It is indeed a great opportunity to be writing you these starting lines. By the means of this e-newsletter, members of JCI City Plus are able to voice their feelings, opinions and share their experience on the various projects realised. It is also a good reference for new aspiring members who can know what has been happening in the organisation, learn about the types of projects and get to know the members of JCI City Plus. It is without doubt the team spirit, bonding and the will to contribute to the positive development of society which will keep the desire of our JCI members high. What has not been taught in schools, universities, work is being lived and experienced in JCI. This will surely help to motivate more new members to join in and contribute to their own individual development as well as bring positive change to the society. I wish you all a pleasant reading and hope that you enjoy the new design, which gives your e-newsletter a more dynamic and innovative layout. MESSAGE

Dear JCI Friends,

Our aim is to prepare members to be future JCI leaders and inculcate active citizenship towards bringing better lives around us...

I am delighted to address you as the 2012 JCI City Plus President in this first edition of our e-newsletter for the year. 2012: A year full of challenges for our organization, as the world itself is facing tremendous challenges to safeguard environment, uphold peace, fight against extreme poverty, eradicate dreadful diseases, promote good governance and democracy across nations and above all, cope with the global economic crisis. These are only the overview of the issues which, if each citizen addresses as an individual responsibility, we shall be able to overcome the hurdles and make a better place for the world to live in. These are the issues, which we JCI members, as active citizens, take interest and work collectively in our respective communities to bring positive change. In our country, since 2008, JCI City Plus members are striving to creating a positive change in our society. 5 years already that we are working towards a better future. Guided by our slogan for this year Lead by Excellence, we look forward to give the best of ourselves, inspire others and face new challenges, based on our constant evolution built on since 2008 and prepare ourselves for the coming years. I believe that, with our members, we have brought up a strong goodwill, which is the pride of our organisation and which will bring us to higher horizons. My ideology while to Lead by Excellence is to groom our members to be future JCI leaders on local and international scene; to inculcate active citizenship; to deliver innovative projects that will bring positive change; to strengthen our bonding and friendship; to enhance individual development; to be the Leaders of tomorrow in our jobs; and to have better prospect in our career. It is the gradual progress of doing small things better, be passionate in what we do, which will sustain this ideology. I firmly believe that our actions shall impact our country and the world by promoting active citizenship trough innovative projects, teamwork, friendship, dedication and passion. As the 5th President, my vision towards excellence will be that JCI City Plus shall continue to grow as a professional organization, lead by example and fulfill the goals to promoting active citizenship and bringing positive change in our community. I believe that, YOU, Members are the pride of our organization and would like YOU all to grow together with the organization. I will ensure that YOU are provided with the necessary development opportunities that will empower YOU to create this positive change. In this respect, one of our innovations this year will be the setting up of a JCI members career plan. My dear friends, I would like to seize this opportunity to thank you all: board members, commission directors, members, aspiring members, senators, advisors and partners for your constant support and for believing in our mission. Nothing would have been possible without you. Thank you so much! MESSAGE
Dear JCI City Plus lovers, 2011, Our Journey towards Excellence A Year, rapped in the completion of exceptional projects and trainings. The different activities provided opportunities for members and aspiring members to empower themselves and progress from Good to Great. And as young active citizens, the lads were eager and passionate about their JCI endeavour But the success of 2011 doesnt lie only on wonders but also on challenges and difficulties which helped us to learn, grow and strengthen our bonding as a unit. Trust, confidence, friendship and willingness of Members, Aspiring Members and Senators, helped JCI City Plus to ROCK. In a nut shell, 2011, JCI City Plus: 1. Ensured that opportunities are provided to JCI members to enable them to develop a career in JCI and beyond. 2. Operated projects aimed at building sustainable community development, for long term impact and create positive change amongst the participants and the community at large. 3. Ensured proper branding of JCI City Plus. 4. Fostered friendship and interaction amongst all chapters of Mauritius. 5. Involved all partners including sponsors and other stakeholders to support our actions. 6. Encouraged participation of JCI City Plus members and aspiring members in national projects and attending International Conferences. 7. Recruited 10 new members. 8. Ensured the welfare of members as they are the life line of this organization. I thank all my board members for their support and all the persons who believed in me in leading this organization to new heights. My sincere thanks to the other 2011 Chapter Presidents of JCI Beau Bassin Rose Hill, JCI Curepipe, JCI Port Louis and JCI Quatre Bornes who have always been supportive and participating in JCI City Plus Projects. I wish 2012 JCI City Plus team under the leadership of Vamen Poonoosamy to lead this organization by excellence and I am sure that we will climb to higher horizons. My fellow JCI friends, never let your passion for JCI fell asleep, keep yourself busy, participate actively in projects, talk about JCI, encourage your friends to join and discover the JCI world. As with JCI you will always be a winner, grab the opportunities, step on the leadership ladder and create positive change for a better tomorrow. 26 December 2011 For our last activity of the year 2011, Members and Aspiring Members of JCI City Plus embarked on a journey in the south west of the country, in Chamarel, to meet the children of this remote and deprived region to celebrate Christmas. We believe that every children has their own potential, creativity and dreams and consider that we must create occasions to give a smile to the underprivileged children. Christmas gifts and school materials were distributed to some 50 children living in this locality and fun animations were carried out during the day with face painting, songs from the children, story telling and entertaining games. This activity has been an excellent opportunity for members and aspiring members of JCI City Plus to discover the value in children and arise their interest in serving the children of disadvantaged communities. Children of today is the future of our country and we JCI members are happy that we have been able to bring a smile to them and provide them with the basic tools for education.

Open day
05 November 2011 - 4th edition of JCI City Plus Open day. One of our most awaited event of the year. This event was held with aim of regrouping children from various charitable institutions around the island and to provide them with an opportunity to discover and showcase their talents to the public. Children from APEIM, APDA, Anou Grandi, Cypres and Children Foundation took part in the activity. The days activities for the children consisted of a drawing and painting competition in addition to a dancing and singing programme. Lunch, refreshment and token gifts were offered to the children during the day. Furthermore, as part of the Open Days event, a free diabetes screening was offered to the public and a blood donation recruitment team was also set up. JCI City Plus organising committee comprised of Harsha Bundhoo (Project Director), Roumesh Oomah (Co-Project Director) and team members Usha Callikan, Shreya Ramma, Ashveena Mewa, Kavish Taukoordass, Kris Ramanah, Asha Auckloo and Varsha Padaruth. Special thanks to Yudhish Rama and Vamen Poonoosamy, 2011 and 2012 Presidents respectively, for their unfailing help, guidance and support. Thanks to MPCB for sponsoring the event and participating actively on D-Day. Our deepest appreciation also goes to the Mauritius Diabetic Association and Blood Donors Association for their participation. This event has enabled us to grow as individuals and active citizens of JCI City Plus. We succeeded in providing an insight to impact the Mauritian Public on the existence of JCI City Plus as an active citizenship organization and registered NGO, encouraged young people to be more receptive towards community service, increased awareness on diabetes, encouraged people to donate blood and save a life and to promote JCI City Plus through a recruitment program. Happiness comes from giving, not getting. If we try hard to bring happiness to others, we cannot stop it from coming to us also. To get joy, we must give it, and to keep joy, we must scatter it.- John Templeton

Art & Training Academy
Our 5th Art and Training Academy (ATA) residential workshop was held on the 7th and 8th April 2012 at the idyllic Domaine de LArbre du Voyageur, in peaceful chalets nestled in the middle of the forest at Mare Longue. Fight your fears residential workshop secured a full house for during that particular weekend with 24 participants from the different local chapters of Mauritius. This event has been a wonderful opportunity for members from diverse chapters to meet, learn and share their experiences. Our head coach for ATA was Senator Bruneau Woomed, who was of great support throughout the project. Saturday 7th April 2012 of the Fight your fears workshop consisted of several training sessions namely Fear of Speaking in Public by Senator Bruneau Woomed, Fear of Commitment by Mr. Vikash Ramsarah and Fear in the Workplace by Mr. Nandish Torul. The training sessions were very resourceful, interactive and fruitful. The facilitators met with enthusiastic participants and the trainings were lively animated from both sides. For a half day on Sunday 8th April 2012, the participants first had a warming up session by NS Yudhish, reminding them of their physical education classes at school and then team building activities at Le Domaine followed by a refreshing walk through the forest to Mare Longue reservoir where each team had to build a floating raft to support their respective team members. The atmosphere during the weekend was eclectic, full of sharing, learning, fun and friendly. Stay tuned for Part II of Fight your Fears, coming soon...

Initiation to Badminton
30 March 2012 As part of our individual development program, JCI City Plus provides various educational and professional trainings during the year and also innovates with introduction to leisure activities. For the past four years, we have been giving opportunities to members and aspiring members to discover a new sport. This year, we started with an initiation to badminton, which was held in March at BPS College, Beau Basssin with the experienced support of Mr Sylvain Hennequin as coach.

9 June 2012 Our members and aspiring members got the exclusive opportunity to discover quad biking in the adventurous and exciting setting of Domaine Andrea, in Souillac. Passing through beautiful sugar cane fields, crossing muddy rivers, enjoying the exceptional scenery from beaches of the South, drifting the cliffs to Leon Waterfall: our quad bikers have explored a very lively adventure filled with thrilling emotions, pleasant surprises and the legendary friendship of the JCI family.

Grappies
Among the 4 areas of opportunities present in JCI, community development is very much important as it seeks to empower individuals and groups of people by providing them with the skills they need to affect change in their own communities. JCI City Plus has been very much involved in different projects related to Active Citizenship over the past 4 years and this is why this year also, we made it a must to organize the Grappies activity. Our members decided to spend a special day with the elderly on the occasion of Mothers Day on the 26th May 2012 and this time we targeted the Sai Sharanam Ashram at Quatres Bornes. The centre very much appreciated our gesture and welcomed the little gifts and donations that we had to give. The event helped all members present to realize that we should care about these people who once devoted their time and courage to our society. And it was now time to thank them, to give some of our love and let them know that they have their place in the society. The centre benefitted from the donations given by Bindass Restaurant and members of the JCI family. They were grateful to the members for organising such an event. JCI Members and Aspiring Members showed that they cared about what is happening to the society, they are concerned and shall be involved in making the situations better. They were able to interact with the elders and give them some comfort in such a short time.

It was indeed a great occasion to bring a sparkle in the eyes and a smile on the faces of our elders and the members enjoyed as well.

The Original Active Citizens

As global citizens, we all have rights and responsibilities, as well as shared goals. Through active citizenship, we enact our sense of social responsibility to work towards these goals and benefit communities worldwide. Our Founder, Henry Giessenbier, was the original active citizen. He took steps to engage young people in civic involvement in 1914, and JCI members worldwide have followed his lead ever since.

International Scope
In JCI, the action is local, but our principles and impact are global. Members understand that in a globalized world, their local actions echo across the globe. 5,000 JCI Local Organizations addressing problems in their communities are united in a global movement creating global impact.

Eco-Business

28 November 2011 Conscious towards the protection of our environment for a better future, we organised an open forum at Lambic, Port Louis on green construction, with the collaboration of Biochalet, a

construction company, specialised in the manufacturing and installation of wooden houses and chalets in Europe and freshly established in Mauritius. During the forum, the public present has been introduced to the business of green construction, which has been defined as the construction for the future. In his observations, 2011 Vice President Vamen has reminded that as active citizens, JCI members have the responsibility to preserve the environment and promote green values to better impact our society and create positive change.

Business Networking
JCI City Plus is launching very soon an innovative business networking event; BusinessLink , in partnership with Mauritius Post & Cooperative Bank (MPCB), with the aim to build and provide a platform in Mauritius where local and foreign professionals, executives, entrepreneurs and business people can meet interesting new people in an enjoyable atmosphere. Debate Championship
Debating skills equip members to resolve conflicts, respect differences and overcome obstacles. Discussing topics that range from profound to comical, contestants argue their truth, relevance and accuracy. Capacity-building events like debating build a foundation of teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving that, we JCI members use to address issues in our local communities.
Some supporters of JCI City Plus with JCI Mauritius organised the 2012 National Debate Championship at the team members Muncipal Council of Port Louis in March, with the participation of teams from the 4 local chapters of Mauritius. After an interesting series of confrontations, JCI City Plus won this years edition whilst winning all the awards of the championship: BEST TEAM, BEST TEAM CAPTAIN and BEST SPEAKER. Leadership Seminar Series
The World that has been bestowed to us has been facing multiple challenges in the last years. Whether these challenges are the cause of Man (economic crisis in the 20th century, nuclear accidents) or of Nature (Tsunamis, droughts), their occurrence altogether has led intellectuals to self-question our economic model, international relations and geo-political situation. This reflection has now left the academic sphere and is spreading to broader thinking groups. Man has never been more conscious that the world he is creating at this instant and will leave as legacy is his own responsibility. Chaos in the world brings uneasiness, but it also allows the opportunity for creativity and growth We are presently at a crossroads. Now is our chance, during these chaotic times, to think of a renewal. The impulse for change will necessarily come from our generation, the one having this timely opportunity to reshape the world. The JCI Leadership Seminars Series are precisely designed for young Mauritians who wish to examine the directions they are taking in their own lives. JCI Mauritius proposes to reflect upon each and everyones commitment as citizens in the key aspects of our society. Seminar 1 was held on 17th January 2012 at Hennessy Park Hotel, Ebene, under the theme of Who and what will rule the world in the decades ahead by Dr Armand Clesse, world known author and former special counsellor to the government of Luxembourg. During the forum, Dr Clesse has spoken about the different political classes around the world, on recession , the economic problems facing Europe and questioning if China is becoming more powerful or is USA becoming less influential. Seminar 2 was held on 3rd April 2012 at Audi Zentrum, Reduit, under the theme of Avec toi ou sans toi, la politique se fera with Mr Jean Claude de lEstrac and Mr Pierre Dinan, as keynote speakers. Mauritius is currently on a cross-road, so corrective and concrete measures are recommended to ensure the future of our youngsters and give them the chance to join politics with new ideas so that our country can move forward. Seminar 3 was held on 7th June 2012 at Audi Zentrum, Reduit, under the theme of Entrepreneurship as a lever for growth and social welfare in times of economic turmoil with Mrs Vimi Appadoo and Mrs Aisha Allee-Mosaheb, as keynote speakers. With the worldwide economic crisis, finding a job on the Mauritian market will become, with time, increasingly complex. One solution for job seekers can be entrepreneurship. Governments worldwide are more and more encouraging the creation of small and medium enterprises to solve unemployment issues. This seminar had for objective to promote the economic and social benefits of entrepreneurship in the particular context of economic crisis.

18 December 2011 JCI City Plus celebrated its end-of-year party at Gold Beach Hotel in Flic en Flac, under the theme of Party like a Rockstar!

After a year of hard work with endless meetings, various projects and experiencing lots of interesting and impactful moments, it is time for celebrations and to party. We have all led Rocktars Saumya, Usha, Asha, Siddhanth and Harsha our paths to A Journey towards Excellence, and have developed strong fellowship ties with members and aspiring members of the organisation. For one night, on 18th December 2011, we were all transformed as the Rockstars of the world and experienced awesome and thrilling moments of fun, friendship and passion to our organisation. JCI Vice President, assigned to Africa & Middle East, Takor Takor, visited Mauritius from 4 to 10 March this year. During his stay, Vice President Takor has multiplied courtesy visits to local officials; the President of the Republic, the Lord Mayor of Port Louis and the partners of the different chapters of JCI Mauritius. Faithful to its tradition, JCI Mauritius hosted a cocktail, on 6 March at La Canelle, Domaine Les Pailles, in honour of our eminent guest from Cameroon. Three new members of JCI City Plus sworn in during this event. Dear JCI City Plus Members, I travelled safely back to Cameroon with a lot of fond memories of your beautiful island. Your friendship and zeal for positive action left me feeling rejuvenated. I will forever remember this bunch of young active and dynamic men and women I met in your Country. Please endeavour at all times to keep up this amazing spirit that exists amongst you guys. You are all awesome. Keep rocking and keep the flame burning! Takor Takor JCI Vice President

Fluttering stomach, sweaty and cold hands, and heart pacing; I made my way to the stage where I would finally be swearing in as JCI member during the JCI Vice President Cocktail. An initial nervousness was quickly replaced by a sense of pride and belonging as I received my JCI pin from the JCI Vice President himself. There started a journey that I am sure will be filled with challenging projects, diverse opportunities for self development and what I aspire to the most, the invaluable chance to help others less fortunate than me. JCI City Plus has welcomed me in their dynamic team as an aspiring member allowing me to participate fully in the various projects and I have to admit, that to date, I have been learning and growing, may it be as part of the debate team or as secretary on the fund raising project Fall in Love at Moulin Rouge. Area A Conference
JCI members unite at JCI international events to foster cooperation across boundaries, engage in dialogue to ignite global development projects and unite the JCI global network.
Every year, JCI members unite in their regions for JCI Area Conferences to exchange ideas, learn how to maximize their local impact and collaborate with other National Organizations in their Area. The four Area Conferences - Africa and the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, the Americas and Europe give members a chance to take advantage of JCIs international network while enhancing their National Organizations. The 2012 Area Conference for Africa and the Middle East (Area A) was held from 23 May to 27 May in Casablanca, Morocco. JCI Mauritius was represented by Vamen Poonoosamy (JCI City Plus) as Chief Delegate, Nousrina Peerbux (JCI Port Louis), Stephanie Jacquin (JCI Beau Bassin/Rose Hill) and Yogesh Bappoo (JCI Quatre Bornes).

Leadership Academy
From 20 to 22 May 2012, JCI delegates from Africa & Middle East gathered to sharpen their leadership skills, participate in a learning experience and expand their global network. Coming from 25 different countries, 60 delegates attended the 14th JCI Leadership Academy. This annual event introduces JCI national leaders to new and diverse ways to successfully lead their Organizations and their communities. Academicians got the privilege to attend powerful training modules by the dynamic and experienced JCI Executive Director from World Headquarters, Arrey Obenson, assisted by Kola Okinawa, from JCI Nigeria. 3 days of high-level and intense trainings, with group works and discussions around community impact on our continent. As assignment, Vamen Poonoosamy presented his groups case study on Democracy and Good Governance in Africa & Middle East. Nousrina Peerbux presented her groups work on Safeguarding Environment & eradication of malaria. Vamen and Nousrina are the two new graduates of the JCI Leadership Academy.

United Nations Millennium Development Goals
In September of the year 2000, leaders of 189 countries met at the United Nations (UN) in New York and endorsed the Millennium Declaration, a commitment to work together to build a safer, more prosperous and equitable world. The Declaration was translated into a roadmap setting out eight time-bound and measurable goals to be reached by 2015, known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). During the 2003 JCI-UN Leadership Summit held at the UN Headquarters in New York, JCI committed itself to contribute to support the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which seek to accelerate human development, achieve universal equality, and attain a more peaceful world by 2015.

Nothing But Nets
JCI is heavily involved in the effort to fight malaria transmission through the JCI Nothing But Nets campaign, which raises funds to purchase insecticidetreated bed nets and distribute them to families in Africa. Members, throughout the world help by creating programs to raise funds for JCI Nothing But Nets or by joining the JCI Nothing But Nets Birthday Campaign and asking their friends and family to contribute money in their name. Every 45 seconds, a child in Africa dies of malaria. Lives are not the only cost of this deadly disease. Workers cannot work, children cannot attend school and money is sunk into healthcare for both prevention and treatment.

In 2008, JCI Members took action to combat this global killer through the Nothing But Nets campaign in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. Through the JCI Nothing But Nets campaign, JCI Members educate their communities about the reality of malaria and fundraise for the purchase and distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets to families in Africa. Since the origin of the campaign, members across the globe have taken action by running projects at the local, national and international levels, demonstrating their commitment to ending malaria deaths. In 2008, JCI partnered with the United Nations Foundation to join the Nothing But Nets campaign and form JCI Nothing But Nets. The two organizations continue to work together to coordinate efforts and help achieve the UN goal to end malaria by 2015.

Why Bed Nets? Insecticide-treated bed nets are one of the most effective ways to prevent malaria. Bed nets work in two ways. They stop mosquitoes from biting during the night and spreading the disease, and the insecticide on the net kills the mosquitoes when they land on it, stopping them from flying on to their next victim. Bed nets can reduce malaria transmission by 50% and up to 90% in areas of high coverage. Other methods for malaria prevention include vaccinations, insecticide-spraying efforts and water treatment, but nets remain one of the most effective and cost-efficient prevention tools. A USD 10 donation funds the purchase and distribution of one bed net, as well as the education of a family on its proper use.

Mauritius is one of the top-donors of Africa to the JCI Nothing But Nets campaign. Every year, JCI Members expand their impact by designing a project to raise awareness and raise funds to donate directly to the JCI Nothing But Nets campaign. Projects are designed to engage the community and fellow JCI Members and provide an excellent opportunity to create an impactful activity for a good cause. One of the key goals of JCI Nothing But Nets is to create greater public awareness of the danger malaria poses and how easy it is to help by joining and partnering with us. JCI City Plus family grows everyday! Each and every member has an individual mission to bring a new comer to the organization. The Impact of One! This section of our e-newsletter gives freedom to our new members to express themselves and share their new experience. All views expressed in this corner may not be in accordance with the vision of JCI but reflects the opinions and feelings of our new comers. My friends always talked about JCI to me and I accompanied them to the Art Mela activity last year at Port Louis Waterfront. There, I was amazed with the work that JCI City Plus was doing in favour of handicapped and children from deprived regions of our country. The passion which JCI members work and the friendship amongst them made me join the organization last year and I have been honoured to become a member this year. I feel very proud to be a member in such an organization where I can develop myself and always learn new things in life. Since I joined JCI, I should say that my life has changed a lot and I am more committed to do social work and bring a positive change in the society. During JCI activities, I usually meet great leaders and professional people who always motivate me and inspire me to develop my skills and move forward in my JCI career.

Since I have joined JCI in 2010, I have received various opportunities to develop myself with knowledge through different seminars and trainings to be a better leader for tomorrow.
Through the various projects which I participated, I can surely say that I am proud to be a JCI member as we can see the positive impact of our results in society. My most inspirational experience was during the Grappies project, where we established a program to bring support and joy to elderly people of different old-age homes across the country. I always talk about JCI to my family members, colleague and friends so that they can have the opportunity to be part of such a great family where they can learn and grow positively in the society. As JCI member, our mission is to care for other and bring a smile on every living being on earth. As JCI member, I would now like to give back to the community all what I have learnt and acquired so that our society can progress and create the change for a better tomorrow. Since, then my experience with JCI City Plus is just wonderful: I am learning a lot of things and have developed many skills which I did not discover before. I meet a lot of people from different horizons and participate actively in the development of our society.
I can say that thanks to JCI City Plus, I have improved my administrative skills and have learnt how to be an effective leader, to better understanding and ability to communicate with people from a variety of backgrounds. I have gained in learning how systems interact to influence the life of the community and an understanding of how economics, on both the large and small scales, affects people's lives. Voice of our new comers
My first experience in the JCI City Plus family has been a very enriching and fruitful one. Indeed, I have participated in the 5th National Debate Competition and I have been awarded the prize of best speaker. This event has enabled me to develop team spirit, a winning mindset and my skills in giving impromptu speeches! I also got the opportunity to participate in my first ever public speaking contest through JCI. This too has brought a plus to my personal growth. Besides those fulfilling contests, what I love most about JCI is its mission, vision and purpose. I, myself, endeavors and strives to my very best to bring positive change in my community and extend it to my country. United we stand, divided we fall. Bearing this motto in mind, I have joined JCI so as to help create a better world by fostering unity and cooperation.
