Question Tag Function

Question tag has two main objectives: to streng then the information and are expected to ask for information that is not expected. Both of these goals can be distinguished by the tone of speech that we use.

Question Tag Pattern

Positive Statement
Positive Tag: MODAL VERB + SUBJECT ?

Negative Statement
Negative Tag: MODAL VERB + NOT + SUBJECT ?

1. Positive Statement
Positive Tag: MODAL VERB + SUBJECT ?

Example : This is my book, isnt it ? The students have finished it, havent they ? Everybody made a mistake, didnt they ? Something is wrong with you, isnt it ? He will play tennis, wont he ?

2. Negative Statement
Negative Tag: MODAL + NOT + SUBJECT ?

Example : This isnt my book, is it ? The students havent finished it, have they ? Everybody didnt made a mistake, did they ? Something isnt wrong with you, is it ? He wont play tennis, will he ?

3. Command / Request
Verb1/be + object/compl, + quest tag Dont + Verb1/be + object/compl, + quest tag

Example : Close the door, please, wont you ? Help me, please, would you ? Stop over there, will you ? Lets go swimming, shall we ?

Answer for the question tag

Yes, + Subject + to be (untuk membenarkan) No, + Subject + to be + not (untuk menyangkal)

The question tag added at the end of nominal sentence She is a is a good swimmer, isnt she? The team are sportive enough, arent they?

you are doing the work so good, arent you?

3. QUESTION TAG IN MODAL

Modal verbs consists of can, may, will, shall,must, should etc.

He will play tennis, wont he ? The lady cant sew a dress, can she ? He should take a rest, shouldnt he? The question tag in modal form

Intonation
A question tag with a falling intonation is a way of making conversation by asking the listener to agree with the speaker: Its a lovely day, isnt it?

A question tag with a rising intonation means that the speaker is asking for confirmation: Shed like to meet him, wouldnt she?
