Solar Energy Lesson 7 My Virtual Plant Subject Area: Science Grade Level: 1st Grade

I.

Michigan Content Standards E.ES.01.12. Demonstrate the importance of sunlight and warmth in plant growth.

II.

Objective I can give a plant everything it needs to survive by playing a plant game online. I can explain why a plant needs sunlight in a whole group discussion.

III.

Anticipatory Set The teacher will teach the students a song about planting and growing seeds to the tune of Farmer in the Dell. The farmer plants the seeds. (put seeds in the ground) The farmer plants the seeds. High ho the derry oh, The farmer plants the seeds. Second Verse: The sun comes out to shine. (make big circle with arms) Third Verse: The rain begins to fall. (hands flutter to the ground) Fourth Verse: The seeds begin to grow. (children begin to rise) Fifth Verse: The farmer digs them up. (pretend to use a shovel) Now we'll have some to eat. (pretend to eat)

TTW tell the students that they need to raise their hand and have the teacher check their plant at the end of the game viii. TSW plant a virtual plant and give it everything it needs to survive. ix. TSW raise their hand at the end of the game and explain to the teacher why his or her plant survived or why it did not. x. If the plant did not survive, the student needs to replay the game. xi. The class will come back from the computer lab and meet as a whole group. xii. TTW ask the students the four things a plant needs to survive. xiii. TTW ask the students why a plant needs sunlight (plants need light and warmth from the sun.) B. Thinking Levels a. Knowledge: I can state the things a plant needs to grow. b. If the student struggles with growing a virtual plant, the teacher will discuss the things a plant needs to survive with him or her. The teacher will guide him or her through the game. c. Modeling a.
