Kayla OBrien EDU 5170 EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY I English: Grade 9 Standards: 1.a.

Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking (interpretation of elements in Cinematography) and inventiveness 2.a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools (You tube, Edmodo) and resources (Word Search, Vocabulary list, Dictionary) to promote student learning and creativity 3.c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats (Teacher website, Edmodo, You tube) Common Core: 9-10 1.b Work with peers to set rules for collegial discussions and decisionmaking (e.g., informal consensus, taking votes on key issues, and presentation of alternate views), clear goals and deadlines, and individual roles as needed. 2. Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source. 3. Listening: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation for multiple levels of meaning, articulated and unspoken. 4.a Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph; a words position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. Lesson Objective(s): Students will identify vocabulary associated with the study of film. Students will identify the elements of film study within the visual media they are presented with. Students will discuss film studies terms and be able to use appropriate

vocabulary. Students will be able to interpret the elements of film study in a manner to better their understanding of visual media. Introduce the Learning Activity: Students will be given a brief introduction about the lesson ahead. After that a handout (http://www.scribd.com/doc/92599154/Cinamatography-Word-Search) with a word search for film studies will be passed around the class room. Students then work on finding the word and matching that word up with the vocabulary sheet ( http://www.scribd.com/doc/92604186/VocabularyList ) from the website. Describe how you will communicate the lesson objective to the students. How will you tell them what they will learn in this lesson? Students will be provided with motivation through a game like activity with the Word Search. Provide Information: Definitions will be provided by correlation with the word search that the students will participate in at the beginning of the lesson. Alongside the activity students will be directed to the teachers website Provide Practice: Students will practice what they have learned by being separated into several groups across the classroom. Each group will then be assigned a video clip from a film and they will watch it a few times. While watching it the students are required to write out the elements of film study that they recognize. After they have completed their observations students will then, either in a group or separate once again, interpret what the use of the aspect implies about the scene. Describe how you will give students an opportunity to practice

the exact task stated in the objective individually, as well as in groups. (You may have only individual practice, but not solely group practice.) Scene one - Night of the Hunter: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=3dOrzvz2b_Q Scene two - Double Indemnity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r69dQZHjkmY Scene Three - Harry Potter 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=T4lSF47-pqY Scene four - Richard III : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjJEXkbeL-o Provide Knowledge of Results: Students will receive verbal feedback from interacting with the class and the teacher. Prior to finishing the exercise with the film clips there will be a discussion about what the students noticed and whether or not they felt the elements of mise en scene added any additional interpretation to the film or not. Students will have to respond to the videos on Edmodo as a form of written feedback. Each group will comment beneath the video that is assigned to them and that can be reviewed by group and class members as well as the teacher. Review the Activity: The activity in which the students will get hands on experience with the technology begins with the Edmodo account and splitting into several groups. Each group will consist of 2 to 3 students each. Once the groups are split they will count off 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, ect each number corresponds with a video of the same number. The corresponding video will be the one that each group of students watches and analyzes for elements of Mise en Scene. Method of Assessment: The assessment of students skills acquired through this lesson will be based upon their ability to recognize and name the elements of the study of film. The students assessment is also based on how the student interprets the elements of visual study to deduce a meaning

based upon the aspects of film study.
