Zipperer leaving Senate seat for post in Walker administration

Sen. Rich Zipperer (R-Brookfield) will be stepping down from his elected post for a position in Gov. Scott Walkers administration. Zipperer was tabbed to be Walkers deputy chief of staff and senior counsel. Zipperers district covered portions of Menomonee Falls, Sussex, Lisbon, Brookfield, Pewaukee, Waukesha, Hartford, Erin and Richfield. He was elected to the Senate in 2010 after serving two terms in the state Assembly. While in the Senate, Zipperer served on the Judiciary, Utilities, Commerce and Government Operations committees. A statement issued by Zipperers office also noted he serves as the Senate Republican appointee on the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, and earlier this session he served as a member of the Joint Committee on Finance. Before being elected to the Legislature, Zipperer was deputy chief of staff and district director for Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner (RMenomonee Falls). He will begin his new position Aug. 6. It has been an incredible honor serving the residents of Waukesha and Washington Counties in the State Assembly and Senate, and I will be forever thankful for the trust the voters placed in me to represent them and their families in Madison, Zipperer said. Kohls to keep headquarters in Falls, second campus planned

Menomonee Falls will assume ownership of the 530,000-square-foot building at N54 W13901 Woodale Drive that previously was a Kohls Corporation distribution center, with the agreement expected to close this fall. For three years following the completion of the property exchange, Kohls can choose to develop the property as incremental office space. Following the development of the second site, the company plans to continue operations at its headquarters at N56 W17000 Ridgewood Drive and the credit service center located at N54 W13600 Woodale Drive. The agreement will be supported by $62.5 million in tax credits over 12 years that will be provided by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), which will create an Enterprise Zone to provide the credits. The actual amount of tax credits provided to Kohls will depend on how many jobs new jobs the company creates. According to information from the WEDC: The contract with Kohls requires them to retain 4,500 jobs, create 3,000 jobs and invest $250 million in new and existing facilities. They are eligible for up to $47.5 million in tax benefits, and an additional $15 million in job tax credits if they continue to hire new full-time employees after Kohls has been certified for the $47.5 million. $39.380 million is allocated for job

In a statement issued July 19, Kohls announced it will assume ownership of a 100-acre vacant property in the Woodland Prime Office Park and will also acquire a small office building next to the vacant property. This real estate will provide Kohls the opportunity to develop office space that would serve as a second corporate campus to support the companys long-term business growth, the company stated. As part of the agreement, the village of

tax credits (Kohls will receive tax credit disbursement based on a maximum $2,750 average job creation tax credit for job per year), and $23.12 million is allocated for capital investment credits (Kohls will receive tax credit disbursement based on the amount of their capital investment). Strengthening Kohls headquarters is good news for Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker said. Not only is this a significant number of jobs, but it also signals that Wisconsins economic climate is improving. In addition, the village of Menomonee Falls will proceed with road improvements and up to $12 million from the incremental

tax revenue that will be generated by the Kohls development, the Kohls release stated. Kohls Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Mansell said the company considered all options, including sites outside of Wisconsin. Our goal has been to find the location that best positions us to remain an employer of choice, retain and attract the best talent and to satisfy our responsibilities to our shareholders and associates, Mansell stated. The Woodland Prime site accomplishes that goal and gives us the room we need to satisfy our business needs for decades to come. Throughout the process, we have found officials at all levels of government, both at the state and local levels, to be strong partners in business development and thank them for their enthusiasm and support. Were very pleased, this is very significant, Menomonee Falls Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald added later. Fitzgerald noted that Kohls is the communitys biggest employer and taxpayer. Its good for the village, its good for the corporation, so were very pleased, Fitzgerald said. Special meetings of the Menomonee Falls Plan Commission and the Menomonee Falls Village Board were scheduled for July 20 to finalize several aspects of the agreement. Items on the Plan Commission agenda included designating lands along Flint Drive as a corporate campus and a recommendation to the Village Board to purchase property along Fond du Lac Avenue. According to the staff report, the 1.9 acres of of land is proposed to be purchased to allow Flint Drive to be extended to Fond du Lac Avenue. Items on the Village Board agenda included a tax incremental district development agreement between Kohls and the village, the corporate center designation and the Flint Drive extension. Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas also noted that Kohls is one of the largest employers in the county and said he is grateful the company has decided to expand in the area.

Burglary Two brothers were arrested for burglary at 5:14 p.m. July 10 after they were observed entering garages in the N7000 block of Hunters Ridge Circle and removing items from them. Carrying a concealed weapon A 22-year-old Menomonee Falls womana passenger in a vehicle at White Birch Drive and Cedar Ridge Lanewas arrested for possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia at 7:29 p.m. July 13. Her boyfriend was cited for carrying a concealed weapon as a four-inch steak knife was found in his possession. Operating while intoxicated A 27-year-old Menomonee Falls man was arrested for operating while intoxicatedfirst offense and on other charges in the N6000 block of Town Line Road after patrons of Whiskey Corners reported an intoxicated man behaving in a disorderly manner in the parking lot of the tavern. The subjectwho was found to have a .380 handgun in his vehiclewas also taken into custody for endangering safety by use of dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct and bail jumping. A male subject was arrested for operating while intoxicated-first offense at 1:53 a.m. July 11 following a traffic stop at Pilgrim Road and Menomonee River Parkway. Town of Lisbons Heritage Weekend set for Aug. 11, 12

The Town of Lisbon will celebrate its history with its Heritage Weekend set for Saturday, Aug. 11 and Sunday, Aug. 12, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. More than 65 re-enactors and more than 25 camps will be on-site representing their historic time period with demonstrations, games and other sights and sounds. The event will feature a live presentation of an American Indian hoop dancer and colonial dancers; a Civil War surgical unit reenacting war-time surgeries; a variety of peri-

od music; Romans/Greeks, Western cowboy, WWII, Marines and Civil War encampments; antique fire engines and cars from varying time periods and a historic baseball on Saturday. Obviously it has to be a person with a great deal of experience. That is why I am voting for Kathy Karalewitz who has 25 years of experience running elections, the majority being in Waukesha County and the Village of Menomonee Falls. I was the Village President of Menomonee Falls for 10 years and was fortunate to have worked with Kathy for five of those years. She oversaw all of the elections and never was there a glitch. She came to us after she had worked in the Waukesha County Clerks office just loaded with experience which is what we need in the Clerks office be it County or Municipal. We need to elect a County Clerk who has experience running elections. There are three candidates in the primary in August and only one candidate has 25 years of experience running elections in this County and that is Kathy Karalewitz. The other two candidates in the primary have a total of three years of election experience combined! Waukesha County residents cannot risk electing another Clerk who does not know election laws. We did that a decade ago and that didnt turn out so good. Kathy Karalewitz is the former Deputy County Clerk under former County Clerk Patricia Madden. Kathy Karalewitz can walk into the Clerks office on Jan. 1, 2013 and begin to fix the problems because she already knows what is wrong. While Kathy and Pat were in the Clerks office, they implemented countywide election equipment and software, and election results were accurate and timely. That needs to happen again and Kathy Karalewitz is the only candidate on the August 14th ballot who has the knowledge and experience to fix the Clerks office beginning on day one. Vote K. Hamilton student selected as Positive Athlete Hamilton High School senior Aaron Beck was selected as a 2011-2012 Wisconsin Positive High School Athlete. Beck was nominated in the Tennis Boys category for his positive attitude, character and leadership; one student was selected state-wide in 23 sports categories. "Aaron has a strong work ethic both on the court and off the court. During matches he remains composed and dignified, even if he is struggling in the match. He is constantly working to improve his game and help the team. He is the definition of a true sportsman," wrote Alan Schneider, Hamilton High School tennis coach. Packers Pro Bowl wide receiver Greg Jennings is the spokesperson for the movement to inspire young athletes that learning to play sports the positive way will help build life skills they will be able to use long after their playing days are over. Beck and Schneider attended the June 15 awards ceremony in the Lambeau Field Atrium. Following an inspirational speech by Jennings, Beck received a signed shirt, plaque and photo with Jennings. Positive Athlete is a group of high-character professional athletes teamed up to promote the benefits of positivity to young athletes around the world. These athletes believe it is crucial to begin shaping the futures of young athletes for life skills beyond athletic competition. Two open houses scheduled for Village Park Master PLan review The Village of Sussex has two open houses scheduled for review of the Village Park Master Plan. The first open house will be held during National Night Out on Wednesday, August 1 from 6:00 8:00 p.m. During National Night Out, the park plans will be set up at a booth located in the parking lot of Village Hall. The second open house will be held during the last Sounds of Sussex concert on Thursday, August 16 from 6 8 p.m. at Weyer Park. At either of these open houses, you may view the plans, ask questions and fill out a comment card. All comments will be compiled and provided to the Park and Recreation Board for its review. The Village Park is the heart of the community and hosts numerous events throughout the year. Village Park also offers diverse active and passive recreational opportunities including disc golf, walking trails, baseball, tennis and picnicking. In 2010, the Village of Sussex engaged in an extensive master planning process for the Village Park which is nearly complete. A master plan will guide the future recreational activities and facilities of the park. The adjustments to the park would take place as projects come forward over the next several decades. Germantown sweeps sectional, advances to state summer baseball tourney

MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Germantown rallied to tie Arrowhead in the Cedarburg sectional final July 16, and then finished the game with clutch hits in an extra inning to earn their second trip to the state summer baseball tournament in three years. "I'm so happy for the kids," Germantown Coach Jeff Wolf said. "This is a great group of people, they're unselfish, they're good people, great teammates. I'm just happy for them because they work hard in the offseason. They deserve it." Wolf said he felt if his team could stay within one or two runs of Arrowhead, his team was solid enough to take advantage of opportunities. Arrowhead got on the board in the first inning and scored again in the fourth inning as Mitchell Dubnicka doubled to drive in a run. Germantown evened the score in the sixth inning as Louis Tuszynski singled. After Mike Krause fouled out, Jimmy Doedens bunted and the throw from the Arrowhead third baseman went wide, allowing Tuszynski to advance to third. A line drive down the third base side by Brian Keller was ruled to be foul, but Keller recouped and hit a single that scored two runs. "He has such great composure, he's a competitor," Wolf said of Keller. "He's the kind of guy who wants to be up in that situation and Im the kind of coach that wants him to be up in that situation." Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning. Arrowhead threatened in the top of the eighth inning, but Germantown got out of the inning as second baseman Zack Kumbier caught a weak fly ball just off of second base and then threw to Blake Fleischman for the force out. Germantown then finished the game in the bottom of the inning as Krause was hit by a pitch. After two outs, Fleischman then dropped a single into right field that allowed Krause to score. Afterward, Fleischman said the pitch was "low and outside" and he was expecting the pitch as he has seen the pitcher's patterns before. Fleischman indicated he at first didn't realize the importance of the hit, as he is "a little deaf" and didn't hear the yelling of the fans. "I didn't hear the cheers, I forgot that I won the game. It was so surreal," he said. Ryan Anderson recorded four strikeouts in eight innings or work, including shutting down Arrowhead over the last four innings. "He did a great job keeping us in that game," Wolf said of Anderson. Germantown opened the Cedarburg sectional with an 8-1 semi-final win over Cedarburg. Twice in the early innings Germantown left the bases loaded without scoring any runs. "Our team has struggled early on in games but we seem to find it. We come through when we need it most," Keller said afterward. Wolf said he told his team "we didn't have to do anything special. They just had to be who they've been all year. They continually come up with big hits." Germantown first got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Taylor Klopatek singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Klopatek then scored on a double by Zack Kumbier. Kumbier advanced to third on a ground out and then scored on a single by Keller. Germantown scored three runs in the sixth inning as Jordan Kuczynski singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a single by Tom Andrus and scored on a single by Zack Kumbier. Kumbier stole second base and Klopatek walked. A single by Mike Krause allowed Kumbier to score. Germantown finished its scoring with three runs in the sixth inning as Kuczynski reached base after being hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a single by Andrus and scored on a double by Kumbier. Klopatek then doubled, allowing Andrus and Kumbier to score. Arrowhead tops Falls in sectional semi-final

Top seed Menomonee Falls lost the first game of the day at the Cedarburg sectional July 16, 7-4. The teams were tied 2-2 after four innings. Arrowhead took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning as Eric Cottrell doubled to score two runners. Menomonee Falls answered in the bottom of the inning as Joel Zyhowski hit a home run with a runner on base to tie the score. Arrowhead took the lead for good in the sixth inning. A bunt by Matt Gaberino scored a runner and a single by Jordan White scored a second runner. A double by Cottrell then allowed Gaberino to score. Menomonee Falls avoided another run when White was

tagged out at home. Gaberino then finished the game for Arrowhead, getting all three Menomonee Falls batters in the seventh inning to ground out. Arrowhead had 13 hits to five for Menomonee Falls. "They had runners all over the place. It puts pressure on the defense and every mistake is magnified when there's that much pressure on the defense," Menomonee Falls Coach Pat Hansen said.
