging
Students are provided with a on-demand study tool. Teachers and students are able to add questions. Every member of the class can answer the questions using either SMS or IM technologies. Immediate feedback on correctness of the responses is provided.
What is needed:
Computer
and Internet access to set up a Study Boost account Access to https://studyboost.com/ smart phones (ideally with an unlimited text messaging plan)
The procedures for creating a Study Boost account The techniques for using Study Boost effectively in the classroom
Basic computer skillsaccessing the Internet A familiarity with using a smart phone to create SMS or IMs
Using their smart phone, students will be asked to complete the following:
Use
either SMS or IM technologies to respond to a series of course-related questions Students will possible use either SMS or IM technologies to create batches of questions
Advantages
SMS and IM technologies are already familiar The device (the smart phone) is readily available to most Remote access to the innovation Immediate feedback Adjustable content Student participation encouraged Student interaction
Possible Disadvantages
Some may not have access to a smart phone Of those with smart phones, some may not have access to unlimited messaging plans Some may be uncomfortable with the technology
IN CLOSING
At the end . . .
Although my lessons are more general in nature, they both can be applied in any of my classes for any material. A note of caution: if using in a public-school setting, be careful to discuss such projects with parents and administrators.
