Nutrition has a profound effect on the quality of tooth structure. Well-formed teeth
are inherently resistant to decay—poorly formed teeth are very cavity prone. The
three main nutritional factors that determine the quality of tooth structure are:

1. The fat-soluble vitamin content of the diet—mainly vitamins A, D and K2

2. The mineral content of the diet

3. The bio-availability of minerals for absorption—directly related to the diet's


phytic acid content

When the tooth is de-mineralized, decayed or traumatized, the odontoblasts
perform the important self-healing role of laying down a protective layer of
reparative dentin. In other words:

Teeth are designed to be self-cleansing, self-healing and self-repairing

So what about sugar and bacteria?


I don’t subscribe to the “germ theory of disease”. One of the basic premises of my
health philosophy is that germs don’t cause disease directly. I believe germs
selectively invade a weakened and susceptible host . This is why we can all be
exposed the cold virus but only some of us will actually get the cold . . . those who
are most vulnerable to infection.

The same idea holds true for tooth decay. In my opinion, bacteria and acids are
part of the tooth decay process but are not the cause of tooth decay. Healthy, well-
formed teeth with densely mineralized enamel and dentin are highly resistant to the
effects of bacterial acids.

The published research of Dr. W.D. Miller in the late 1800’s formed the basis of the
American Dental Association’s position on dental decay. The ADA theory is that:

 Bacterial plaque on the teeth eat sugar and poop acid

 The bacterial acid de-mineralizes and invades the enamel and dentin

 The bacterial invasion creates an infection called dental decay

In other words, according to the American Dental Association, bacteria cause the
tooth to become de-mineralized, weakened and vulnerable to decay.

Unfortunately, the ADA didn’t study Dr. Miller’s work in detail. This is what he
really said:

“The extent to which any tooth suffers from the action of acid depends upon its
density and structure, but more particularly upon the perfection of the enamel.
What we might call the prefect tooth would resist indefinitely the same acid to
which a tooth of opposite character would succumb in a few weeks.”

Dr. Miller also wrote:

“The invasion of the micro-organism is always preceded by the extraction of


lime salts.”

In other words:

First the tooth becomes de-mineralized and vulnerable and then it


becomes attacked by bacteria and their acids . . . not the other way around

What about genetics?


Aren’t some people just born with “bad teeth”? Well, I don’t subscribe to the germ
theory not do I buy the idea that our genetics determines our destiny. Our genetics
may define our vulnerabilities, but our environment determines whether or not they
will become our reality. When it comes to developing strong teeth that are resistant
to tooth decay, diet plays a much bigger role than genetics.

The proof that the body can prevent and heal dental decay started accumulating in
the early 1900’s under the research two scientific hero’s of mine, Sir Edward
Mellanby and Dr. Weston Price.

Edward Mellanby, and his wife, Dr. May Mellanby, identified dietary factors that
control the formation and repair of teeth and bones. Their research began in the
1910s and continued through the 1940s. His landmark book, Nutrition and Disease,
was published in 1934.

Dr. Weston Price studied “primitive” cultures with robust health, complete
resistance to dental decay, straight teeth and beautiful broad smiles. His work was
documented in Nutrition and Physical Degeneration—originally published in 1939
and currently in its 19th printing.

What Drs. Mellanby and Price discovered about tooth and bone formation is
profound, simple and largely forgotten. Most “modern” dentists believe that:

 Strong, well-formed, decay-resistant teeth are the result of genetics

 Sugar causes cavities

 Once initiated, cavities cannot be reversed

Drs. Mellanby and Price both proved that epigenetic factors (such as nutrition) are
more important than DNA, that sugar is not the cause of tooth decay and that even
large cavities can be healed with proper nutrition.

In essence, Drs. Mellanby and Price showed tooth decay can be prevented
AND reversed with a proper diet.

The Anti-cavity Diet of Drs. Mellanby


Drs. Mellanby were interested in the effects of nutrition on cases of existing tooth
decay. In a study published in both the British Medical Journal and the British
Dental Journal, they studied children with existing cavities. A total of 62 children
were studied over 6 months and divided into three diet groups. Group 1 ate their
normal diet plus oatmeal . Group 2 ate their normal diet plus vitamin D. Group 3
ate a grain-free diet and took vitamin D.

In group 1, oatmeal prevented healing and encouraged new cavity formation—


presumably due to its high content of the anti-nutrient called phytic acid. In group
2, simply adding vitamin D to their normal diet caused most cavities to heal and far
fewer to form. The most striking effect was in group 3—those eating a grain-free

The overall conclusions of Drs. Mellanby’s research are:

Dr. Price did not understand the role that mineral binding phytic acid played in
tooth decay, but his discovery of “activator X” complemented Drs. Mellanby’s
research

The three fat-soluble vitamins universally abundant in the diets of healthy non-
industrialized people were vitamins A, D, and a substance Price called “activator X”.
According to Dr. Price:

Vitamins A and D and Activator X were synergistic and critical for proper
mineral metabolism—therefore required for healthy teeth, healthy bones and

Price was able to prevent AND reverse tooth decay by supplementing patient’s diets
with activator X rich extracts of grass-fed butter combined with vitamin D and A
rich cod liver oil.

This protocol stimulated the dentin to grow and re-mineralize—sealing what


were once active cavities with a smooth, hard, glassy finish.

His protocol halted the progression of tooth decay and completely reversed active
decay without the need for dental treatment. One 14-year-old girl completely
healed 42 open cavities in 24 teeth by taking capsules of high-vitamin cod liver oil
and Activator X concentrate three times a day for seven months.

Using his protocol, Dr. Price was able to


heal a tooth in which the decay had
entered the pulp. The x-rays reveal the
tooth in self-healing mode—the proof
being a bridge of healthy reparative
dentin that has formed over the pulp.

Unlike the protocol used by Drs. Mellanby, Price's diet was not grain-free. He used
rolls made from freshly ground whole wheat. When freshly ground, whole wheat
retains high phytase activity (the enzyme that degrades phytic acid). This, in
conjunction with the long yeast rises common in Price's time, would have
eliminated much of the phytic acid contained in the rolls. Another vital element in
Price’s protocol was the inclusion of mysterious activator X.

The Mystery of Activator X is Solved

The chemical structure of Price’s activator X remained unknown until just recently—
some 60 years after his discovery. In the spring of 2007, Chris Masterjohn wrote
an article, in which he identified Weston Price's mystery vitamin-like substance as
none other than vitamin K2.

Current research confirms that the food sources for vitamin K2 are exactly as Price
said. We also now know that vitamin K2 is critical for mineral metabolism, bone and
tooth formation / maintenance, and that its function is synergistic with vitamins A
and D . . . exactly as Price claimed some 60+ years ago!

As explained by Stephan Guyenet at Whole Health Source

“The synergism Weston Price observed between vitamins A, D and K2 now has
a solid mechanism. In a nutshell, vitamins A and D signal the production of
some very important proteins, and K2 is required to activate them once they
are made. Many of these proteins are involved in mineral metabolism, thus the
effects Price saw in his experiments and observations in non-industrialized
cultures. For example, osteocalcin is a protein that organizes calcium and
phosphorus deposition in the bones and teeth. It's produced by cells in
response to vitamins A and D, but requires K2 to perform its function. It works
out perfectly, since K2 also protects against vitamin D toxicity.”

An internet search of vitamin K2 will reveal that most current, cutting edge health
advisors are touting the benefits and essential nature of vitamin K2 to be equal in
importance to that of vitamin D. Many doctors and scientists believe that K2 is a
“missing link” that explains many of our modern ills—just as Weston Price wrote.

Regarding food sources for activator X / Vitamin K2, Chris Kresser, L.Ac at The
Healthy Skeptic correctly states:

“It is important to note that commercial butter is not a significantly high source
of vitamin K2. Dr. Price, analyzed over 20,000 samples of butter sent to him
from various parts of the world and found the activator X concentration varied
by as much as 50-fold. Animals grazing on vitamin K-rich cereal grasses,
especially wheat grass, and alfalfa in a lush green state of growth produced fat
with the highest amounts of activator X. Vitamin K2 levels will not be high in
butter from grain-fed cows raised in confinement feedlots that is the source for
most of the butter sold in the U.S. Also worth noting is standard commercial
eggs, even “free-range” supermarket eggs, are not very good sources of
vitamin K2 compared with eggs produced from pastured, free roaming chickens
purchased from a local producer.”

Had Dr. Price understood the issue with grains, I believe his protocols may have
been even more successful. Fossil records show that dental decay was virtually
unknown before the advent of cultivation of wheat, barley and corn about 10,000
years ago.

Our bodies are simply not designed for the eating of grains . . . they contain
numerous plant toxins and anti-nutrients including lectins and phytic acid. Plants
use these toxins as defense mechanisms to prevent animals from eating their
seeds.

Combining the work of Drs. Mellanby and Price provides powerful tools to prevent
and reverse tooth decay. Because it works for everyone, regardless of genetics, you
don’t have to travel back in time to choose different parents!

I continue to tweak the specifics—there is no such thing as perfection in the pursuit


of health, but for now, the basics of my ideal anti-cavity diet include:

 Real, whole, unprocessed food

 High in good quality saturated fat . . . mostly from animal sources

 Moderate in protein . . . again, mostly from animal sources

 Low to moderate in non-grain carbohydrates

 Gluten-free and wheat-free . . . VERY important

 Avoid seed and grain cooking oils

 Limit refined sugar, grains, nuts, seeds and legumes

I realize my recommendations may directly contradict your current understanding


of an optimal diet. Over the past 25 years, I have tried most every dietary theory
out there . . . from Fit For Life to Paleo, from Atkins to Vegan, from D’Adamo Blood
Type to Metabolic Typing and everything in between. After many years of study,
deep thought, clinical experience and self-experimentation, I have found an
approach to food that I believe promotes optimal health for an overwhelming
majority of people.

A thorough discussion of optimal nutrition and optimal health is beyond the scope
of this report. If interested, you can follow my blog for an ongoing dialogue or
consult the resources and the end of this paper.

It just so happens that the diet I subscribe to as optimal for overall health, is
compatible with healthy, strong, densely mineralized, cavity-free, self-healing
teeth. My anti-cavity, optimal health diet is very similar to the ones proven by Drs.
Mellanby and Price to prevent and reverse dental decay:

1. High in animal-derived, fat-soluble vitamins

2. High in bio-available minerals

3. Low in anti-nutrients such as phytates and grain lectins

The Anti-Cavity Protocol

1. Eat a diet rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D and K2 (activator X):

Dr. Price found that native people who had little to no tooth decay were
consuming ten times the amount of fat-soluble vitamins compared to
people in his day—remember, this was in the 1920s-30s, when people ate
substantially more animal fat, lard, tallow and butter than we do today. If
you have tooth decay, presume you are deficient in fat soluble vitamins A,
D and K2.

Eat generous amounts of pastured butter and ghee, full-fat pastured dairy

9. If using grains, stick with white polished rice, fermented grains and
genuine sourdough bread made from unbleached flour (ingredients should
not list lactic acid).

10. No refined sugars or sweeteners, no high fructose corn syrup . . . if you


have cavities, your teeth are weakened and vulnerable to acids

11. Avoid unfermented soy in all forms, even edamame. Soy is very high in
phytic acid—unless it is fermented. Only acceptable forms of soy would be
naturally fermented, wheat-free soy sauce, miso, or natto.

12. Limit processed food

13. No vegetable or seed oils

14. Plenty of sunlight . . . either natural or from a safe sunlamp

15. Good oral hygiene: brushing with a non-glycerin, non-fluoride dentifrice


and irrigation with a hydrofloss

I am not a fan of supplements. I believe our bodies are designed to thrive on food-

based nutrients. With a little work and planning, we can get all the nutrients needed
for optimal health from our food. The only “product” I consume on an ongoing basis
in a high vitamin fermented cod liver oil / butter oil combination similar to the one
used by Dr. Price in his research.

In summary, the ideal ant-cavity/optimal health diet would look like this:

 ½ tsp 2-3 times per day of BLUE ICE Royal™ Butter Oil/Fermented Cod Liver
Oil Blend

 Raw whole fat dairy . . . milk, kefir, whey, yogurt, clabber, buttermilk, crème
fraise, cottage cheese, hard cheese

 Homemade bone broth . . . beef, chicken, fish

 Pastured / Wild Caught animal protein . . . beef, chicken, pork, poultry eggs,
shellfish, fish eggs, organ meat—especially liver including goose liver (foie
gras) and pig liver (Braunschweiger)

 Cooked veggies

 Tubers . . . sweet potato, yam, yucca

 Fermented foods

 Healthy saturated fats . . . coconut oil, butter, ghee, lard, tallow, duck fat

 Genuine sourdough bread (if consuming bread) and polished white rice

A Word About Vegetarian and Vegan Diets


Although he looked, Dr. Price found no vegetarian societies with thriving health and
decay resistance. Some cultures in India are lacto-vegetarian (using water buffalo
milk) and follow a very carefully prepared and precise diet that is not available to
most people outside that culture. While I honor those who choose to follow a
vegetarian lifestyle for ethical, religious or spiritual reasons, I have not witnessed
strict vegetarianism as a health-promoting lifestyle. If you prefer to eat vegetarian
or vegan, I strongly suggest you follow the program developed by Gabriel Cousens,
MD—it is the most intelligent and comprehensive approach to veganism I have
encountered. Also, there is a brief vegetarian section in the book “Cure Tooth
Decay, by Ramiel Nagel”. However, his protocol is lacto-ovo and depends heavily on
dairy and eggs as the source for fat-soluble vitamins . . . it is not vegan.

The Mouth is a Mirror to the Body
While beyond the scope of this article, I would be remiss if I failed to acknowledge
that rampant dental decay is often a red-flag . . . indicating something is very
wrong with your general health. Aside from malnutrition, the most common
systemic problems that make teeth susceptible to dental decay include
digestion/gut health, blood sugar issues, problems with energy metabolism and
hormonal imbalances. Also the use of antibiotics, laxatives, fat substitutes,
cholesterol lowering drugs all wreak havoc with proper mineralization of tooth and
bone.

If you feel you may have any of these issues, start the anti-cavity diet and consult
with a good natural medicine physician who can help you get back in balance.

About Dr. Curt Eastin

Curt Eastin is a unique health care practitioner. With doctorate degrees in both

Over the course of his career, Dr. Eastin has seen the devastating effects that the
mercury from dental amalgam fillings can have on people's health. Since 1998, he
has dedicated his professional life to the practice of mercury-safe dentistry and
helping people with safe and effective mercury detoxification protocols.

Currently, he maintains a private practice in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. His next big
