Argument Analysis - Draft Name: Conor Scanlon Student I.

D: 11130873 Module: AW4002 Tutor: Laura Costelloe In this article by John Waters, which was written in 'The Irish Times', Waters discusses the drink related problem in Ireland. He looks at what is the problem, where it came from, the consequences of drinking and why it is not something the government are willing to attack head on. In his first sentence he sets out what he is talking about and the problem stating 'We are used to politicians running scared of proposals to tackle Irelands lethal relationship with alcohol'. immediatly he tells us what the article is about and also, what the problem is with it. He proceeds to state that a plan is going to be rolled out to deal with the problem by Risn Shortall, the Minister of State at the Department of Health. He believes a proper plan is needed as he goes go to talk about the effects of drinking. He states that drink related problems are filling up hospital beds on any given night. There is problems with this statement use of statistics as he does not back this statistic up with a reference, nor does he tell us where he got this statistic from. This weakens his argument as he is not using solid fact.
