Unleashing new possibilities with LED

What are LEDs?

An LED is an light emitting diode. Its light is produced by an electrical current passing through a semi conductive material, so it does not require a filament like an incandescent bulb. LEDs have advanced at remarkable rates to enable an entirely new category of lighting that will bring sense and simplicity to our everyday lighting.LED lighting is highly efficient, long lasting, environmentally friendly and inherently controllable - enabling both new and traditional applications of light. Already LED based solutions illuminate famous buildings, bridges, retail shops, television studios, theatre stages, hotels, casinos, hospitals, restaurants and celebrity-filled nightclubs arround the world.

How do LEDs work?

LEDs produce light in a very unique way; they produce light via a process called Electro-luminescence, a rather complex process that starts by turning a semi conductor material into a conducting material. A semiconductor with extra electrons is called N-type (negative) material, since it has extra negativelycharged electrons. In N-type material, free electrons can move from a negatively-charged area to a positively charged area. A semiconductor with extra holes is called P-type (positive) material since it has extra positively-charged gaps called holes. When excited with current the negative electron leaves its atom and the P-type materials positive attraction draws the free negative electron into its hole, and the hole also moves toward the electron, so on and so forth. As an electron travels to a hole, it carries energy, but in order to fit into the hole it must release any extra energy, and when it does, the extra energy is released in the form of light. When we maintain a steady flow of electrical current to the diode, it continues the process of allowing electrons to flow from the negative charged material and fall into the positive charged holes which maintains a steady stream of light out of the LED.

Whats so different?
LEDs consume less electric power. A LED bulb utilizes around 10 watts of energy that was confirmed 10 times less spaceconsuming than an incandescent bulb which utilizes up to 100 watts of electricity. The lengthy hours of usage and also energysaving functions of LEDs will definitely support you save more when compared with continually buying other inexpensive light bulbs that have shorter life span and also have no energysaving functions. Durability is another feature of LED lighting. They dont have glass tubes that may break and also trigger injury. They are also made making use of materials that do not generate toxic chemicals like that of incandescent and also fluorescent bulbs Lastly, LED lighting are made to generate pure light without flickers and glares.

Sustainability and LED solutions

Sustainability and respect for the environment are core values of Philips. And with LED based solutions, we take a major step forward in achieving both aims. When considering the sustainability of LEDs, the first aspect that generally springs to mind is low energy use. But there are plenty of others, including waste reduction, recyclability, the use of materials & resources and the effect on building and design practices.

Choosing the right LED solution

Avoiding common misconceptions about LED sources and fixtures

level of light while consuming far less than 60 watts. For example, an under-cabinet LED light from a leading supplier delivers 50 fc in typical desktop situations while consuming only about 6 watts per foot. 5. Because they produce no infrared energy, the beam of light from an LED source is cool. However, waste heat is produced within the LED itself during the conversion of electricity into light. This waste heat must be properly removed from the lighting system to maximize fixture performance and to avoid damage to the LEDs. In welldesigned LED lighting fixtures, heat removal is accomplished through carefully designed and engineered heat sinks that draw heat away from the LEDs and dissipate it into the air surrounding the fixture housing. 6. Initial fixture costs may be higher for some LED lighting solutions than for comparable incandescent and fluorescent lighting solutions. But initial fixture cost does not account for the total cost of owning, operating, and maintaining a lighting system. Because of their long useful life, LED lighting fixtures avoid the maintenance and materials costs which multiple relampings of incandescent fixtures require over tens of thousands of hours of operation. And because LEDs consume far less energy, annual power costs can be reduced by up to 80%.. The total cost of LED lighting systems, therefore, can be significantly lower than conventional systems. In fact, payback on LED lighting solutions can often be realized in less than three years.

1. Like all light sources, LED sources slowly fade over time. This light output degradation, or lumen depreciation, is determined by testing LED sources over a period of 6,000 hours or more. Factors that can cause lumen depreciation include drive current and heat generated within the device itself. Lumen maintenance describes how long a lighting fixture retains a certain percentage of its initial light output. White light sources used for general illumination are commonly considered to be at the end of their useful life when their light output falls below 70% of initial output. For white and colored accent and non-task lighting, the lumen maintenance threshold is often considered to be 50%. Well-designed LED lighting fixtures can retain 70% of their initial output for 50,000 hours or more, depending on operating conditions and other factors. At 24 hours per day of continuous use, such fixtures can deliver useful light for six years or longer many times as long as incandescent sources, and up to twice as long as longlife fluorescent sources. 2. If you compare the raw lumen output of conventional lamps with the lumen output of many LED lighting fixtures, it often seems that LED fixtures deliver less light than the conventional alternatives. Such comparisons, however, are inaccurate and misleading, as they fail to account for the significant amount of wasted light in conventional lighting solutions. Simply put, lumen output is a poor measure of the suitability of a lighting fixture for a given task. A better measure is delivered light how much light a fixture delivers to a surface or area, as measured in lux (lx) or footcandles (fc). You can make accurate comparisons between conventional and LED lighting fixtures on the basis of delivered light, as it measures how much of a light sources raw lumen output reaches a surface or area you want to illuminate. To determine how much of a conventional lamps raw lumen output reaches a task area, you must discount any light lost in the fixture housing (often over 30%), as well as any light lost as a result of lensing, shading, and filtering. Since incandescent and fluorescent lamps emit light in all directions, you must further discount any light emitted in a direction away from the target area. LED lighting fixtures are integrated systems in which the light sources (LEDs), the fixture housing, and the primary optics are inseparable. Lumen measurements of LED lighting fixtures, therefore, are performed on the entire system, and already account for light lost to the fixture housing and lensing. Furthermore, since LEDs are inherently directional, they emit almost all of their light output in the desired direction, rather than dispersing it in all directions. And since LEDs natively produce intensely saturated colored light, they require no gels or filters which can block a significant percentage of a fixtures light output (over 90% for certain shades of deep blue).
10 Professional LED Catalouge 2011

When comparing lighting fixtures on the basis of delivered light, LED fixtures often perform as well, and in some cases significantly better, than conventional fixtures, while consuming far less energy. 3. Many manufacturers test their LED chips on lab benches at room temperature with short pulses that produce a high efficacy that cannot be achieved in practical use. While these results are not incorrect, they do not reflect the typical expected output of LED sources integrated into lighting fixtures. Although percentages vary, it is not uncommon to see efficacy losses of up to 40%. Reputable LED fixture manufacturers do not base lumen measurements on the test results of their LED source suppliers. Instead, they use independent, third-party testing labs to measure and validate the output of their lighting fixtures according to test conditions spelled out in the LM-79 standard, published in 2008 by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES). Some highly efficient white-light LED lighting fixtures can achieve efficacy of over 40 lumens per watt (lm / W), sufficient to earn ENERGY STAR and other energy-efficiency ratings. For example, linear LED cove lights from a leading manufacturer achieve efficacies of 43.9 to 53.1 lm / W in normal operating conditions. 4. Because of incandescent light bulbs, youre probably used to looking at wattage to determine the light output of a light source: a 100watt lamp puts out more light than a 60-watt lamp. The fact is that incandescent lamps have a very low efficacy compared with CFLs, high-output fluorescent lamps, and LED light sources. All general service incandescent lamps use the same filament material heated to the same temperature, the only way to increase their light output is to increase the wattage. This is one of the main reasons why incandescent lamps are so energy wasteful. LED sources are much more efficient at converting watts to lumens. Different materials can be used within the LED sources themselves, each of which has its own light extraction efficacy. For these and other reasons, two different LED sources can consume the same number of watts but differ widely in lumen output. Because watts cant be used as an index of light output, evaluating the brightness of LED sources for a given situation requires you to think differently about lighting. A standard 60-watt incandescent lamp emits a total of about 800 lumens, but the light is emitted equally in all directions. When youre reading at your office desk, your book does not receive all 800 lumens from your desktop lamp, nor do you need it to. As described in Myth #2, the crucial measurement is delivered light. According to the IES, serious reading requires an average of 50 fc or 500 lx on the page. Many linear LED under-cabinet fixtures and other task lights can deliver this

7. Two important measurements of white light quality are correlated color temperature (CCT) and color rendering index (CRI). CCT describes whether white light appears warm (reddish), neutral, or cool (bluish). The standard definitions of CCT allow a range of variation in color that can be readily discerned by viewers even when the CCT value is the same. Ensuring color consistency, therefore, is a major concern of LED manufacturers. Leading LED lighting manufacturers use various LED selection schemes (binning) to ensure color consistency from fixture to fixture. On a scale of 0 (worst) to 100 (best), CRI measures the ability of a light source to reproduce the colors of objects faithfully in reference to an ideal light source the sun, for example, or an incandescent lamp. Most office, retail, educational, medical, and residential spaces require a minimum CRI of 70 90. Many white-light LED lighting fixtures available today achieve CRIs of 80 or better, comparable to many CFL lamps, quartz metal halide lamps, and some cool white fluorescent fixtures sufficient for the vast majority of applications. Because of well-known shortcomings of the standard CRI test for LED lighting, some LED lighting fixtures with low CRI scores produce visually pleasing light that renders colors appropriately. Color Quality Scale (CQS), a color-rendering standard that better accounts for the unique properties of LED light sources, is currently under development. Until CQS or a similar alternative is in place, you should observe LED sources with low CRI scores in person to evaluate how well they render color.

Efficacy of LED Sources

LED sources far surpass incandescent lamps in efficacy and compare favorably with most fluorescent lamps. Highest efficacy in reds and coolest whites 5000K and above.

Comparing LED and Conventional Light Fixture Efficacy

This table shows the starting efficacy of various fixtures, percentage of light loss, and net efficacy
Fixture Asymmetric TL Wall Wash Recessed CFL Downlight Surface-Mounted LED Downlight Indirect TL Troffer Direct / Indirect TL Pendant Starting Efficacy 80 Im / W 72 Im / W 66 Im / W 68 Im / W 74 Im / W Losses 62% 47% 49% 25% 20% Net Efficacy 30 Im / W 34 Im / W 34 Im / W 51 Im / W 59 Im / W

The LED downlight has the lowest starting efficacy, but its net efficacy exceeds the asymmetric linear fluorescent and equals the CFL downlight.

Case study

Our energy consumption is now half what it used to be and maintenance costs have decreased significantly.
- Lars-Olof Nilsson, Business Development Officer

The Project
The Swedish Civil Aviation Administration (LFV), the owner of Arlanda, is intending to install maintenancefree lighting in large areas of the airport. Following a successful test with LEDs, Arlanda is the first airport in Europe to have LuxSpace light fittings installed Philips LED light fitting for general lighting. For Arlanda Energi, a division of LFV, the installation of LuxSpace is an important measure for saving energy and reducing maintenance costs for lighting. Arlanda Stockholm, the largest airport in Sweden, consumes approximately the same amount of energy as an average small Swedish town. The day and night illumination of the lighting results in high energy consumption. In the past at Arlanda, it was costing as much to replace the bulb as the fitting and bulb put together. The bulbs are in most cases difficult to access e.g. situated in escalators or high on the ceiling or in other difficult to access locations. Maintenance personnel had to use special scaffolding in order to reach the high ceilings, with the consequence that the escalators had to be temporarily disabled during maintenance. This was the reason why Arlanda Energi switched to LED lighting. The long lifecycle of LED lighting yields great savings in maintenance costs. LEDs also contribute to extremely low energy consumption.

Arlanda airport
Stockholm, Sweden

The Solution

LuxSpace makes it possible to achieve extremely low energy consumption in public spaces whilst preserving light quality. LuxSpace also allows an even distribution of light, stable light yield and good colour reproduction. In the first phase the test project involved 50 light fittings in corridors, escalators and toilet facilities close to baggage handling. LuxSpace is the first Philips installation to be used in such an environment. It did not take long for positives results to be apparent: Our energy consumption is now half what it used to be and maintenance costs have decreased significantly, says Lars-Olof Nilsson, Business Development Officer for Arlanda Energi. Since the installation in March 2009 everything has gone very well. If the LEDs live up to their lifecycle of 50,000 hours, we should be able to install LuxSpace in several locations in Arlanda, according to Nilsson. The benefits In addition to low maintenance costs and low energy consumption, great benefit of LEDs is that they can be turned on and off very quickly, compared to standard metal halogen bulbs. Another benefit of LEDs is that they do not contain any heavy metals. LuxSpace offers the opportunity for the use of motion sensors which can further reduce energy consumption. At an airport like Arlanda, it is not necessary for all areas to be illuminated day and night. The Philips intelligent control and motion sensor detection system offers many opportunities to save even more energy. We have not yet decided whether to install this solution, but we are certainly interested in the technology, says Nilsson.

AB Group
Orzinuovi, Italy

We looked for an advanced solution that ensured a level of comfort for people working in the offices, as well as optimum management of energy resources.
- Marco Baronchelli, Technical Manager, AB Group

The Project
Founded in 1981 by Angelo Baronchelli, the AB Group is Italys leading company in the design and installation of plants for the co-generation and self-generation of power from renewable sources. The group hasalways been passionate about energy efficiency and eco-sustainability, something which is at the heart of everything they do. So when plans for their new engineering site were drawn up, it was clear that the technology used to light it would have to form part of this meticulous attention to energy efficiency. The AB engineering hub is designed to house around 100 engineers, technicians and sector specialists, making it the largest nerve centre for co-generation in Europe. From a lighting perspective it presented three challenges. Firstly, the spaces had to be lit in an intelligent manner without having to make use of natural light. Secondly, the solution had to provide comfortable light levels for employees working in the offices. And finally, excellent management of energy resources with no waste was of paramount importance.

The Solution

Philips innovative LED lighting technology was more than able to meet all three conditions. DayZone provides high-quality lighting with impressive visual comfort and glare control and colour consistency that are compliant with all office norms. LuxSpace features the latest LED technology and delivers consistent light output and high colour rendering. Not only do these two innovative solutions have a captivating, modern design, they also provide guaranteed energy saving, long-lasting components and no harmful substances such as mercury. Whats more, they enable the AB Group to manage all the lighting by means of a single system, something that proved to be the deciding factor in choosing Philips. The benefits With a lifetime of 50,000 hours at a minimum flux of 70% DayZone and LuxSpace outperform traditional fluorescent systems and can reduce maintenance costs by as much as 70%. Based on average hours of use within a typical building, they could provide illumination at ABs engineering hub for the next 15 years. The intelligent control system also enables further savings to be made. Daylight harvesting and presence detection switch lights off when there is enough natural light or when an office is not in use. Whats more, because the solution provides the best possible levels of visual comfort in terms of colour temperatures and light intensity, it has also improved well-being for everyone working in the offices. Thanks to Philips, the AB Group now has a state-of-the-art solution that showsits eco-credentials in the best possible light.

Shop windows
Everybody is vying for attention. But with the proper lighting, your shop window can stand out in the crowd. Light can be directed exactly where you want it, to offer highlights and texture. Also, by applying higher lighting levels to your display and avoiding dark rear walls in the background, you can avoid your window turning into a mirror. Dynamic lighting can create stopping power, support seasonal themes, make shoppers curious, and make them want to enter.

Entrances
The entrance is the gateway to your brand. Shoppers should not only be enticed in with, for example, highlighted focal points, such as a new product or a seasonal ad campaign but also feel comfortable when they enter and want to explore further. They should understand the layout of the shop and be able to locate the areas that interest them. Lighting can be used to provide each zone with its own distinct character, while ensuring a cohesive ambiance that reinforces your brand.

Shops often have interesting architectural features interesting wall structures, an exposed girder, a column. By picking these out with careful lighting, you can make the stage more interesting for the shopper. It is all about creating the shopping experience. Creating the promise of something exciting, something out of the ordinary. Often such features can provide an inspiration for displaying products, and for setting the scene for higher sales.

Case study

With the Green Supermarket concept, Philips fits in seamlessly with Bio-Planets green philosophy. It is a clever selection of environmentally friendly and cost-effective lighting solutions, as well as being customer-friendly.
- Tamara de Ridder, Marketing Manager Bio-Planet

The Project
Bio-Planet is an appropriate name for Belgiums greenest supermarket. The Colruyt Group stores are known for their extensive selection of organic and green products, but their environmental awareness doesnt stop there. Opening a new branch in Leuven gave them the perfect opportunity to specify the most durable and energy saving materials. In this endeavour Bio-Planet was not alone, says Tamara de Ridder, the supermarket chains Marketing Manager. Philips developed a customized Green Supermarket lighting concept, a clever selection of environmentally friendly and cost-effective lighting solutions attuned to the various sections of the supermarket. The attractive properties of the light turned out to be an added bonus: products were illuminated in a more attractive way and looked fresh for longer. Bio-Planet really stands out from the crowd in a field where competition is important.

The Solution

Bio-Planets customer sees the effect of the Green Supermarket concept all around when shopping. At the entrance LuxSpace downlights fitted with phosphor LEDs create an inviting ambiance. Compared to the usual energy saving lamps, 50% more energy is saved and they have a 50,000 hour lifespan. The same combination of attractive illuminations, energy saving and low maintenance costs was the aim for the entire store. The total energy saving for the current lighting is 25%. And ingenious applications of LED technology feed the imagination. For example, at the fresh food counter Fugato FM Fortimo Food LEDdownlights make the cuts of meat look really natural. In the cooling cabinets Fortimo LED Food Modules provide a full light spectrum without UV radiation, which prevents product discolouration and keeps the products fresh. The bakery department was fitted with adjustable spotlights with champagne coloured LED light. The bread products are also attractively illuminated and because of the minimal heat generation the products remain fresh for longer. The use of the robust, waterproof Pacific LED armature in the fruit and vegetable department highlights Bio-Planets innovative approach. Apart from their economical and efficient illumination, LEDs also benefit from higher light output in colder areas.

Fussl Fashion
Vienna, Austria

Fussl Fashion is not just a byword for high-quality clothing, but also for social and environmental responsibility. For us, a longterm approach is important when we think and act. Installing Philips innovative LED systems proves this.
- Ernst Mayr, one of the managing directors of Fussl Fashion

The Project
Fussl Fashion specialises in fashion for men, women and children, from exclusive labels to internationally renowned brands. The rapidly growing company currently has 115 branches throughout Austria and anticipates 2010 sales of over 100 million euros. But Fussls finger is not only on the fashion pulse. The firm also takes its environmental protection responsibilities seriously. The tough environmental challenge is to be saving 1000 tonnes of CO2 per year in the near future. For this reason, throughout the new 645 m2 branch in Shopping City Sd in Vsendorf (Vienna), they planned to install a LED lighting system that would pay for itself within 5 years at most. A lighting concept would show off the colour and quality of the garments in every part of the sales area. It also had to be low maintenance and provide a high light level of 1000 lux, which was standard in nearby fashion boutiques.

The Solution

155 Latina LED compact lights illuminate the general area in Fussls new flagship store in one of Europes largest shopping centres. The attractive downlights are supported by 26 innovative DayZone lights. Their warm, non-glare light with colour temperatures of 3000 K make a great impression. Thanks to the circular lights beam the lamp itself is angular the DayZones significantly improve the ambience and are effective in preventing any tunnel effect. The garments are highlighted with compact StyliD spots 25 W (3000 K and 4000 K). 100 swivelling StyliD recessed luminaires were installed in the entrance area, 110 swivelling StyliD semirecessed luminaires are positioned in the walls, and 75 StyliD power-track spots were put in the display area and the store. Because of the modern accent lighting system the space looks much wider and deeper. Herbert Gadermayr, CEO of Gadermeier, the electrical installation company: With these innovative Philips LED systems, we have achieved an ideal lighting system with excellent colour reproduction, that also meets Fussl Fashions environmental requirements. Compared with halogen lighting, the flagship store now realises a significant drop in CO2 emissions and a long-term fall in energy costs. As a result of the long 15-year service life, operating and maintenance costs will also fall substantially. Thanks to the relaxed atmosphere the shopper feels at home and is able to clearly see the colour and texture of each garment. The staff find the new lighting far more pleasant particularly due to the reduced glare level and the low level of heat generation. For these reasons, the new lighting concept has successfully been introduced in many other branches of Fussl Fashion.

LED lighting is innovative, offers a great many new possibilities and really suits the look and feel we wish to convey. Furthermore, by fitting the entire shop with LED lighting we are 100% distinctive from everyone else.
- Marc van der Mijn, Store Manager Heineken brand store

The Project

Close to the Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam there is a unique store where you can experience the Heineken brand in a spectacular way: Heineken The City. Spread over the four areas of music, fashion, travel & events and a beer shop (beer-related products), the visitor is offered a range of possibilities. From booking tickets for events, the purchase of exclusive clothing and bags to designing your own beer bottles... Heineken literally brings its mission of Serving the planet to life here.

The Solution

Heineken The City

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

In the hyper-modern equipped retail store architecture, technology and LED lighting flow together in harmony. Whereas the LED lighting sometimes supports the architecture, it often demands a dominant role itself. LED string has been used in this way for supportive (Heineken) green accent lighting in the coves above the wall furniture. And the cool white light of the LEDline is appropriately ever-present in the lifesize, decorative refrigerators containing beer bottles. Warm white light provides an intimate atmosphere in the recording studio. From the mirror wall which comes to life wonderfully thanks to LED pixel backlighting, the Spot LED for the lighting of Heineken gadgets, to the fresh spotlighting of the LEDline for the walls and either side of the entrance: LED lighting has been applied refreshingly and functionally throughout. The benefits Our visitors are often bowled over by the stores ambience. The lighting certainly contributes to that effect. LED lighting has a clear added value compared to other lights, says van der Mijn. It creates a real atmosphere, which at the same time provides good light. Furthermore, LED lighting has a very low energy consumption, which is even more attractive with so many light sources. A further advantage is the long lifecycle of the bulbs. The Spot LED has been used in some inaccessible places. Fortunately we dont have to replace them very often.

- Vinay Halambi, General Manager Projects, McDonalds India West & South

The Project
McDonalds is the worlds leading food service retailer with more than 31,000 restaurants in 119 countries serving more than 50 million customers each day. Celebrating over 12 years of leadership in food service retailing in India, McDonalds now has a network of over 160 restaurants across the country, with its first restaurant launch way back in 1996. Prior to its launch, the company invested four years to develop its unique cold chain, which has brought about a veritable revolution in food handling, immensely benefiting the farmers at one end and enabling customers to get the highest quality food products, absolutely fresh and at a great value. McDonalds as a company is very sensitive towards its environment responsibility and has always encouraged innovations to reduce their carbon foot prints. Among the various initiatives, LED lighting is one of the key areas of impact.

The Solution

On the lighting front the challenge was to create an inviting and warm ambiance for the customers without worrying about the repair and maintenance of the light fixture during the operational hours. Philips LEDO LED down lighters were used.

Low energy consumption is important, and so is a sense of security. But the most important factor is the customer experience. Customers should experience the shop as a pleasant environment to stay in. This has been made possible, thanks to Philips.
- Tamara de Ridder, Marketing Manager Bio-Planet

The Project
Joost van Aardenne talks about the complete renovation of the BP petrol station at the Kempenbaan West in Tilburg. We had a unique opportunity to give the station a complete facelift. We wanted to significantly improve the customer experience - but not at the cost of the environment. Another priority was to reduce the stations energy consumption. The ultimate goal was clear: within six and a half weeks, the new BP signboard and Wild Bean Caf had to be up and running. The entire project is to serve as a pilot project for the rest of theNetherlands.

The Solution

BP

Tilburg, The Netherlands

Philips Lighting has supported us by sharing their expertise and experience in lighting. That is how we ended up with the LED concept. This is the first petrol station illuminated entirely by LED lighting, adds a proud Joost van Aardenne. LED offers all kinds of possibilities. It does not need time to warm up, it consumes little energy, and it has a longer life span. Spotlighting certain elements gives customers greater focus. And the intensity of the light is varied to create a pleasant atmosphere in the Wild Bean Caf, while giving the products in the refrigerated section stronger and more appealing visibility. LED lighting also provides significant advantages outside the shop. The awning lights dim when there are no customers and brighten when a customer drives up. This not only results in tremendous cost savings, but also gives customers a greater sense of safety, according to Joost van Aardenne.

Case study

The bulb in a floodlight lasts three years on average, while an LEDline lasts 25 years. This makes one thing certain: Vilvoorde will get enjoyment out of its light concept for a very long time
- Christophe Thomas, Lighting Designer for Outdoor Lighting Belgium and Luxembourg

The Project
Background The Flemish town of Vilvoorde has recently gained a prestigious light installation with its renovated town hall, thanks to warm white light from surface illumination created by floodlights, and cool light from vertically arranged LED floodlights city beautification at its very best. The Challenge This was a very important project, not only technically, but also regarding Philips image. This is why we created a model, not only to demonstrate the natural transition to the end product, but also to create a connection by making our design tangible. And despite the fact that our concept was considerably more expensive than that of our biggest competitor, mayor Jean-Luc Dehaene was very happy to team up with us, says Christophe Thomas, Lighting Designer for Outdoor Lighting Belgium and Luxembourg.

The Solution

City centre
Terneuzen, The Netherlands

Thomas light design stands out through its simplicity: there arent too many frills, but rather a meticulous blend of warmth and austerity. There are reasons for this: The town hall is an old building with a classic appearance, which means the lighting plan has to be kept simple, while also highlighting the right areas and being easy to maintain. Thanks to the subtle light combination from floodlights and LEDlines, this has been a great success. In total we used four different light varieties: Decoflood, Mini Decoflood, Pompe and LEDlines. The latter product illuminates the vertical lines of the building in particular, but without being dominating. The cool white light from the LEDlines, contrasted with the warmer light from the floodlights, creates a distinct tone for the overall concept, especially in combination with the town halls blue bricks. Because the LEDlines have been mounted at a great height and are exactly as wide as the columns they illuminate, they can barely be seen. The benefits Whats possibly even more important is that they will last a very long time. Thomas: The bulb in a floodlight lasts three years on average, whilst an LEDline lasts 25 years. This makes one thing certain:Vilvoorde will get enjoyment out of its light concept for a very long time.

Case study

Thanks to floodlighting and other lights using LED, colours and details can now really be seen. Even the bullet holes in the facade, which only older Rotterdammers knew were still there, are visible again.
- Marco de Boer, Primo Exposures

The Project
At the moment, the Coolsingel in Rotterdam is going through a complete metamorphosis thanks to the implementation of a new lighting plan, and the illumination of the City Hall is also currently being worked on. The stunning architecture and history of the building are now shown in their full glory once again. Rotterdam City Hall was completed in 1920 and surprisingly it survived the bombing raids of 14 May 1940. Aside from the ground floor, there are three storeys and an attic and the building also has a clock tower which is more than 70 metres high. Rotterdams citizens are proud of their city hall, but according to Marco de Boer of Primo Exposures, there was a large discrepancy between this pride and the buildings illumination, which is why he took care of the final design and installation of the new lighting. The town hall was illuminated at night by sodium lights and their yellow light made the facade look completely flat. Weve now illuminated the building in such a way that justice is done to its fine architecture.

City hall
Vilvoorde, Belgium

The Solution

LEDline was installed along the edge of the majestic roof. The clear white light, enriched with a small amount of blue, emphasises the blue-grey hue of the slate roof. The stepped gable has also been fitted with LEDline2, supported by four Proflood light fixtures, two of which are aimed at the statue at the centre. The two narrow windows at the sides of the main entrance are magically illuminated. We achieved this effect by using the most modern Proflood light fixtures, fitted to two posts opposite the building. This is a first for the Netherlands, says Marco de Boer. The ten statues along the facade are each lit by two to four LED modules and in addition another LEDline2 light fixture was placed in a recess in the corner tower, behind the large statue of Johan van Oldenbarneveld. This brings the statue into the foreground even more. Marco de Boer has received many positive reactions to his project. Thanks, amongst other things, to floodlighting with LED lights, the buildings colours and details can now really be seen. Even the bullet holes in the facade, which only older Rotterdammers knew were there, are visible again.

Philips Lighting partnered with Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the Climate Group to help municipal corporations understand practical ways in which they could make substantial cuts in urban emissions and savings on energy from street lighting.
- Aditi Dass, The Climate Group

The Project

Kolkata municipal corporation LED Street lighting

Kolkata, India

The Climate Group is an independent, not-for-profit organization working internationally with government and business leaders to advance smart policies and technologies to cut global emissions and accelerate a clean industrial revolution. Its global coalition of companies, states, regions and cities around the world recognize the economic and environmental imperatives of taking decisive actions now. The Climate Group is working with the worlds most influential business and government leaders to make clean technologies commercially viable. The group wanted to take up the very new technology - LED lighting which consumes about 40-50% less energy than the conventional sodium vapor lamps. This reduction of 40-50% goes up to as high as 70-80% if the LEDs are controlled by smart adaptive controls.

The Solution

Philips Lighting partnered with Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the Climate Group to help municipal corporations understand practical ways in which they could make substantial cuts in urban emissions and save on energy from street lighting. In Kolkata, the group has retrofitted around 300 street lights with Philips Roadstar LED streetlights.

The sun is an in-exhaustive, reliable, non-polluting source of power. Concerns over global climatic change, local air pollution and resource scarcity make photovoltaic (PV) an increasingly attractive energy supply technology. Combining the solar energy with LEDs can provide efficient lighting solutions. Solar powered outdoor lighting products are ideal for lighting the area in remote locations where the electricity is unavailable or erratic. Even in urban areas, these find great usage to reduce dependency on conventional power and contribute towards green energy. Reliable and long life makes this solution effective in fulfilling our present and future lighting requirements.

The spirit of the hotel determined our new lighting

- Hotel director Pia Jakobsen, Scandic Palace Hotel

The Project

Consideration for the architecture and the original atmosphere of the hotel was one of the major challenges. Managing Hotel director Pia Jakobsen: It was crucial that the new lighting matched the spirit of the hotel. Through generations, the Scandic Palace has settled in the minds of the guests, a fact that we do not want to put at risk. At the same time, we aim to become swan-labelled, and being a member of the Scandic chain since spring 2009 has naturally also caused us to comply with the environmental policy of Scandic, which was formulated as early as 1994. It has been a difficult balancing act. Another challenge was the wish for the return of the investment to be measurable through concrete results. Pia Jakobsen: We have set clear objectives, both short term and long term. For refunding and reduction in energy consumption, because it is obviously important for us to reduce our CO2-emissions.

The Solution

Scandic Palace Hotel has drawn up a plan for the new lighting in collaboration with Philips. Technical manager Jan Brink-Pedersen reports: Luckily, the development of LED lighting has speeded up so much in recent years that the quality now is top-notch. For example, in terms of colour, where we have chosen through-going, warm lighting, which is inaccordance with the nuances and light sources that were intended for the hotel. As a result, the majority of the 4390 light sources in the classic hotel in Copenhagen are LED products. The low heat generation from the LED lighting is undoubtedly going to lead to less demand for aircondition, says Jan Brink-Pedersen.

Brilliant savings
- Hotel director Pia Jakobsen, Scandic Palace Hotel

The Project

The Westin Palace Madrid volunteered to be a pilot hotel and test the new bulbs generation from Philips. The process started by an audit from Philips in October 2008. Jerome Lienaert, Manager Six Sigma Black Belt accepted to lead this project. The new bulbs were first tested in rooms, on the floors and in the banquet corridors and no-one noticed any difference in quality or warmth of the lighting between the conventional and the energy saving bulbs. On top the new bulbs were very esthetical. The life time of a bulb varies between 3.000 and 8.000 hours and calculations showed a return on investment of 10 months. The back of the house (BOH) is currently being renovated and this new project also includes the Philips new generation bulbs. The initial project saves 741 804 Kwh per year which represents 7.9% of 2008 total consumption. This represents savings of 67.000 on electricity. It also represents an impressive 318 975 k annual reduction on CO2 emissions or the equivalent of 15 949 trees. The Spanish government economically motivates such investments and if the study is accepted the Westin Palace will be able to claim around 4% of the total project cost or an extra 3 800. Finally Philips was so pleased with the outcome of the study and our decision to buy the bulbs that they will sponsor the lighting of the dome (value 7.000) and use the Westin Palace Madrid in their advertising. In addition, since Spain has eliminated the monopoly of the electricity supplier we followed the project of the Westin Valencia and hired the expertise of Evolutia for a annual fee of only 900. They made recommendations where we could buy our energy from. Since July 1st 2009 we decided to buy our electricity from a pool of suppliers and have since then saved 28 737 in cost of electricity. We calculate that by the end of the year on top of the investment of low energy bulbs we will save another 7% by buying electricity more efficiently.

With the help of Philips, were applying technology as an enabler to deliver a better customer experience and more cost-effective operations
- Michael Levie, CEO of citizenM hotels

The Project

Affordable luxury for the people is citizenMs slogan, and it stands for hotels that cater for a new generation of travelers: the Citizen Mobile. These customers know what they want in a hotel stylish design, great value, comfort, free entertainment and a good location. They also want friendly technology, that enables them to personalize their hotel stay exactly the way they want it. That extends from personalized check-in to lighting, temperature and curtain control, wireless internet access and a flat-screen entertainment center all accessible through an intuitive MoodPad controller. Personalized settings from your ID card The system allows guests personal profiles to be stored in the CRM(Customer Relation Management) / PMS (Property Management System), which enables the hotel to remember returning guests and their preferences. As a result, the hotel can create a unique intimacy with its guests, removing the traditional feeling of anonymity from the hotel experience. Guests can register their personal profiles at home, which allows them to bypass the often tedious and time-consuming check-in process. They can quickly and conveniently identify themselves on arrival by using their personal RFID cards.

CitizenM
Amsterdam, The Neatherlands

The Solution

Once in the room, guests can use the MoodPad to control the character of the ambient lighting in their room according to their mood or the atmosphere they want to create. At the touch of a button, they can switch from warm colors, closed blinds, ambiance music and a cosy temperature, to more functional lighting and ambiance for mobile working. The MoodPad also gives them free access to videos, movie channels and online content through their flat-screen TV, as well as free music on demand and wireless internet access.

The Project

Sitting on Londons Southbank, once the headquarters of local government for London, County Hall is, perhaps, better known for its tourist attractions, businesses and hotels, which have made their home within this grand architectural space.

The Solution

Architainment Lighting Ltd installed a state-of-the-art LED lighting solution. Offering exceptional lighting projection of up to 500 feet, Philips ground breaking ColorReach Powercore technology has ensured that County Hall is now as much of an iconic landmark on Londons Southbank by night as it is by day. With LED development moving ever forward, the project took full advantage of the latest introduction of Philips ColorReach Powercore and the benefits it offered ensuring its 2 main objectives were fulfilled. The first of these was that the illumination of the building should allow County Hall to become a distinctive and attractive landmark on the night time scene as well as providing a sense of cohesion with other attractions along this popular stretch of the river. Secondly, the lighting solution should be flexible enough to accommodate the requirements of corporate clients who hire out the area for their own events. The thinking here being that the lighting could be changed to reflect the brand colors of the individual companies involved. ColorReach Powercore is the first LED architectural floodlight which is powerful enough to illuminate large-scale structures having more lumen output than any other comparable fixture for exterior illumination. Indeed, it offers over 5,000 lumens over an unprecedented light projection of over 500 feet. As Peter Castelton, Managing Director of Metropolitan Estates explains, Having seen what Philips ColorReach Powercore was capable of at the initial trial we were completely convinced that this was the right solution for us. We have certainly not seen anything that can beat its flexibility, superb projection capability and excellent precision control. What is more is that it provides saturated color output at significantly less cost for installation, operation and maintenance than traditional light sources and in todays current economic climate these cost elements simply cannot be ignored.

Case study

Philips has supplied a state-of-the-art LED lighting solution at Gatesheads world famous Millennium Bridge. This truly unique piece of engineering is now complemented by ground breaking ColorReach Powercore technology.

The Project
Acclaimed as the worlds first and only tilting bridge the LED lighting solution supplied is in itself a revolutionary development in LED technology. As Craig Grieveson of Stage Electrics comments, When Gateshead council decided that the time had arrived to update the existing lighting system it was an ideal opportunity to put forward Philips ColourReach. Its the first LED architectural floodlight which is powerful enough to illuminate large-scale structures having more lumen output than any other comparable fixture for exterior illumination.

The Solution

Gateshead Millennium Bridge

Newcastle, UK

Indeed, ColorReach offers exceptional light projection of up to 5,000lumens over 500 feet providing colour mixing effects through both static and dynamic colour changing sequences. In this instance, the ColorReach modules also offered an energy saving opportunityoperating at 290 W at full output compared to the 700 W traditionalfloodlights they replaced. Simple and easy to use the system is programmed to run from sunset through to 1am each evening. To create these stunning effects, a total of 8 RGB LED ColorReach Powercore luminaires were installed, all incorporating a flexible selection of beam angles allowing differing combinations of dynamic displays to be produced. These were run via an DMX controller using astronomically triggered timelines as well as real time special events. Potential also exists, for example, to use one beam on the modules lower half to bathe the vertical plane with colour at deck level whilst utilising a different beam angle to project a contrasting or complementary colour hundreds of feet up at the top of the bridge arch. In addition, two remote touch screens have been installed to allow bridge staff to take manual control of the system for last minute special requests or specific colour requirements. Without doubt, the additional dynamic flexibility offered by ColourReach will further add to its multi award winning status as a major national and international tourist attraction.

Lighting plays a significant role in the project, balancing the historical roots with a modern, constantly changing content. The dome breathes light!
- Kai Piippo, Lighting designer, Professional Member of PLDA

The Project
The project was to re-design PUB, the oldest department store in Sweden. Formerly a rather anonymous city galleria, PUB is changing into a modern department store focused on fashion for a young, urban, internationally orientated target group. The lighting design concept for the cupola aimed to emphasize its role as a natural centre point of the department store. The architectural design allowed for an interesting play with light, shape and movement. The elegantly lit dome is the visual centrepiece of PUB, Stockholms oldest department store. The upper level space is intended to serve as a natural gathering point, and therefore the domes lighting scheme was designed to draw customers up from the stores lower floors. The designers sought to create a dynamic atmosphere where customers would experience various scenes during their visit, and Philips intelligent LED lighting proved the ideal choice for bringing their concept to life. During the day, ten different lighting scenes create variable ambiance in the space. For example, customers visiting in the morning are treated to a fifteen-minute sunrise scene, incorporating warm colors and smooth movements to align with the human bio-rhythm. In the afternoon, the pulse of the store quickens; the colors become more vivid and the dynamics more playful and experimental.

The Solution

By changing the colours, the intensities and the speed of the dynamics of the 500 RGB LED light fittings that are hidden in the construction, the cupola transforms into a living element that breathes light.

We feel weve created something engaging and inspiring that has redefined not only perceptions of Asian Paints in the market, but the Indian retail landscape in general
- KBS Anand, President of Decorative Business, Asian Paints

The Project

Home dcor in India is handled almost entirely by contractors. Consumers have little involvement in home decor and do not use much colour in their homes. The challenge of Asian Paints color store project was to design a flagship store that would inspire consumers to do more with color. For example, the entrance of the store is highlighted with hundreds of lights suspended in an arch, inviting guests to choose a color from a series of pedestals. Motion sensors hidden within each pedestal send a pulse of the selected color up through the archway lights and across the facade, creating constant color shifts throughout the whole store-front. The first Experience Color Store opened in Mumbai in 2009 and has already won a couple of design awards in the region: - Best International Retail Interior, Retail Interior Awards 2008 - Best Manufacturers Showroom, Best Innovative Concept, Best in Class for International Store Design, Retail Design Institute Awards 2008 - Creme de la Creme, WPPed Cream 2008 - Visual Technology in a Visual Display,VMSD International Visual Competition 2009 - Silver IDEA, IDSA IDEA 2009 - A.R.E. Award 2009

The Solution

Philips Color Kinetics - iColor Flex SLX are embedded into the suspended disks in the entrance. Using red, blue and green LEDs motion sensors with light system manager creates constant color shifts throughout the whole store-front.

Practise what you preach. If you are going to promote sustainable business then you really ought to make sure the lighting is an illuminating example as well.
- Thomas Schuurmans, New business developer at Reggs

The Project
Reggs, a design agency in Amsterdam, translates design and communication into brand strategies and effective carriers, such as products, packaging and corporate identity. Reggs does this on the basis of its own unique vision. Creating added value through sustainability is the slogan Reggs uses to convince clients that sustainable business really is possible. Schuurmans explains: We wanted to use light to create a cosy, friendly atmosphere whilst at the same time retaining the industrial character of the space. Echoing the functional grid of factory lamps that used to hang here, we chose to install a grid of lamps that are reminiscent of the archetypal incandescent lamp.

Design Agency Reggs

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The design agency is located in the production hall of what used to be a bubble-gum factory. The studio has a floor space of 750 m2 and is 8 metres high.

The Solution

Initial research into the possibilities showed that the Philips MASTER LED would be the most suitable. It has the familiar shape of an incandescent lamp, but thanks to the LED technology it is very energy-efficient, says Schuurmans. The lamp produces light that is bright white yet personal at the same time this ties in nicely with the creative atmosphere in the space. The bold design with cooling ribs fits in beautifully with the industrial look and feel of this environment. Various calculations to determine the light output showed that a total of 216 lamps would be required to light the space effectively. These have been installed in a fine-meshed grid below the ceiling. Because they are all at exactly the same height, as dusk falls it looks as if there is a second, transparent ceiling between the floor and the ceiling, and this creates a friendlier atmosphere in the large factory hall.
