Lesson Plan Template EDTECH 541 Your Name: Casey Farmer Lesson Title: Clay boats and buoyancy

Introduction: Students will build clay boats that should be able to hold paperclips and displace water for 30 seconds. Content Area and Grade or Age Level of Students: Middle School Science Objectives: Students will understand why certain shapes are capable of holding more water by utilizing Microsoft Excel. Students will input data (weight of clay, shape, paperclips held) this will allow them to compare their data with other students to find out which group held the most, and what shapes held the most paperclips. Standards Addressed:

Competency Goal 3: The learner will conduct investigations and utilize appropriate technologies and information systems to build an understanding of the hydrosphere.

3.01 Analyze the unique properties of water including:

Universal solvent. Cohesion and adhesion. Polarity. Density and buoyancy. Specific heat.

Relative Advantage: Students will experience hand on activities with buoyancy. Students will also learn how to utilize Microsoft Excel. Timeline: 2 classes Materials: Clay Laptops Paperclips Grouping Strategies: Each student will be in a group of 3 based on pre-assessment, they will one laptop per group and each group will have 6 ounces of clay they will then complete assignment. Learning Activities: Students will begin by collecting 6 ounces of clay. They will then begin discussing possible shapes. Once they form their shape they must place the boat and water. The teacher will begin putting paperclips in the boat. Students will then take their data and put it into their Microsoft Excel worksheet. The heading will be Shape/Design Weight in ounces Results/Number of paperclips

Assessment: Students will have to explain why certain shapes held more paperclips
