Apartheid
The word apartheid was an Afrikaner word meaning separated. Black people and white people could not go to the same schools, eat in the same restaurants or live in the same parts of city. They could not work together and if they were ill, they had to go to separated hospitals.

Apartheid
Apartheid was a system of government in South Africa. It was only abolished in 1994.

Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was born on July 18th in 1918. Nelson went to college and became a lawyer. He helped black people with their legal problems. He founded the African National Congress (ANC) to protest about the apartheid. In 1964 Mandela was arrested. He was the worlds most famous political prisoner.

Nelson Mandela
In 1990, President de Klerk of South Africa ordered to free Mandela. In 1993 Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1994 Nelson Mandela became the first black African President of South Africa.
