Title Aim

: Electroplating Experiment : To prove that we can electroplate materials by the help of electricity. By practically doing this experiment we can also learn more about the process of electroplating. : The color of the coin will turn into brown, as how the color of copper is. :

Hypothesis Tools and Materials

2 coins (copper coin and silver coin) Wire and crocodile clips Power supply (1.5 volts) A cup Dilute acid solution (vinegar, etc.) A scissor Sellotape A marker :

Procedures / Steps

1. Use the crocodile clip attached to the wire to clip the tip of the coins, one coin, one crocodile clip, and one wire. And then cover the crocodile clip with the sellotape so it will not be electroplated.

2. Make a mark on the cup as high as the coin from the bottom of the glass to the top of the coins. (Use marker) When youre done with the marking, take out the coin

3. Fill in some dilute acid as much as required (until the volume reached the marked area). 4. Connect the wire connecting to both coins the terminals of the battery. One wire each terminal. 5. Put the 2 coins on the acid solution provided. 6. Wait for around 2 or 3 hours. Observe.

Observation Result

When we put the coin inside the acidic solution, there are bubbles formed during the process. Slowly, the coin turned color. The coin attached to the cathode is the coin electroplated. Since the negative terminal is connected to the 1000 rupiah coin, the color of th 1000 rupiah coin turn into brown.

Discussion

In electrolysis, a compound can be broken down by electricity. The cation will be attracted to the cathode, while the anion will be attracted to the anode. On the two electrodes, the ions will be neutralised. Application on the experiment: The cooper at the anode will be oxidized, forming Cu+2 ion. The cation will naturally be attracted to the cathode. On the cathode, the Cu+2 will reduce to form copper atom on the surface of the silver coin. After a few hours the coin the cathode will have enough copper atoms covering it, so the color will be similar to the color of copper. Conclusion :

On the anode there will be process of oxidation. On the cathode there will be process of reduction. When ions are being oxidized or reduced (receive or give) it becomes neutral. When ion is said to be neutral it has been electrolyzed. We can apply the process of electrolysing in the process of electroplating.
