Neuter demonstrative pronouns: isto, isso aquilo

Note: Use these words when no specific noun is being referred to.

Grammar and structure A.

The Portuguese Indefinite Article um, uma, uns, umas ( a, an, some)

The indefinite article agrees with its noun in both gender and number. In English we have a (an), but in Portuguese we find um (masc singular.) or uma (fem. singular). um livro(masc.) uma caneta(fem.) um homem(masc.) uma mulher(fem.) a book a pen man a woman

Note also the plural forms uns, umas, which translates some / any in the sense of a certain number or a certain quantity or not translated at all: Uns amigos meus. Umas mulheres bonitas. Uns filmes bons. Umas camisas novas. some friends of mine. some pretty women. some good movies. some new shirts.

B.

Posso + Infinitivo? (can /may I + bare infinitive). Use this expression to ask for permission to do something: Posso fumar aqui? Posso fazer-lhe um pergunta?Posso sair mais cedo hoje? Can /may I smoke here, please? Can / May I ask you a question? May I leave early today?

C.

Neuter demonstrative pronouns: isto, isso, aquilo

isto isso aquilo this thing / idea (near the speaker / on the mind of the speaker) that thing / idea (near the person spoken to / on the mind of the speaker) that thing / idea (far from both the speaker and the person addressed/ on the mind of the speaker)

Note: a)

Isto, isso, aquilo (this, that) are used in place of nouns, when the gender of the noun is not known or indeterminate or to refer to some idea, or something already mentioned.

b)

These words should never be used when referring to people. Isso no verdade. Isto um livro. Isso o que ele quer. Aquilo um computador. Thats not true. This is a book. Thats what he wants. Thats a computer.

Sometimes isto/isso/aquilo can be used with a plural verb and plural noun: Isto so livros. Isso so disquetes Aquilo so carros. These are books. Those are diskettes Those are cars.

c)

Sometimes the words aqui, a and ali are used together with isto, isso aquilo to emphasize nearness or distance: O que isto aqui?(near the person speaking) O que isso a?(near the person you are talking to) O que aquilo ali?(in the distance; far from all speakers)
