Jose Rizal was a Filipino nationalist and writer during the Spanish colonial period. He was born to a wealthy family and received an education in Manila, Spain, France, and Germany. He wrote two novels, Noli Me Tangere in 1886 and El Filibusterismo in 1891, which criticized the Spanish Catholic friars and their abuses in the Philippines. Rizal was eventually exiled to Dapitan in 1892 and executed by the Spanish in 1896 for his nationalist ideas and involvement with revolutionary groups.
