Diante deles o hipdromo elevava-se suavemente em colina,
parecendo, depois, da poeirada quente da calada e das cruas reverberaes
da cal, mais fresco, mais vasto, com a sua relva j pouco crestada pelo sol de
Junho, e uma ou outra papoula vermelhejando aqui e alm. Uma aragem
larga e repousante, chegava vagarosamente do rio.
No centro, como perdido no largo espao verde, negrejava, no brilho do
sol, um magote apertado de gente, com algumas carruagens pelo meio,
donde sobressaam tons claros de sombrinhas, o faiscar de um vidro de
lanterna, ou um casaco branco de cocheiro. Para alm, dos dois lados da
tribuna real forrada de um baeto vermelho de mesa de repartio, erguiamse as duas tribunas pblicas, com o feitio de traves mal pregadas, como
palanques de arraial. A da esquerda, vazia, por pintar, mostrava luz as
fendas do tabuado. Na da direita, besuntada por fora de azul-claro, havia uma
fila de senhoras quase todas de escuro encostadas ao rebordo, outras
espalhadas pelos primeiros degraus; e o resto das bancadas permanecia
deserto e desconsolado, de um tom alvadio de madeira, que abafava as cores
alegres dos raros vestidos de Vero. Por vezes a brisa lenta agitava no alto
dos dois mastros o azul das bandeirolas. Um grande silncio caa do cu
faiscante.
Em volta do recinto da tribuna, fechado por um tapume de madeira,
havia soldados de infantaria, com as baionetas lampejando ao sol. E no
homem triste que estava entrada, recebendo os bilhetes, metido dentro de
um enorme colete branco, reteso de goma, e que lhe chegava at aos joelhos
Carlos reconheceu o servente do seu laboratrio. ()
No recinto em declive, entre a tribuna e a pista, havia s homens, a
gente do Grmio, das secretarias e da Casa Havanesa; a maior parte
vontade, com jaquetes claros, e de chapu-coco; outros mais em estilo, de
sobrecasaca e binculo a tiracolo, pareciam embaraados e quase
arrependidos do seu chique. Falava-se muito baixo, com passos lentos pela
relva, entre leves fumaraas de cigarro. Aqui e alm um cavalheiro, parado,
de mos atrs das costas, pasmava languidamente para as senhoras. Ao lado
de Carlos dois brasileiros queixavam-se do preo dos bilhetes, achando aquilo
uma sensaboria de rachar.
Defronte a pista estava deserta, com a relva pisada, guardada por
soldados: e junto corda, do outro lado, apinhava-se o magote de gente, com
as carruagens pelo meio, sem um rumor, numa pasmaceira tristonha, sob o
peso do sol de Junho. Um rapazote com uma voz dolente, apregoava gua
fresca. L ao fundo o largo Tejo faiscava, todo azul, to azul como o cu,
numa pulverizao fina de luz. ()
Os outros voltaram-se. Era o Sequeira, com a face como um pimento,
entalado numa sobrecasaca curta que o fazia mais atarracado, de chapu
branco sobre o olho e grande o chicote debaixo do brao.
Aceitou um copo de champanhe e teve muito prazer em conhecer o Sr.
Clifford
- E que me diz voc a esta sensaboria? exclamou ele logo, voltandose para Carlos.

Enquanto a si, estava contente, pulava Aquela corrida inspida, sem


cavalos, sem jqueis, com meia dzia de pessoas a bocejar em roda, dava-lhe
a certeza que eram talvez as ltimas e que o Jockey Club rebentava E ainda
bem! Via-se a gente livre de um divertimento que no estava nos hbitos do
Pas. Corridas era para se apostar. Tinha-se apostado>? No? Ento histrias!
Em Inglaterra e em Frana, sim! A eram um jogo como a roleta, ou como o
monte At havia banqueiros, que eram bookmakers Ento j viam!

II ACTIVIDADE DE EXPRESSO ESCRITA (50 pontos)


O romance Os Maias denuncia os vcios da ptria para a qual Ea de
Queirs olhava do exterior. De facto, o afastamento de Portugal, por
razes profissionais, possibilitava-lhe realizar a anlise objectiva, por
vezes impiedosa, de uma sociedade ridcula, decadente, to distanciada
da civilizao estrangeira que ele to bem conhecia. Ea critica, ironiza,
satiriza e deforma em excesso vrios traos caracterizadores do pas,
exprimindo, deste modo, a necessidade urgente de reformar os hbitos, os
costumes e sobretudo as mentalidades de uma gente to tacanha, to
ridcula
