TRULY A YEAR OF GRACE AND A NEW PENTECOST, the 100th foundation anniversary of the St. Anthony of Padua Parish provided an opportune venue to rediscover the shining verities of hard work, sacrifice, kindness and generosity that are so characteristic of the genuine Cabugaonon. Soon after the launching of the centennial celebrations, persons from every strata of society expressed their ardent desire to be part of the exciting task of building the parish and its people both in the material and spiritual spheres. On 6 July 2011, barely six (6) days after the new pastor assumed the reins of the parish, a whole-day Parish Pastoral Planning was held at the formation center to chart the direction of Cabugao for the next five (5) years and beyond. The gathering gave birth to a pastoral program that revolves around the WESTYN (Worship-Education-Services-Temporalities-Youth-New Evangelization) strategy. Following is a cursory review of the program, a progress report on its implementation, and notes on its future agenda. In WORSHIP, efforts had been exerted to make the Cabugao Church a more conducive place of worship. Liturgical updates for all liturgical ministers, namely the lay Eucharistic ministers, the lectors/ commentators, the altar servers, the choir and the much-desired offertory ministers are held every last Sunday of the month. The Holy Mass is celebrated daily, including Mondays --- rest day of priests, with homily/ sermon; confession is available thirty (30) minutes before the Mass every Sunday. Traditional devotions e.g. San Roque fiesta/ novena, La Naval penitential procession, and the Corpus Christi/ Cristo Rey Eucharistic procession, have been revived while the Angelus had been launched as a 6 oclock daily habit, and the Block Rosary (Visita Domiciliaria) is now held houseto-house. Last November, a special Centennial Mass was held for Manila-based Cabugaonons. Organized through the wise initiative of Mr. Ramon Tayas, it was made possible through the generous hospitality of Mr. & Mrs. Herminio Enriquez who hosted the gathering at their family resort in Paranaque. The day after, a Holy Mass was offered at the residence of the Tariman family at Filinvest, Quezon City to launch the house-to-house pilgrimage of the image of San Antonio in the metropolis. We also held Masses pro Defunctis at the parish cemetery during the first nine (9) days of November. We have also added color, if not meaning and significance, to the Advent and Christmas liturgies, including the traditional Cagharong on Christmas eve. We have also tried to make the Lenten celebrations, Holy Week and Easter season rituals more solemn, reflective and meaningful. In EDUCATION, the parish catechists are given monthly updates to make them better prepared for classroom instructions. The Marian Formation Center, now housed at the back of the church, continues to operate under the supervision of the Daughters of Mary (DM) Sisters. We now have a team of pre-marriage counselors composed of Mrs. Paz R. Teves, Engr. & Mrs. Pacifico Sorreta Jr., and Mr. & Mrs. Rogelio Rodriguez, Jr. The parish monthly bulletin Fuego is also published regularly and given free of charge to serve as a tool of information to the faithful. The bulletin also appears in its entirety at the facebook page of the parish, Fuego de Cabugao.

In SERVICES, the parish had initiated its advocacy for environmental care and protection with the launching of the Centennial Tree Planting last 9 October. With the full support of the barangay councils of BIMASANCA, a total of 300 boton-boton trees had been planted along the coast of Cabugao Bay. Another round of similar activity

was also done last 11 November in support of the 11-11-11 Tree Planting Drive of the congressman of Catanduanes. The parish is also a member of the Convergence Team of the DOLE-assisted ABACATANDUANES, an abaca industry manned by the Bato Womens Association. Though not yet fully implemented, it is the task of the parish to provide spiritual/ moral formation to its members and beneficiaries. In TEMPORALITIES, the parish espouses transparency in all financial matters. All incomes are issued official receipts and disbursements supported by pertinent documents. Financial reports are duly accomplished and published at the parish bulletin, with a copy submitted to the Chancery of the diocese. A table of Mass offerings is prominently displayed inside the church. For the YOUTH, a Campus Ministry had been organized at the Cabugao Integrated School while the Parish Youth Movement (PYM) takes charge of out-of-school youths. Last 31 October, we sent a 104-strong youth contingent as participants in the Youth Pilgrimage/ Vigil of the Vicariate of Virac which started at the Virac Cathedral and culminated at the Assumpta Chapel in Calatagan. On that occasion, we took pride in being awarded as The Biggest Delegation and with most active participation. On 19 November, a team-building fellowship was held for all parish youth leaders. Graduating high school students had the chance to undergo the Youth Encounter (YE) program in Virac last 2-4 December. Members of the Altar Knights Ministry had been enrolled to the Pontifical Society of the Holy Childhood for their spiritual formation. The Youth Festival last 2630 December 2011 was also a wonderful display of the exuberant artistic prowess of our ever-talented young people from generation to generation. It celebrated in a most eloquent way the undying vigor of the Parish Youth Movement, now under the able leadership of Allan Diaz, even after two decades of uninterrupted existence. In terms of the NEW EVANGELIZATION, the main pastoral thrust of the diocese, the parish had witnessed, once again, the birth of a Basic Faith Community (BFC) in the Neo-Catechumenal Way. Catechists from the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish composed of: Felix and Rita Vargas, Anselmo and Anita Vargas, Jose and Teresita Suarez, Florencio and Melinda Aries, and Wilfredo and Nellie Torrecampo came to conduct the NeoCatechumenal Evangelization, with the Cabugao pastor serving as presbyter. We now have a community of 33 members under the prudent care of Fernando and Grace Molina as first responsibles. A Christian Life Program conducted shortly thereafter also gave birth to new members of the Couples for Christ and Youth for Christ in the parish. Please note that all other programs of the parish are considered pre-evangelization strategies aimed at inviting people to a more serious post-baptismal Christian faith formation like the neo-catechumenate. THE PARISH CHURCH. Considering the present state of the Cabugao church building, and given the unfailing generosity of the parishioners of Cabugao, whose industry had been crowned with success in their various fields of endeavor, the parish had, so far, accomplished the following projects: 1. REHABILITATION OF THE ROOF. The GI roofing of both the church and the formation center had been coated with fresh paint to prevent the rapid-formation of rusts while in some areas, particularly in the altar area, several GI sheets were totally replaced due to corrosion. Constructing a concrete gutter around it will, in the future, make it more resistant to typhoons. 2. IMPROVEMENT OF THE FLOOR. The red cement flooring of the nave, the crazy-cut marbles at the center aisle and the marble floor of the sanctuary had been replaced with synthetic granite tiles, the floor level previously prone to flooding had been remedied. Engr. & Mrs. Carlito T. Tariman generously shared their time and resources for its completion. Their boundless kindness to the parish is simply a continuation of a family tradition that is expressive of their fond devotion to San Antonio who loved the Church unconditionally.

3. REPAINTING OF THE CHURCH. Prior to the opening of the centennial year celebrations, the church and formation center were repainted inside and outside. Still, we plan to repaint the false beams of the church ceiling, made of synthetic narra plywood, with a lighter shade, to improve the luminance of the church interior and help betray its diminutive size, complimentary with the newly-installed floor tiles. 4. REHABILITATION OF THE PRIESTS QUARTERS. Though unplanned and not among the immediate priorities of the parish, the priests quarters, which were inhabitable for the past six (6) years after its was unroofed by typhoon Reming on 30 November 2006, had been renovated and now serves as study room and sleeping quarters of the parish priest. Consequently, the area temporarily used as priests quarters is back to its being a receiving area of the parish rectory. Cabugaonon businesswoman Felina R. Co magnanimously gave her generous allout assistance for its realization. Members of the parish choir 2 also gave their full support. Educator and former Cabugao barangay chair Dr. Nenita Tayas-Taraya and family boundlessly offered and gave their assistance. Architect Rodulfo Y. Leonardo, who had always been so kindly-disposed to the Church, offered his time and expertise for its planning and implementation. Countless others gave their share, in cash and in kind, in order to make the project possible. 5. IMPROVEMENT OF THE PARISH RECTORY. The rectory, more popularly called convento, had also been improved, and its kitchen and cooking area made more presentable. Engr. Billy and Joy Tariman took the benevolent initiative to make it possible. They also voluntarily refurbished the altar table with the support of Mr. & Mrs. Romeo Ongoco and family. 6. NEW EQUIPMENT. The parish church is now equipped with a modern digital projector which has greatly enhanced the celebration of the liturgy and other parish activities. It is a love offering of Mr. & Mrs. Eulogio P. Rodriguez Jr., a very successful certified public accountant of an international pharmaceutical company. They also financed the painting of the priests quarters. All these endeavors would not have been possible without the support of the whole parish community led by the Parish Pastoral Council chaired by Mrs. Paz R. Teves, and the Cabugao Centennial Steering Committee led by Mr. Miguelito T. Rodriguez, the various religious associations of the parish, and civic groups of Cabugaonons here and abroad. Most of all, we duly acknowledge the heroic hard work and almost legendary kindness and generosity of Ms. Leoncia P. Tito, the indefatigable support of Ms. Juana Rodriguez and Ms. Angelina Traquena, and the highly encouraging inspiration of Mrs. Portia Rodriguez and Mr. Ruben Tapit. With these initial achievements, to which the parish priest claims no merit whatsoever inasmuch as they were made possible through the pure initiative and unsolicited, voluntary offerings of the faithful, the parish continues to dream the following dreams: 1. CONSTRUCTION OF A PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION (PEA) CHAPEL. The Holy Eucharist, the sacrament of Gods unfathomable love, must be given a special place that is easily accessible to the faithful, especially those with a weary soul, who wish to adore and seek strength from the Eucharistic Lord any time. Hence, construction of the PEA Chapel lies on top of the priorities of the parish. Any excess fund coming from the publication of this centennial book will be allocated for this rather important project.

2. INSTALLATION OF A RELIABLE SOUND SYSTEM. We have requested the BOSE Company for a price

quotation of a sound system fit for the Cabugao Church. A discounted price of PhP 130,000.oo was proposed for 2 main speakers, music monitor, powered mixer, power amplifier, microphones and stand, horn speaker, AVR, labor cost and other materials all of which are covered by a five-year warranty. We consider this as a major priority given our worn-out and defective sound system. 3. INSTALLATION OF A RETABLO ALTAR. Ecclesiastical art demands that altars must inspire reverence and elicit awe among the worshippers. A retablo incorporated with the existing semi-modern altar, will definitely enhance the faith experience and celebrations of worship of the faithful. Old photos show an antique retablo in the Cabugao sanctuary in earlier times. 4. IMPROVEMENT OF THE CHURCH FAADE AND PATIO. We refer to the Church as a mother. Hence, the motherly elements of a welcoming and homely atmosphere, a caring and gentle presence in the midst of the community must be depicted in the church faade and environs. A design for the proposed improvements incorporates additional decorative columns on the faade. Photos of the old church also show similar features. Hence, the proposed improvement is meant to be an attempt to bring back the grandeur of the original edifice. 5. CONSTRUCTION OF A CRUCERO. With the ever-increasing number of parishioners, the floor area of the church may be expanded by adding a crucero near the sanctuary, i.e. putting right and left arms to the existing structure, making it cross-shaped. 6. IMPROVEMENT OF THE CEMETERY. The parish cemetery is now congested with a disarray of tombs, with its chapel in a dismally pitiful state. Depending on the availability of funds and space, the parish dreams of putting up ossuaries and condo-type tombs at the sides of the cemetery which will also serve as its perimeter fence. After five (5) years, remains will be automatically transferred from the tomb to the ossuary. AN APPEAL. While it is true that the Church per se is not the building but the community of believers, it mirrors mans faith to God. Building the church is an act of faith, an expression of love to the Almighty. A neglected edifice of worship can never speak well of a community no matter how alive its liturgies may be. If we as men know how to appropriate what is best for us, why could we not do the same to the temple we dedicate to God, the Author of Life, from whom all blessings flow? The PARISH RENOVATION PROJECT, therefore, is envisioned to be an EXCLUSIVELY CABUGAONON enterprise. By this, it is meant that DONATIONS or PLEDGES OF DONATIONS will be solicited and accepted only from persons, local and abroad, who were born in the parish, i.e. Binanuahan, Marinawa, San Andres and Cabugao, or those whose family traces its roots to the area. Donations may be given in full or in installments within a one-year period. The donor shall determine the frequency and date of remittance of his donation. Hence, the progress and completion of the projects shall depend on the ready availability of funds as warranted by the generosity of Cabugaonons. A minimum donation of PhP 10,000.oo entitles a donor to have his name inscribed on a commemorative Plaque of Gratitude at the right wing of the church, beside the Diocesan Vision/ Mission. Donations are classified as follows: PhP 10,000.oo --- BRONZE; PhP 20,000.oo --- SILVER; PhP 30,000.oo --- GOLD; and PhP 50,000.oo --- DIAMOND. Other amounts, even donations in kind, are most welcome. We have now the following PLEDGES: Engr. & Mrs. Carlito Tariman; Mr. & Mrs. Sergio P. May I now say some words about myself. I was born in Pandan, but last July 1, the day after I celebrated my 40th birthday, I became a Cabugaonon. The Most Rev. Bishop of Virac, Manolo A. de los Santos, with his unfailing pastoral solicitude for Cabugao and its people, installed my humble person as the 50th pastor of the parish. I consider it to be divinely inspired, if not an altogether act of divine intervention, for that day also happened to be the Feast of the Sacred Heart and the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests. And I am simply and gratefully happy that after 14 years of more burdensome ministry in Virac, my last assignment where I stayed for more than 10 years, 2 years in Bato, and another 2 years as rector of the seminary in Virac, I am in Cabugao --- a place like no other, as Fr. Lizaso, our well-loved pastor for the last nine (9) years, would say, Walang katulad ang Cabugao! I stated with much emphasis that our dream-projects are envisioned as a PURELY CABUGAONON enterprise. Priests come and go. In a year or two or five, I will be leaving for yet another experience of priestly ministry. I will be leaving the way I came to Cabugao: nag-abot sa Cabugao na daing imo, mahale ako sa Cabugao na dai nin imo. Siring na nag-abot ako sa Virac na daing imo asin naghale man na dai. My only consolation would be, God willing, that on this rare occasion of the 100th year of Cabugao --- which the Lord had so kindly allowed us to celebrate, the Cabugaonons of today, inheritors of a past immortalized by the industry and faith of its forebears, have built an edifice of faith and love to God, gibo kan kamot asin kahigosan kan Cabugaonon, which all generations to come would be proud to cherish. This is my prayer to God and to San Antonio. May this also be your prayer and solemn commitment to God. On this note, let us all bow humbly to God and RENEW OUR PLEDGE OF FAITH TO HIM. Ang presenteng generasyon dai lamang maka-arog sa naka-agi! Comparison! Comparison! Comparison! This is a whole lot different and very far our common expectation when one speaks of the future. A complex, bright and colorful standpoint of the future is what we would usually think of. Yet indeed, this has always been the cry of the present day folks as their sign of dismay and regret to what the world has become now. The what and the how we have become, remains to be a question. On which, the battle between the supremacy of the past and the future has never reached a clear ground. How true therefore, is the common impression that todays age is leading herself to a grave moral decline, thus to a worsening future? There is indeed a very visible difference between the past and the present and much more with the forthcoming. The simple way of life the past portrayed is far different to todays complicated lifestyle. With the challenge of espousing to the needs of the present time especially in terms of technological advances, our present world indeed has clothed differently and put herself into a complete make-over. It seems to have set aside the cultures of the past and left all its traces behind. The morally unacceptable standards of the past seem to suit todays moral limits. Consumerism has engulfed the minds of the young. The church remains to be in her constant battle against the evil destroying the sanctity of life. What remains unchanged is the culture of degeneration. As these may appear factual, nonetheless, it speaks and calls for a moral reform and conversion. As the Parish of Saint Anthony of Padua, Cabugao, celebrates its 100th year of existence, it is of a very significant time to look back to the past, rethink the present and hope for the future. Cabugao being a progressive barangay is not spared from the elements of complex change, thus, risking herself to forfeit the future. The parishs projects and programs if properly planned and implemented will cater to a bright future with a Christ centered and matured Christians living harmoniously with each other. There is a need to respond to the call to the unity of the mind and heart. The future henceforth, is a clear manifestation of what the present does.
