Present Perfect Characteristics

To tell the activity lasting for a while since the past up till the present time. To ask for something you may not make sure if it is completely finished or even done yet. The activity referred in form of present perfect tend to prolong to the approaching future.

Use of Present Perfect

Lets study the diagram below: I have studied English since 1990. I have studied English for 21 years.

X1 ------------> X2 -----------> X3
When X1 represents 1990 (the past) X2 represents 2011 (the present) X3 represents future time ***It is to say the studying of English hereby started already since 1990 and should continue to the future.***

Key Word Since and For Since --> Used to give the specific period of time e.g. since 1990, since last Friday, etc. For --> Used to give the amounts of time e.g. for 21 years.
