Undergraduate Programs Fashion Merchandising


Fashion Merchandising The Fashion Merchandising program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the fashion industry, including the design, production, evaluation, buying, marketing, distribution, consumption, conservation, and recycling of textiles, clothing, accessories, and home furnishings within the United States and abroad. An interdisciplinary approach helps students to develop theoretical, practical, and critical competencies necessary for personal and professional growth and success. Students may also choose a complimentary minor in subject areas such as business, foreign language, or communication, depending on their career goals and interests in the global fashion industry. Upon completion of the program, students will be fully equipped for a variety of positions in the industry with special attention to merchandising and management. Introduction to the Fashion Industry. 3 credits An overview of the fashion industry, including the design, production, evaluation, distribution, marketing, consumption, conservation, and discarding of textiles, clothing, accessories, and home furnishings within the United States and abroad and related careers. Required for majors and minors. FASH 006. Visual Merchandising. 3 credits An overview of visual merchandising, including a discussion of the principles and practices that guide the creation of window and promotional displays, store layout and design, and their impact on the fashion industry. FASH 009. Fashion Studio I. 3 credits An introduction to sewing including basic clothing construction, pattern analysis, and clothing evaluation, while developing an understanding of terminology and tools. FASH 102. African American Dress. 3 credits An introduction to the social, economic, cultural, geographical, historical and political forces which have impacted the decisions of African Americans in the United States with respect to clothing and appearance(s). Prerequisite(s): Two courses in psychology, sociology, or anthropology. FULFILLS THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CLUSTER REQUIREMENT. Required for majors. FASH 124. Introduction to Textiles. 3 credits A survey course which provides an understanding of textile materials and manufacturing techniques for various textile products from raw materials. Required for majors and minors.

FASH 162. Fashion Studio II. 3 credits An applied design course that applies art principles to the design of clothing using techniques of flat-pattern drafting and draping. Prerequisite(s): FASH 009. FASH 163. Fashion Illustration I. 3 credits An introduction to the basic principles of drawing for the fashion industry, focusing on basic fashion figure features and proportions, croquis development, rendering techniques for garment and accessory details, and portfolio development. Required for majors. FASH 164. Fashion Illustration II. 3 credits A continuation of FASH 163, with integration of computer illustration techniques and advanced portfolio development. Prerequisite(s): FASH 163. FASH 165. Directed Readings Honors. 3 credits A supervised opportunity for independent study through supervised readings, leading to the completion of an undergraduate research project. Prerequisite(s): Consent of instructor. FASH 166. Directed Readings I. 1 credit A supervised opportunity for independent study through supervised readings, leading to the completion of an undergraduate research project. Prerequisite(s): Consent of instructor. FASH 167. Directed Readings II. 1 credit A continuation of FASH 166 which allows for further supervised independent study through supervised readings, leading to the completion of an undergraduate research project. Prerequisite(s): Consent of instructor. FASH 168. Practicum in Fashion Retailing. 3 credits The application and observation of business practices in an apparel retail environment in the Washington, D.C. area for a minimum of one hundred (100) hours. Prerequisite(s): Majors only. Completion of forty (40) credits from the four-year sequence in fashion including a minimum of four (4) FASH courses in sequence and consent of instructor. Student must be in good standing and must have completed all necessary CAR courses. FASH 169. Field Experience. 6 credits Supervised internship or work experience in a commercial, non-profit, or governmental agency related to fashion for a minimum of two hundred (200) hours. Prerequisite(s): Majors only, senior status, and consent of instructor. Student must be in good standing. Required for majors. FASH 172. Fashion Studio III. 3 credits An applied design course that offers a continuation of FASH 162, with an emphasis on developing a line. Prerequisite(s): FASH 162.

FASH 174. Fashion Industry II. 3 credits A continuation of FASH 004 with emphasis on fashion styling, forecasting, and trend analysis. Prerequisite(s): FASH 004. FASH 175. Fashion Buying & Merchandising. 3 credits A survey of fundamental activities, operations, and practices in retailing, including theory and quantitative analysis of inventory, planning, pricing, markdowns, and control for the profitable management of retail environments. Prerequisite(s): FASH 004 and MATH 006. FASH 176. Fashion in Context. 3 credits A discussion of current topics of interest in the fashion industry. Prerequisite(s): FASH 004, FASH 186, or instructor consent. FASH 182. Textile Design. 3 credits Examines the structural and decorative design of textiles. Laboratory includes such techniques as weaving, knitting, crocheting, and printing. Prerequisite: FASH 124. FASH 183. Fashion Studio IV: AUTOCAD for the Apparel Industry. 3 credits An overview of the role of and use of computer aided design for pattern making, grading, detailing, marker layout, drafting, and surface design. (Formerly Computers in the Fashion Industry) Prerequisite(s): FASH 009, FASH 162, FASH 172, & ARTE 080. FASH 184. Historic Textiles. 3 credits The study of ancient and occidental histories of textiles, including weaving, dyeing, and designing in historic times. Prerequisite(s): FASH 124. FASH 185. Traditional Textiles & Dress. 3 credits An introduction to world textiles and dress including an understanding of material and techniques associated with traditional design around the world. Prerequisite(s): FASH 124. FASH 186. Clothing in History. 3 credits A global survey of clothing from 3000 B.C. to present-day, including an analysis of historical clothing design and contemporary trends in clothing. Required for majors and minors. FASH 187. Clothing and Human Behavior. 3 credits An interdisciplinary study of the aesthetic, cultural, economic, geographical, historic, political, psychological, social, and technological aspects of clothing and their influences on decisions concerning clothing and human behavior. Prerequisite(s): FASH 004 and one course in psychology or sociology. FASH 188. Current Clothing Topics. 3 credits A discussion of current topics of interest in the fashion and clothing field. Prerequisite(s): FASH 004, FASH 124, or instructor consent. FASH 189. International Trade in Textiles and Apparel. 3 credits. A survey of the organization and role of the apparel and textile industry in the global marketplace,

with an emphasis on the production, marketing, distribution, consumption, and discarding of textiles, apparel and related items and the trade, humanitarian, and ecological policies which govern these actions. Prerequisite(s): FASH 004, ECON 001, ECON 002, or instructor consent. FASH 190. Special Projects in Fashion I. 3 credits An advanced course that allows students to explore fashion-related topics of interest in-depth under the supervision of a Fashion Merchandising faculty member. Prerequisite(s): Junior or senior status and consent of instructor. Student must be in good standing. FASH 191. Special Projects in Fashion II. 3 credits An advanced course that allows students to explore fashion-related topics of interest in-depth under the supervision of a Fashion Merchandising faculty member. Prerequisite(s): Junior or senior status and consent of instructor. Student must be in good standing. FASH 192. Current Textile Topics. 3 credits A discussion of current topics of interest in the area of textiles. Prerequisite(s): FASH 004, FASH 124, or instructor consent. FASH 193. Fashion Marketing. 3 credits An introduction and analysis of the activities that promote fashion-related goods and services in the merchandising environment, including brand development, marketing communications, and event planning. Prerequisite(s): FASH 004. FASH 194. Fashion Seminar. 3 credits A discussion of current topics of interest in the fashion and clothing field. Prerequisite(s): Instructor consent. FASH 195. Fashion, Art, & Media Design. 3 credits An in-depth look at the role of how the fashion and art influence the design of various forms of media. Prerequisite(s): FASH 004, FASH 187, & FASH 193. FASH 196. Sustainability in the Fashion Industry. 3 credits An introduction to the development of sustainable products and practices for fashion and interiors goods, their impact on consumers in the global marketplace, and the greening of the fashion and interiors industries. Prerequisite(s): FASH 124. Required for majors. FASH 197. Fashion Entrepreneurship. 3 credits An exploration in the conceptualization and development of a fashion-related business through the creation of a comprehensive business plan and participation in related entrepreneurial activities. Prerequisite(s): FASH 004, FASH 175, FASH 193, or instructor consent. FASH 198. Study Travel Tour. 1-3 credits. An opportunity to receive academic credit for Fashion Merchandising Program-sponsored, international and domestic travel/learning experiences and related pre- and post- activities. Destinations vary.
