When they are fully grown they go back to the sea. From lakes or ponds, they wriggle over the land until they find a river. They are able to live a long time out of water because their gills are not like other fish. From the rivers they swim to the middle of the ocean. Then they dive to the bottom and the females lay their eggs. The parents die as soon as the baby eels are born. The baby eels are flat and look like glass. They now begin their long swim to the land.
